- Have a class discussion centered around the question – “What do Disney movies say
15 MIN to you?”
- Explain that many critics say that Disney movies have sexist and racist undertones,
and stereotypes
Lesson Steps (Describe the sequence of the lesson.)
- Discuss feminist issues surrounding Disney films
o Princess Type 1 – Cinderella, Snow White, and Aurora
o Princess Type 2 – Ariel, Belle and Jasmine
o Princess Type 3 – Pocahontas and Mulan
- Discuss masculinity stereotypes
o Sexism
3 DAYS o Strength and power
o Dominance connected to violence
- Discuss racism portrayed in Disney films
o Negative portrayal of Indigenous Peoples/ First Nations – Peter Pan and
Pocahontas
o Negative portrayal of the Middle East – Aladdin
o Negative portrayal of African Americans – Jasmine, The Princess and the Frog,
and Jungle Book
- Each section will be described fully with examples from songs, pictures, or lines from
the movies
- Watch the movie “The Little Mermaid”
- While watching the movie, students will write down stereotypes they see and keep in
mind three questions: Why does Disney use the ideas/stereotypes in their movies?
Should these messages be allowed? Do these messages affect children and in what
way?
Conclusion (How will you wrap-up the lesson?)
- After the movie will discuss as a class the three questions proposed at the beginning of
the film
1 DAY - Give students an assignment
o Will write an in-class essay about the stereotypes used in The Little Mermaid
the next day
o The rest of class will be used for them to prepare for the in-class essay –
introduction, 2/3 body paragraphs and conclusion
o Can bring in any material they want (i.e. articles, lyrics, script etc.) to provide
sufficient evidence of their arguments
o Explain that they will not be marked on grammar or spelling
o Marked on explanation and evidence of stereotypes
