Safety Recommendations
The following safety recommendations must be considered to avoid injuries to persons and/or damage to the
equipment:
1. Installation and Service Personnel: Installation and service must be carried out by authorized personnel who
have the technical training and experience necessary to be aware of any hazardous operations during install-
ation and service, and of measures to avoid any danger to themselves, to any other personnel, and to the equip-
ment.
2. Access to the Equipment: Access to the equipment in use must be restricted to service personnel only.
3. Safety Norms: Recommended safety norms are detailed in the Health and Safety sections of this guide.
Local safety regulations must be used if mandatory. Safety instructions in this guide should be used in addi-
tion to the local safety regulations. In the case of conflict between safety instructions stated in this guide and
those indicated in local regulations, mandatory local norms will prevail. Should local regulations not be man-
datory, then the safety norms in this guide will prevail.
4. Service Personnel Skill: Service personnel must have received adequate technical training on tele-
communications and in particular on the equipment this guide refers to.

EOAM CONFIGURATION FOR CTR 8300 AND 8500
The CTR 8540, CTR 8312, or CTR 8311 with an ODU 600, ODU 600sp, or ODU 300hp radio is classified under the
R&TTE Directive 99/5/EC as a class 2.8 radio (microwave fixed link) product.
Point-to-point radio relay equipment is intended to be used for:
- Interconnecting private and public networks.
- Interconnecting mobile base stations back to the PSTN point of presence (POP).
For details of where the equipment is intended to be used, see the country matrix below.
- AVIAT NETWORKS intends to market this equipment where a cross (X) is shown in the table below.
- The information contained in this table has been gathered from the relevant government authorities and
relates only to European countries participating in the R&TTE directive.

EOAM CONFIGURATION FOR CTR 8300 AND 8500
Discovery
Discovery is the first phase of EOAM and it identifies the devices in the network and their OAM-
capabilities. Discovery uses information OAMPDUs. During the discovery phase, the following
information is advertised within the periodic information OAMPDUs:
l OAM mode - Conveyed to the remote OAM entity. The mode can be either active or
passive and can be used to determine device functionality.
l OAM configuration (capabilities) - Advertises the capabilities of the local OAM entity.
With this information a peer can determine, what functions are supported and
accessible; for example, loopback capability.
l OAMPDU configuration - Includes the maximum OAMPDU size for receipt and
delivery. This information along with the rate limiting of 10 frames per second can be
used to limit the bandwidth allocated to OAM traffic.
l Platform identity - A combination of an organization unique identifier (OUI) and 32-
bits of vendor-specific information. OUI allocation, controlled by the IEEE, is
typically the first three bytes of a MAC address.
Link Monitoring
Link monitoring in EOAM detects and indicates link faults under a variety of conditions.
LinkMonitoring uses an event notification OAMPDU, and sends the events to the remote OAM
entity, when there are problems detected on the link. The error events include the following:
l Error Symbol Period
l Error Frame
Remote Loopback
An OAM entity can put its remote peer into remote loopback mode by using the Loopback Con-
trol OAMPDU. Remote loopback mode helps an administrator ensure the quality of links during
installation or during troubleshooting. In remote loopback mode, every frame received is trans-
mitted back on the same port except for OAMPDUs and PAUSE frames. The periodic exchange
of OAMPDUs must continue during the OAM remote loopback state to maintain the OAM ses-
sion. The remote loopback command is acknowledged by responding with an information
OAMPDU with updated state information.

Configuration Guidelines
The guidelines for the configuration of EOAM are:
l EOAM must be globally enabled prior to enabling it on the specified ports.
l It is possible to configure EOAM parameters on a port, that is not enabled,
but the configuration has no effect.
l EOAM must be enabled, only on the physical interface and not on the port-
channel or VLAN interfaces.
