Abstract
The objectives of this study were (1) To determine the effect of discomfort in the
virtual community will reduce the perceived benefits (perceived of usefulness) to knowledge
sharing intention, and (2) to determine the effect of insecurity in the virtual community will
reduce the perceived benefits ( perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention.
Participants in this study is the general public who use the virtual community and social
media. Data collected by primarily by distributing a questionnaire online and can be
accessed from the crowd. Primary data generated as much as 83 questionnaires were
processed using the Partial Least Square. The results of this study are
Keywords: Discomfort, Insecurity, of Perceived Usefulness, and Knowledge Sharing
Intention.

Background
The Internet is one of the technologies that connect people as users with information
around and outside the reach of users. The growth of technology makes Internet users can
not escape from the applications that provide a lot of information or simply as entertainment
only. Not only that, the growth of the Internet allows users to interact with others directly
despite not being in the same place with the use of videocall.
One part of the growth of the Internet itself is no social media where people can share
a lot of things through this site. Social media plays an important role in the dissemination of
information to the general public. Since it was founded, social media is intended as a forum
for users to easily participate, share and exchange information and ideas on virtual
communities and networking. Social media in this regard include blogs, social networks,
forums and visual world. Production information and news today is no longer exclusively
carried by major news publishers. Currently, anyone can become news makers and give
effect to the people. Likewise with the consumption of information that can be freely
enjoyed by anyone through digital media.
internet technology connect Internet users with information. Internetssa social media
(Baym et al, 2004 ;. Walther and Parks, 2002) is used to communicate with friends, relatives,
co-workers, even forming new relationship (Madden and Lenhart, 2006). Virtual community
itself is the container for building information and share information and knowledge to all
users through the process of communication and interaction that occurs directly or indirectly.

1
Researchers interested in studying this because in this technological era did little community
of Internet users feel secure in using social media as well as members of the virtual
community. Things like security and user convenience is of paramount affect how much
benefit they get the information shared in the online media as well as to conduct business
transactions or other transactions.

Formulation of the problem

1. How influential discomfort in the virtual community will reduce the perceived
benefits (perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention?
2. How influential insecurity in the virtual community will reduce the perceived
benefits (perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention?

Research purposes
1. To determine the effect of discomfort in the virtual community will reduce the
perceived benefits (perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention.
2. To determine the effect of insecurity in virtual communities can reduce the perceived
benefits (perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention.

Literature review
Discomfort
Discomfort felt someone having a problem using a new technology that is still
foreign to him. This makes social media users feel uncomfortable when they feel failed in
controlling the new technologies (Parasuraman, 2000). Discomfort can happen to all
participants of the virtual community for users sometimes think that such advanced
technology is not created for people who are mediocre. But rather many users also feel that
it is not a discomfort but a challenge in order to control the technology.

insecurity
insecurity appears when someone finds distrust towards something and think it will
endanger themselves as well as business activities. In using social media and incorporated in
virtual communities, sometimes users will feel insecure when they have to share your
personal data and share information. That is because at present many other user-users who
intend bad / irresponsible can harm others without thinking long. It makes the user feel free
to share information and conduct business online. But not everyone thinks like that. From
this study, researchers wanted to know the level of security they feel when interacting with
others or do business using the virtual community and social media.

2
Perceived of Usefulness
Moore and Benbasat (1991) explains that perceived of usefulness is the degree to
which a person believes that a particular system can improve its performance. In this study,
researchers wanted to measure the level of profits / benefits received by users of virtual
communities for using the media to interact with others.

Knowledge Sharing Intention

According Wasko and Faraj (2000), knowledge sharing motivates the use of virtual
communities. The exchange of knowledge is important to improve the learning performance.
Sharing knowledge is the behavior of the transport or delivery, where the benefit of the
knowledge of others). Meanwhile, Lee (2001) says that sharing knowledge is an activity in
which an individual, group, or organization that provides or disseminate knowledge to others
or people. Wijnhoven (1998) states that knowledge is a process of knowledge transfer
through the medium of information and knowledge receiver integrates the knowledge they
receive into new knowledge.
Then the hypothesis provided in this study to be tested are:
H1: Effect of discomfort in virtual communities can reduce the perceived benefits
(perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention.
H2: Effect of insecurity in the virtual community will reduce the perceived benefits
(perceived of usefulness) to knowledge sharing intention.
Based on the hypothesis can be made conceptual research framework as described in the
chart below:

Research Methodology
This study used data to obtain primary data. As an instrument of research, this study
used a questionnaire. Questionnaires distributed online media (use google home page
document) to collect data. Respondents voluntarily fill out a questionnaire prepared by the

researchers systematically. By using this method becomes more efficient for researchers to
collect data needed to achieve the research objectives that have been formulated.
Population and Sample
In this study, using the virtual community and social media users as the population.
While the sample was chosen through snowball sampling method, where the method has a
drawback sampling to control and control of the respondents, but the reason researchers use
this method for reasons of time and cost efficiency in doing collect data. Data was collected
by using a web-based questionnaire to facilitate the researchers to collect data. There are no
specific criteria for the respondents in this study so that filling the questionnaire is voluntary.

Operational Definition and Measurement of Variables

Measurement of each construct used in this study were adopted from previous
studies. Measurement of each construct using a Likert scale of 1 to 5, where each
figure is explained that (1) strongly disagree, (2) do not agree, (3) Ragu-Ragu, (4)
agree, and (5) strongly agree. As for the types of variables, constructs, source, and

Data analysis techniques used in this research is quantitative. The data collection
itself is done by distributing questionnaires openly / online users with a virtual community
without any special characteristics related to the respondents.

Data Processing
In this study using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) as analysis of data in the
application program of research using PLS (Partial Least Square) version 6.0.1. SEM was
used to test the goodness of fit of the research model. Where is the goodness of fit is used to
measure the suitability of the observations or the actual input (covariance or correlation
matrix) compared with predictions posed by models. PLS was first developed in the 1960s
by Herman Wold OA in the field of econometrics. PLS is a predictive technique that can
handle many independent variables, even though there will be multicollinearity between
these variables (Ramzan and Khan, 2010), PLS is a good alternative to the multiple
regression analysis and principal component regression for PLS method is more robust,
meaning that the model parameters did not change much when the new samples taken from
the total population (Rehearsal and Kowalski, 1986).

Results and Discussion:

In this study, using the virtual community and social media users as the population.
While the sample was chosen through snowball sampling method, where the method has a
drawback sampling to control and control of the respondents, but the reason researchers use
this method for reasons of time and cost efficiency in doing collect data. Data was collected
by using a web-based questionnaire to facilitate the researchers to collect data. There are no
specific criteria for the respondents in this study so that filling the questionnaire is voluntary.
