Protocol Description
IS-IS (Intermediate System–to-Intermediate System) protocol is an Interior Gateway Protocol
that uses link-state information to make routing decisions.
ISIS is an integrated routing protocol, which can be used as an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP)
to support TCP/IP Networks. ISIS is a hierarchical routing protocol with two levels of hierarchy,
namely Level 1 (L1) and Level 2 (L2). A large domain may be administratively divided into areas.
Each system resides in exactly one area. Routing within an area is referred to as Level 1 routing.
Routing between areas is referred to as Level 2 routing.
The Level 2 Intermediate systems keep track of the paths to destination areas.
The Level 1 Intermediate system keeps track of the routing within their area. An intermediate sys-
tem can act as both Level 1 and Level 2 and is referred to as the L12 system.
For an NPDU destined to another area, an L1 Intermediate system sends the NPDU to the
nearest L2 IS in its own area, regardless of what the destination area is. Then the NPDU travels
via level 2 routing to the destination area, where it again travels via level 1 routing to the des-
tination End system.

Configuring area-password
Configuring the area password will prevent unauthorized routers from injecting false routing
information into the link-state database.
Execute the following commands to configure the area-password.
Enter the Global Configuration mode.
aos# configure terminal
Enable ISIS globally in the Switch AOS1.
aos(config)# router isis
Configure the area-password.
aos(config-router)# area-password aos123
Exit from the Router Configuration mode.
aos(config-router)# exit
To configure the ISIS area authentication password, use the area-password command in router
configuration mode. To disable the password, use the no form of this command.
aos# configure terminal
aos(config)# router isis
aos(config-router)# no area-password aos123
Configuring domain-password
To configure the IS-IS routing domain authentication password, use the domain-password com-
mand in router configuration mode.
Execute the following commands to configure the domain-password
Enter the Global Configuration mode.
aos# configure terminal
Enable ISIS globally in the Switch AOS1.
aos(config)# router isis
Configure the domain-password.
aos(config-router)# domain-password aos
Exit from the Router Configuration mode.
aos(config-router)# exit
To disable the password, use the no form of this command.
aos# configure terminal
aos(config)# router isis
aos(config-router)# no domain-password aos
Configuring distance
To configure the distance, use the distance command in router configuration mode.
Execute the following commands to configure the distance
Enter the Global Configuration mode.
aos# configure terminal
Enable ISIS globally in the Switch AOS1.
aos(config)# router isis
Configure the distance.
aos(config-router)# distance 5
Exit from the Router Configuration mode.
aos(config-router)# exit
To disable the password, use the no form of this command.
aos# configure terminal
aos(config)# router isis
aos(config-router)# no distance
Configuring is-type
To configure the routing level for an instance of the ISIS routing process, use the is-type com-
mand in router configuration mode.
To configure the is-type, use the is-type command in router configuration mode.
Execute the following commands to configure the is-type:
Enter the Global Configuration mode.
aos# configure terminal
Enable ISIS globally in the Switch AOS1.
aos(config)# router isis
Configure the is-type as level-1.
aos(config-router)# is-type level-1
Exit from the Router Configuration mode.
aos(config-router)# exit
IS-type could be Level-1 or Level-2-only or Level1-2. Default system type is Level1-2.
l Level-1 – Router performs only level-1 routing. The router configured as level-1 learns
only about destinations inside its area. Level-2 routing is performed by the closest
Level 1-2 router.
l Level-1-2 – Router performs both level-1 and level-2 routing. This router runs two
instances of the routing process.
XV AVIAT NETWORKS
LA CONFIGURATION CTR 8300 AND 8500
l Level-2-only – Routing process acts as a Level-2 router only. This router is part of the
backbone, and does not communicate with Level-1- only routers in its own area.
Restore the default value of IS system type by executing the following command.
aos(config-router)# no is-type
no is-type configures the system type for an instance as Level1-2 ISIS router.
Configuring net
To configure an ISIS network entity title (NET) for a Connectionless Network Service routing pro-
cess, use the net command in router configuration mode.
To configure the net, use the net command in router configuration mode.

aos(config-router)# exit
To disable route-leak feature, use the no form of this command
aos(config-router)# no route-leak
Configuring set-overload-bit
To configure the router to signal other routers not to use it as an intermediate hop in their
Shortest Path First (SPF) calculations, use the set-overload-bit command in router
configuration mode.
Execute the following commands to set the overload bit
Enter the Global Configuration mode.
aos# configure terminal
