119PUBLISHERS’ PREFACE,
Education works capable of withstanding 1 long carcer without having to undergo several substantial re~
visions are very rare. The famous Arban method is, however, one such, and untit now it has nobly proved its
‘worth in forming several generations of Brilliant virtuosi and eminent teachers, thus proving the exceptional
Dorth of ite pedagowic qualities. The excellent principles which are at the heart of this admirable work remain
unchanging, bul certain details of performance which composers af former times could not have envisaged
leere later introduced and areto-day in current use. The tine is, therefore, ripe to modernise this famous
Method in accordance with the requirements of fundamental musical developments which have come about over
‘some years, fo add new technical exercises und (0 broaden its scope, always with scrupulous regard for the
teaching of Arba
We asked Monsicur Jean Maire, the remarkable principal of the Opéra-Comigue and af the Concerts Gotonne to
undertake this delicate revision, and te are happy t0 publish today a work that #8 truly modern but the classical
foundation of which can triumphantly withstand the test of time
When Arben conceived his Method, the cornet and bugle mere in greater vogue than the trumpet;nowfor some
decades the latter instrument has taken first place among the treble brass. That s why its given a preponderant
(placetosday, thus rendering our work entirely apt for the teaching both ef the modern trumpet and the cornct
‘and bugle,
‘The Method ie divided into three important parts, The First parton its own already constitutes acomplete method
“for instrumentalists who have no ambition (0 tackle later a professional career. The entire section of preliminary
Studies is tell developed, very clear and strictly progressive. Moreover, and this is very important, the ques-
liom af style is undertaken from the start as well as transposition, in which the student is speedily initiated,
‘without ever being rebuffed or discouraged, Indeed, at the present time all instrumentalists are frequently
Called upon to trenspose at eight, Scales, arpeggios, staceato, legato are here seriously studied, and the use
Of various mutes, so frequent today, ie the eubject of a special chapter. Twelve varied melodie studies end this
‘First volume. It can be seen, then, that right from Ge elementary studies, the teaching of this Metnod forms a
Imusician af (he same fime as an instrumentalist
‘The Second Part is devoted to the thorough study of advanced fingering. Particular attention should be
called to the very important group of 140 exercises for the independence of the Singers. Major, minor and chro-
‘matic scales already appear in the old edition, but in much too condensed a form. The student will now Sind
them developed into different patterns Jor each key, thus breaking the monotony of o practice that és indis~
Pensable, and completed by defective soates (pentatonic, hexaphonic and wholentone ) wich composers did not
ise in the time of Arban, but which since Debussy, Dukas and Ravel are frequently used. In his Second Part
‘will also be found ornaments (mordents, appoggiaturas, gruppetti etc.) as well as cadensas and the study of
‘iggerent tonguings. Nothing which hes a bearing on technique or fingering has been omitted.
Finally, the Third Part, wohich és concerned essentially with style and interpretation, is intented for instrux
mentatists elready provided ‘vith a solid technique, who wick to develop their artistic taste to attain indue course
the highest standard of performance. Music in (he truest sonse of the word here occupies an honoured position.
Teaeloe studies in style, fourteen characteristic studies and variations on famous airs allow-the student to ewl-
vate at the same time beauty of tone and clarity of performance in passege-cork. Twenty-five studies spe
cially written for this Method by some masters of modern music, and dealing with as many technical poculia-
‘ities, round off this monumental work. The student ts then ready to tackle a competition either for graduatin
or (o obtain a position in a symphony or tind orchestra. The preparation for this competition is carefully, loge
cally and very progressively studied; to allow the candidate every chance, a table containing a scheme of prac:
tise precedes long excerpts drawn from the most famous contemporary examination piccrs. To end, a chapter
‘has boon devoted to the high regisier, to the D trumpet and fo those parts so important and so difficul that are
0 be found in the masterpicons of Bach and Handel,
‘As can be seen, nothing has Been overlooked that will lead the student fo the beginnings of the mastery of Mis
art. Thanks to the masterly co-operation of Monsieur Jean Maire, who has made of this method a veritable en-
eyclopaedia, a standard work, we are certain that the work of Ardan will live for ever, thus justifying the
ambition of the great teacher from Lyons, who aleoays hoped (0 be the true leader of a school. This school 80
‘wonderfully begun rvill continue, af that we have no doubt, t0 prosper and fo form new masters, trac spiritual
