KCACTF Showcase

KCACTF Showcase

When I went to the Thursday showing of the KCACTF Showcase, I thought I would be

sitting on one acts, long scenes, and heavy content. I was still excited to watch as I miss doing

these sort of showcases. I was surprised that the performances in total only lasted a little over an

hour. The pacing as a whole was meticulous and there was not really a drop in energy level

throughout the entire thing. In all honesty, it made me want to watch more, or that there was

more performances because of how impressive the pacing and quality in acting from every group

brought to the audience.

In particular, I really enjoyed the contents of the Zane Boyer with Nick Micheels and

Melissa Brausch with Joshua Johnson groups. Both groups seemed to have great chemistry with

each other in both the physical and emotional sense of their scenes. They did not have any sort of

awkward pauses or miscommunications on stage, and the subtle nuances that they had in their

interactions made the scene more relatable and entertaining to watch. For the first group, I liked

how their song, “What the Fuck Was That?” really had me laughing because of their flow and

transitions between speaking and singing. I thought that the only problem that really got me was

that when they had overlapping lyrics, I could not really understand what they were saying and

would then start to feel like it was close to being a shouting match. I really enjoyed their

dynamics and blocking that made it seemed like they were hiding. As for the second group, I felt

that their interactions with each other really brought me in the scene. It was like their mood in
their scenes really tied the scenes without having to do a lot of prop setting or even movement.

With this group, it seemed like every action and direction had a purpose and this kept my focus

on them instead of trying to figure out what they were doing. I think the only thing was that

when Melissa was waving the cigarette around, I thought if might have been really wild

compared to the other movements that they did within their blocking. If it was a real cigarette, I

would have thought she’d burn herself with the flying ash. I also liked their second scene in that

Joshua, while not having a lot of lines compared to Melissa, made the audience know how

important his character was through actions and his expressions. Their reactions toward each

other was also really relatable to where I would laugh at their banters. I also felt like they used

their silences or pauses really effectively because it paced the scene nicely. Otherwise, the scene

would have been easily frantic with the fast chattering lines of the female role.

I felt that all the actors did a really impressive job for the timed circumstances that they

had. Their transitions from scene to scene and to monologues had no lag and whenever an actor

was not in the other’s monologues, it was if they disappeared despite still being on stage. I felt

that doing that would actually be hard, especially if there was a longer monologue that they

would have to stay motionless for. I really thought that for the most part, the groups stayed open

to the audience through their scenes, with the exception of moving from point to point. I would

imagine having to stuff all the lines and nuances within the scenes within that 5-6 minute time

would need a lot of practice between the actors in order to interact realistically with a pace they

can feel comfortable with

Overall, I would definitely recommend this showcase to anyone I meet because of how

concise and packed the performances were. It will make the time watching fly by instead of

dragging by the second.
