ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT
This venture was taken up by Anzo Clara Aya ,a resident of Moyo town in Cecile West village
of Moyo District.
Clara visited a pig farm in Gulu where the farmers reared 100 pigs on a tiny piece of land. She
went ahead and purchased 7 pregnant sows from pig farmers in the neighbouring Adjumani
District at Ug shillings 200,00 each
She was amazed by how much farmers in Gulu earned from the venture. The profits were self-
explanatory once she realized how profitable it was.
High demand for pork from five great butchers in Moyo own. This drove her into starting up the
venture so as to increase on the supply of animals for slaughter.
Love for animals was a major drive. Clara had a great love for livestock and therefore was
assured that she would take good care of her pig farm.
Source of Finance
Clara reared chicken and hence had some capital to set up a pig unit.
Challenges
Theft around the area .Pigs have a high market in the area hence prompt people to steal them and
sell them to the butchers.
Diseases are also a big challenge as pigs’ lives are claimed. The greatest predicament is
pneumonia and flue.
Wild animals usually evade the area and eat the animals.
Learning points.
Diversification that is, one should invest in more than one business. This guarantees income

Educational research. One should carry out research to identify opportunities and to acquire
skills associated with the opportunities.
Namusoke realized the need for adversity. She felt like she needed to break out from the
pineapple business. Many people in her area were making various pineapple products like juice,
others sundried the pineapples to make chips that they sold to the public as desert. There was a
ready market for these products. In 2009, she started the munanansi business by boiling crushed
pineapples along side crushed ginger and tea leaves, sugar is added to make the concoction
sweet.
Mariam was motivated by the high demand for pineapples juice and other pineapple products so
she got creative and embraced other way of adding values that is, preparing munanansi
Source of finance
She got the finances to start this venture from her personal savings. This can also be termed as
equity financing
Challenges.
Her biggest challenge is the high prices of pineapples especially during scarcity. This forces her
to hike juice prices so as to earn a little profit
unreliable power supply .this makes her lose all her products as it usually goes bad without
refrigeration.
Rainy season and cold weather implies that people will refrain from cold drinks hers inclusive.
High costs of production. Mariam says that straws polythene bags, bottles and other materials are
usually expensive yet she needs a regular supply of them. This affects her profit margin.

Creativity.Mariam chose to differ from other pineapple product distributors and instead chose to
make omunanansi.
Supply people with a sample. When the product is appeasing, people usually make
recommendations and also continue purchasing it.
This has been ascertained by Doctor Emma Naluyima a trained veterinary doctor from Makerere
University.
How it started
Doctor Emma always wondered what her chickens were looking for whenever they out
scavenging for food especially dung She was also driven by the luck of sufficient feeds for her
chicken since they compete with humans for feeds like silver fish(mukene). She realized the hens
were looking for maggots and warmth so she decided to breed the latter. She had pigs that
excreted the dung and hence this would be a great opportunity for her to acquire the maggots.
Source of finance
Doctor Naluyiima clearly states that she incurs no costs in acquiring maggots and worms. All she
requires is the dung which is readily available from the pig firm and patience for house flies to
lay eggs that later hatch into maggots.

Challenges
Collection of dung from the pigs, exposing it to house flies which later lay eggs that later become
maggots. This process is tiresome.
