Objectives

Learn about the following concepts: songwriting, improvising, playing by ear. Students
will experience guided practice in understanding these concepts through informal instruction and
personal performance.

Create: Students will build a three (+) part circle song without the aid of sheet music.
Assess: Students will discuss the building blocks of constructing a multi-part song.

Objectives

Students will create a circle song in multiple parts. They will compose their parts
themselves, in small groups, instead of playing parts written by the teacher. Some students will
be selected to write parts to be performed individually; their musical decisions will be teacher-
guided.

Students will demonstrate their ability to:

Perform: Students will perform parts in small groups, as individuals, and as a band.
Create: Students will compose their own parts in small groups and as individuals.
Assess: A teacher-guided discussion will lead students in analyzing their compositions.
Assessments:

Informal listening and teacher-guided discussion.

Objectives

Students will compose a one measure melody of their own. Students will transcribe their
melody into notation and perform both as a large group, in small groups, and sometimes
individually. Students will reflect on their knowledge of composition and the building blocks of
improvisation after having completed the three lessons.

Students will demonstrate their ability to:

Perform: Students will perform an individualized melody for their peers.


Create: Students will compose their own melody and transcribe it onto staff paper.
Assess: Students will practice transcription and reflect on a worksheet about their
learning experience.

Assessments:

Teacher-guided discussions, in-class performance, and reflection worksheet.

Materials:

Band instruments, worksheet (provided), writing utensil.
