OBJECTIVES, ORIGINALITY AND INNOVATIVE NATURE OF THE PROJECT

OBJECTIVES
The broad objectives are to design an Incineration facility for the MSW of the city Buenos Aires,
Argentina in detail and to propose the pre-treatment techniques to make the incineration scheme
feasible technically and economically.
The following are the specific objectives
1. Collection of data on the MSW generation
2. Characteristics of the MSW generated
3. Computation of the thermal properties of the MSW
4. Detail design of an Incineration facility
5. Evaluation of various modes of separation techniques to make the incineration more
efficient and economical.
6. Economic feasibility studies
7. Environmental impact assessment
SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL BARRIER
We anticipate that waste segregation (segregation at source) will be a very important hurdle for
this project, that if we successfully addressed, will go a long way in the realization of this project.
Another barrier will be to design a robust system, cheaply and environmentally friendly tailored
for this specific region.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
1. The study is limited to the city of Buenos Aires only
2. The study is tailored to Incineration (disposal and energy recovery)
3. Little or no emphasis on waste reuse, reduce and recycling
INNOVATION
The most important innovative measure in this study is to design a robust, flexible and integrated
system. The key to that we believe, will be coming up with a seamless and effective source of
waste segregation (at the household level) tool.
