Extended essay - Reflections on planning and progress form

Candidate: This form is to be completed by the candidate during the course and completion of their EE. This document records
reflections on your planning and progress, and the nature of your discussions with your supervisor. You must undertake three
formal reflection sessions with your supervisor: The first formal reflection session should focus on your initial ideas and how you
plan to undertake your research; the interim reflection session is once a significant amount of your research has been completed,
and the final session will be in the form of a viva voce once you have completed and handed in your EE. This document acts as
a record in supporting the authenticity of your work. The three reflections combined must amount to no more than 500 words.

The completion of this form is a mandatory requirement of the EE for first assessment May 2018. It must be submitted
together with the completed EE for assessment under Criterion E.

Supervisor: You must have three reflection sessions with each candidate, one early on in the process, an interim meeting and
then the final viva voce. Other check-in sessions are permitted but do not need to be recorded on this sheet. After each reflection
session candidates must record their reflections and as the supervisor you must sign and date this form.

First reflection session

Candidate comments:

Today was the deadline for the submission of the proposal for my EE. Something I would definitely not want to repeat again
next time is leave the meeting with my supervisor in the last day. This happened because I was very indecisive of what
subject I wanted to do the EE on. After considering I chose to do it on Physics, on a topic I find amusing which is fluids and
kinematics. What I am going to do is build a water rocket, which I have always found fascinating, and discuss the physical
principals involved. I sent my proposal to Mr. Weber, my supervisor, and discussed the idea. My question in the beginning
was very narrow which is not acceptable, so after I consulted that with Mr. Weber he helped me formulate a better one.
However, it is not settled yet, therefore we will still work on improving it. We also discussed of how I can conduct the
experiment and possible variables I might want to explore on the topic.

Interim reflection
Candidate comments:

After my first reflection there were no change in the topic I chose to do my Extended Essay on (Physics, Kinematics, Fluids),
however I improved my research question in order for it to be more open for discussion and analysing. I also introduced to
my experiment a new variable which was not part of my previous question. Fortunately for me I have already covered the
B.4 Topic on my Physics Book that is concerned on Fluids so I have basic knowledge and understanding on what the
physics involved in my experiment will be. I don’t particularly have experience in building a water rocket, however having
spent a fair amount of time in reading documents and guides on how to construct one I already have set the location also
already have assembled most of the materials I am going to need for it. I have also read material related to the formulas of
fluids that will apply to my research question and I this is all projected and explained in my detailed outline.

Final reflection - Viva voce

Candidate comments:

I really got to do an exciting experiment and dug deeper into the field in which I was doing my research. Since I plan to study
Physics at a later stage I know that this experience will be a great first step towards plenty more similar works when I will
have to apply Physics principles to build models and experiments. A difficulty I had was the derivation of formulas as at the
time I had not studied Derivatives chapter. Also, I made quite a few mistakes when constructing the rocket and the launcher,
which led to a few failed trials. However, mistakes are always part of such projects, and I think this one helped me learn from
them. After being finished with the experiment, I found out that another interesting variable that could have been considered
during the experiment would be height. After completing my Extended Essay, I can say that the experience overall was very
rewarding.

Supervisor comments:
The candidate showed a great deal of initiative and engagement. The candidate was able to apply concepts learned during
the two years in IBDP Physics, while maintaining a keen attention to detail.

The background information provided helped give the essay an all-round robust structure.

The candidate is clearly able to identify contexts in which certain mathematical methods are requisite, and apply them
fluently. This is evidenced by the fact that the candidate was able to manipulate the data to draw several salient conclusions,
as well as discuss the differences between the theoretical and applied, as well as account for these differences.

The candidate included diagrams when relevant (including self-made images) and was able to correctly explain and derive
mathematical results relevant to the paper. Mathematical and physical concepts pertinent to the discussion at hand were
discussed and their relation to the topic were clearly outlined.

The candidate showed tremendous interest in the subject area. Throughout the text a sense of curiosity was apparent.
