1 a. Discuss the basic characteristics of micro-strip antennas. Describe the feeding methods
currently employed. (05 Marks)
b. Design a rectangular microstrip antenna using a substrate (RT/duriod 5880) with dielectric
constant of 2.2, h = 0.1588 cms so as to resonate at 10 GHz. Draw a figure and indicate the
designed values. (05 Marks)
c. For a circular patch antenna, discuss the conductance and directivity parameters obtained.
(05 Marks)
d. With a figure, explain the radiation characteristics of Yagi Uda linear antenna. (05 Marks)

2 a. Prove analytically for an endfire array antenna BWFN  2 . (05 Marks)

resonant collinear dipoles. (08 Marks)
c. For a 10 element binomial array with a spacing of /2 between elements and having non-
uniform excitation determine in dB. Draw array factor power pattern. (07 Marks)

3 a. Differentiate between axial mode and broadside mode operation of helical antenna. Compute
the values of HPBW and directivity of a helix having circumference of 25 cm, number of
turns = 20, and spacing between turns = 1 cm at an operating frequency of 3 GHz. (06 Marks)
b. Discuss the features and design criteria of planar spiral antenna. (07 Marks)
c. List the design steps for a log periodic antenna. (07 Marks)

4 a. Discuss the commonly used rectangular aperture positions and their effect on radiation
characteristics. (10 Marks)
b. Explain how a parabolic reflector usage improves radiation characteristics. (06 Marks)
c. A spherical reflector has a 10 feet diameter. If at 11.2 GHz. The maximum allowable phase
error is /16, find the maximum permissible aperture. (04 Marks)

5 a. Determine the current distribution and the approx radiation pattern of a line source placed
along the z – axis whose desired radiation pattern is symmetrical about :

c. Define dimensionality theorem that defines the number of dimensions of the space of a
signal x(t). (04 Marks)

7 a. Derive and discuss the error probability equation assuming orthogonal signaling with non –
coherent detection. (10 Marks)
b. Given for a (3, 1, 2) convolution, code, g0= [1 0 0], g1 = [1 0 1], g2 = [1 1 1]. Draw encoder
circuit. Find G matrix vector for u = 101110 from G matrix. If received vector is
R = [001, 110, 101, 110, 110, 010, 001, 100], obtain an estimate of the message vector,
using viterbi decoding. Find code-length, constraint length, dfree. (10 Marks)

8 a. Explain the feedback decoding for a rate convolution code (3, 1, 2) with g 0 = [1 0 0],
g1 = [1 0 1] and g2 = [1 1 1]. Assume received sequence = [101, 111, 111, 010]. (10 Marks)
b. Desirable turbo-codes. A (3, 1, 27) RSC encoder is represented by g1(D) = 1 + D2 + D3 + D4
and g2(D) = 1 + D2 + D3 +D4. Draw encoder bock diagram. (10 Marks)
