What I KNOW
Hula Dance has only 6 traditional
movements. My grandmother always
said it was a simple dance style to learn
and it is all about the fluidity in your
movement.
Hula dancers tell a story through their
movements every time. My
grandmother used to teach us how to
symbolize the sun, moon, waves, and
air from the time we were kids and able
to understand.
Hula dancers wear traditional dress and
both men and women wear similar
bottoms in this dance. Grass skirts and
vine/flower crowns and flowers on the
arms and ankles are worn in various
colors. My grandmother has about 15
different colored flowers to wear from
when she was a young dancer in Luau’s
in Hawaii!
Hula dancing originated in the
Polynesian and Hawaiian Islands. My
family comes from the Island of Kuai in

What I LEARNED
Foot and hip movements often pull from
a basic library of steps including the
kaholo, kaʻo, kawelu, hela, ʻuwehe, and
ʻami.
You may notice that Hula Dancing seems to
have an incredibly smooth "flow" and the
movements are extremely fluid. These
movements are said to tell a story or
represent movements of nature such as
trees blowing in the wind or fish swimming
smoothly in the ocean.
The materials for the lei worn in performance
were gathered in the forest, after prayers to
Laka and the forest gods had been chanted.
The lei and tapa worn for sacred hula were
considered imbued with the sacredness of the
dance and were not to be worn after the
performance.
Hawaii and it has been a part of our
family from the beginning of our name.
My elders have performed hula dancing
since they were young!
Hula music has distinctive music that is
very soothing and involves the Ukulele
instrument. My grandpa plays the ukele
and my grandma hula dances to his
songs at every family event!

Hula has its origins in ancient history as
a ritual dance performed for the Volcano
goddess, Pele. It is said that her sister,
Hi'iaka originally performed the dance
for Pele.
By the mid-20th century, hula was
becoming more commercialized and
new instruments were added such as
the guitar and ukulele. During the
1970's a revival of sorts took place and
interest in the traditional dance was
renewed. There are two main types of
Hula performed today: the hula kahiko
(ancient) and the hula auana (modern).
