EMC VPLEX VIRTUAL EDITION

The EMC® VPLEX® family delivers data availability and mobility within, across, and between
data centers. EMC VPLEX Virtual Edition provides simplified management and non-
disruptive data mobility between ESXi hosts within a VPLEX cluster, even when that cluster
is split between two data centers within synchronous distances. VPLEX Virtual Edition takes
VPLEX technology and implements it as a set of virtual appliances running within an existing
ESXi infrastructure. VPLEX Virtual Edition is tightly integrated with VMware vSphere
providing easy to implement and simple management through a vSphere Web Client Plugin.
Using a vSphere plug-in to manage VPLEX Virtual Edition, VMware admins can follow simple
and familiar workflows from a single integrated management interface for increased
efficiency. VPLEX Virtual Edition enhances VMware Stretched Metro Clusters between two
sites at up to synchronous distances enabling continuous availability including VMware HA
over distance for application and VM data, as well as, instant VM moves over distance for
immediate workload relocation and load balancing for an ESXi environment.

SPECIFICATIONS
FEATURES
CONTINUOUS AVAILABILITY AND MOBILITY
• Transparently share, access, and relocate data and workloads over distance
instantaneously
DISTRIBUTED CACHE COHERENCE
• Automatically maintain synchronous read/write access to data from any
vDirector with VPLEX Virtual Edition across two clusters, allowing two sites to
share, balance, and automatically fail-over storage domains
ONLINE MOBILITY
• Move production volumes among arrays and between sites
• No host disruption or downtime
NETWORK-BASED MIRRORING
• Mirror data synchronously across multiple arrays
STORAGE POOLING
• Create a storage pool in the network

RELIABILITY AND AVAILABILITY

• Highly resilient and redundant cluster with no single point of failure
• Non-disruptive software upgrades
• Dual (A/B) storage network support
• Optional VPLEX Witness for enhanced availability

SYSTEM CAPACITIES PER VPLEX CLUSTER

• Maximum virtualized capacity No known limit
• Maximum distributed volumes 1,000
• Minimum distributed volume size 100 MB
• Maximum distributed volume size 64 TB*
• Number of initiators 3,200
* Volume size limit is dependent on vSphere release version
CONNECTIVITY
• VPLEX Virtual Edition uses iSCSI for all connectivity to ESXi Hosts and storage
arrays

READ & WRITE I/O LIMITS

IOPS Up to 10,000 IO/s per vDirector
MB/s Up to 1000 MB/s per vDirector

Stated limits are per vDirector. A VPLEX Virtual Edition configuration has a total of
8 vDirectors. Actual results may vary depending on I/O workload.
