Creating ODBC Users &

Connections

Section 1

Creating ODBC Users.

ODBC Users in DockMaster differ from Clerks, and DSN Connections (Data
Source Names). The purpose of having a unique ODBC User defined for each
ODBC Connection is to allow System Administrators and support staff the ability
to determine what workstation is logged in. Therefore it is very important to
always have a unique ODBC User for each workstation that connected to your
network.

IMPORTANT KEY POINTS

• Create an ODBC User for each workstation. If using Citrix/Terminal Services

then create an ODBC User for each Client desktop. It should be workstation
name specific.

• DSN’s are created on each Workstation and may have the same name i.e.
DockMaster, Train, etc. They contain the connection information that allows
ODBC users to connect to a specific Account. There maybe be more than
one connection created on each Workstation if the Clerk is allowed to
connect to more than one account.

• Multiple clerks may log in to DockMaster from the same workstation there is
no need to create Clerk Specific ODBC Users if more than one Clerk uses
the same workstation. i.e. The Point Of Sale register would be one
workstation with many Clerks.

• A list of all ODBC user names and their assigned workstation names should
be kept. The list should be maintained as new Users and Machines are
added.

• A cheat sheet has been included on the next page for assisting in recording
your account and ODBC name information.

TIP! After you have setup the Server and one workstation with the
DockMaster Installation Technician. Create the ODBC user names for the
rest of the machines before setting up their connections.

Setup
1. Create the ODBC Users first, Go to DockMaster…System
Administration…Security…click on System User Maintenance. In the User
ID field type in the ODBC User name, then enter the User Name, be
descriptive. Leave the User Password and Account/Database Name fields
blank. Note these two fields are only used when restricting connections to
a specific account. Discuss with your assigned DockMaster Trainer if you
feel you need to use these fields. See Sample Image below.

2. Repeat the above step for each workstation that will be connecting to
DockMaster making sure to create a unique User Id for each one. Here’s a
sample list of what they should look like when done.

3. Once all ODBC Users have been created you may now begin installing
the Client software on each workstation, during the software installation
you will be prompted to create a new Data Source Name. When the
Create New Data Source window appears Select D3 ODBC Driver from
the list.
