Chromebook Training Grant Proposal

FRIT 7232

By: Jessica Cliett, Spencer Landis, Miranda Thigpen

Abstract
Oak Grove High School recently received a large number of Chromebooks for student
use in classrooms. The Chromebooks were assigned to teachers in every classroom as a way for
students to better interact with their peers and engage in their learning. Chromebooks have the
ability to create a transformative environment for 21st century learners and provide teachers
numerous instructional strategies that go beyond traditional whole group or individual
instruction. Additionally, students that are English language-learners, on IEPs, have learning
disabilities, or are falling behind their peers would benefit from Chromebook access in their
classrooms.
The goal of this professional development day is to provide teachers with basic
operational and troubleshooting knowledge of Chromebooks, inform teachers how to design and
implement enrichment and remediation activities using Chromebooks, and teach teachers how to
create and assign various student assessments using Chromebooks. During professional
development, teachers will participate in several activities; ability level grouped discussions, a
KWL, and redesign a Unit with other teachers using technology. After the professional
development, teachers should have more confidence with using Chromebooks in the classroom
to design assessments, enrichment and remediation activities, and troubleshoot problems.

Needs Assessment

Oak Grove High School conducted a survey that examined teacher use of Chromebooks
in their classrooms, challenges faced with use, and potential Chromebook uses they would like to
learn more about. 74 teachers from Oak Grove High School responded to the survey regarding
Chromebook use in their classrooms. The survey data revealed that the most common use for
chromebooks in the classroom is to access teacher course pages while students accessing course
content and creating presentations were the next most common uses of the chromebooks.
Teachers responded that limited uses and frequent troubleshooting being required were the
greatest challenges they experienced with Chromebook classroom use. In addition to the survey
data, the most common teacher submitted technology service request regarding Chromebooks
from August 2016 to December 2016 was students being unable to access their personal account.
Without this access, Chromebooks are unable to be used by students. Finally, survey data
revealed that teachers would like to know more about using Chromebooks to administer
assessments to students in order to have immediate knowledge of where students are in their
level of content mastery. The data revealed that professional development is needed in specific
areas such as troubleshooting, available instructional strategies, and assessments in order to
increase the effectiveness of Chromebook use in classrooms. Miscellaneous troubleshooting and
account issues such as resetting a student’s password and creating student accounts, are required
to be addressed during class time. As a result, the amount of instructional time teachers have
with students is limited. The data also indicates that teachers could become discouraged from
utilizing Chromebooks in their lesson planning due to lack of knowledge of educational uses
made possible with Chromebooks (Appendix A).

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: By June 2017, teachers will obtain basic operational and troubleshooting knowledge
of Chromebook use so that they can quickly resolve common Chromebook issues
maximizing classroom time.
Objective 1: Teachers will demonstrate basic operational and troubleshooting knowledge of
Chromebook use in the classroom.

Goal 2:By August 2017, teachers will be able to design and implement enrichment and
remediation activities using at least 10 different web applications accessible on Chromebooks
so that teachers have a variety of instructional strategies to use in lesson planning with
Chromebooks.
Objective 2: Teachers will design and include enrichment and remediation activities using at
least 10 different web applications.

Goal 3:By December 2017, teachers will be able to create and assign various student
assessments using programs accessible on Chromebooks so that teachers have immediate
knowledge of student progress levels.
Objective 3: Teachers will create and assign student assessments using programs accessible
on Chromebooks.

Evaluation Plan

The evaluation of this program will be evaluated by the project staff. The teachers will be
given a survey before and after participating in the professional development course for using
Chromebooks in the classroom. The teachers responses on the survey will be presented to the
committee leaders to both provide proof of achieved learning and growth from the professional
development course and to identify any problems or concerns. The teacher survey is available in
Appendix B in this plan.

Budget
Aligning student learning with technology and engaging our students is key to enhancing
the quality of learning in the classroom. In order to utilize the Chromebooks effectively, teachers
must be fully aware and understand the applications, software, and troubleshooting when using
Chromebooks in the classroom. In order for students to perform at high levels with the
Chromebooks in the classroom, teachers must also know how to properly give instruction and
engage their students with this new technology. Therefore, a Professional Development day has
been assigned to the teachers, administrators, and certified employees of Oak Grove High School
in order to enhance skills needed for incorporating Chromebooks effectively in the classroom. In
the table below, we have estimated the total cost of the professional development for using
Chromebooks in the classroom.
