Knowledge: - Students will be able to summarize the important ideas of major psychological theories - Students will be able to explain how these important ideas can be used to understand human behaviour - Students will be able to know the significant contributions of influential psychologists - Students will be able to explain the significance of contributions of influential psychologists Rationale (Description/need/purpose) The purpose of this lesson is for students to build a foundation of understanding of the various fields of psychology and the key contributors to each subfield. Students need to know the history of psychology before they are able to expand on their knowledge of psychology to explain human mental processes and behaviour, and socialization. Assessment (How will you know that the students have achieved the learning expectation? What assessment tool will you use?) - Assessment for learning o Exit Card – Students do a KWL (What I know, What I want to know, What I learned), I will begin next lesson answering groups of questions from the last class Accommodations (How will you meet the needs of your students? What management strategies will you use?) Duration Activity/Task Introduction (How will you engage and motivate the students?) - Introduce the topic by providing the broad definition of psychology 15 Minutes - Watch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7ekwJzQEKc) that details 26 interesting facts about personality and human behaviour based on psychological findings to get students intrigued about learning psychology (example – the happier we are, the less sleep we require) o After – ask students what they thought, were they interested by any of the facts? Did any fact surprise them? - Explain to students what the learning goals of the lesson are and the purpose of the lesson (to build a foundation of knowledge about psychology) Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.) Teaching - Hand out worksheet to students - Explain to students that they are to write down the main points of the lesson onto the worksheet to keep in their binders - Provide definition of Psychodynamic theory and discuss the contributions of Freud, Erikson, and Jung to this study (Id, Ego, Superego, stages of human development etc.) o Watch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYCBdZLCDBQ) - describes Erikson’s 8 stages of development - Provide definition of Behavioural Psychology and discuss the contributions of Pavlov, 55 Minutes Watson and Skinner to this study (Pavlov’s dogs, operant conditioning etc.) o Watch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy_mIEnnlF4) - Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon uses operant conditioning on Penny to demonstrate how it influences behaviour - Provide definition of Cognitive Psychology and discuss Piaget’s contributions to this study (stages of cognitive development) - Provide definition of Developmental Psychology and discuss the contributions of Ainsworth, and Vygotsky (attachment styles, zone of proximal development etc.) - Provide definition of Humanistic Psychology and discuss Maslow’s contributions to this study (hierarchy of needs) o Watch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-4ithG_07Q) - describes each stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in cartoon form - Students will then get into partners to work on the last column of the worksheet – how do these important ideas/theories help explain human behaviour? o Students will be given 10-15 minutes to work on this Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?) 10 Minutes - After 10-15 minutes, the last column will be taken up as a class so that each column is filled in correctly and students will be allotted time to ask questions about the lesson - Hand out Exit Cards for students to complete a KWL – What I know, What I Want to Know, What I Learned
