Title of the Mini-Lesson: Living and Non-Living Organisms

TEKS Addressed (9) Organisms and environments. The student knows that the living
environment is composed of relationships between organisms and the life cycles that occur. The
student is expected to:
(A) sort and classify living and nonliving things based upon whether or not they have basic
needs and produce offspring;
CCRS Addressed:
E. Classification and Taxonomy
1. Know ways in which living things can be classified based on each organism’s internal
and external structure, development and relatedness of DNA sequence.
ELPS Addressed:
(c) Cross-curricular second language acquisition essential knowledge and skills.
(1)(A) use prior knowledge and experiences to understand meanings in English;
(1)(E) internalize new basic and academic language by using and reusing it in meaningful ways
in speaking and writing activities that build concept and language attainment;
(2) (I) demonstrate listening comprehension of increasingly complex spoken English by
following directions, retelling or summarizing spoken messages, responding to questions and
requests, collaborating with peers, and taking notes commensurate with content and grade-level
needs.
(3) (E) share information in cooperative learning interactions;

Living/Non-Living Organisms
Matching worksheet
Mini-Lesson: (20 Minutes)
Focus: 2 Minutes- A class discussion will take place while creating an anchor chart/ Venn
diagram on what students classify as living and non-living things. This activity will allow the
students to reflect on their prior knowledge while the teacher uses the information they give to
make any modifications necessary to the mini-lesson.

Instructional Delivery: 5 Minutes- Students will watch a YouTube video titled Living Things
and Nonliving Things | Living | Nonliving | Kid's Science | 1st Grade Learning. After the video,
students will write down things that they see in everyday life that are living and non-living
organisms and a class discussion will be held pertaining to the organisms they chose to write
about.

Guided Practice: 5 Minutes- Objects will be brought into the classroom that are living and non-
living and students will walk around the room, observing and classifying whether the objects are
living or non-living. Their observations will be written on a piece of paper.

Independent Practice: 5 Minutes- Students will complete a matching worksheet classifying

living and non-living organisms (Attached below).

Closure: 2 Minutes- Students will add to the Venn diagram their own examples of living and
non-living organisms for future reference in later lessons. Each student will be encouraged to
participate and add their examples individually.

Extension/Intervention: Students that need extension will be asked to explain their decisions on
classifying organisms as living or non-living. Concerning intervention, students will receive one-
on-one assistance with the instructor when needed to further explain the concepts.

Zip Kit: Living and Non-Living Organisms sorting activity.
