Unit D Electricity

Lab Worksheet

Part one: Motors

1. Create a DC Motor by:

a) Put the two metal ends into the plastic battery case.
b) Put magnet into hole on top of plastic case.
c) Wrap your coil around the battery. Make sure to leave excess coil 180 degrees apart.
d) Put battery into case and place coil on the metal ends.
e) Write down your observations

Observations

2. Now take off metal coil. On both ends sticking our either side scrap off the coating on the TOP
HALF ONLY. Leave the bottom covered. Scrap the same half on the other end. Then place back on
your motor.

Observations

3. Why does one continuously spin and not the other?

4. Flip your battery around. Does it change the direction of coil spinning? Why or why not?

Part two: Measuring Voltage & Amps of Circuits

1. Create a series circuit containing one lightbulb.

a) Connect a voltmeter to the circuit before the electricity enters the light bulb (electricity
flows from – to +).
b) Record the Voltage: ___________________
c) Connect the voltmeter to the circuit after the electricity exits the light bulb.
d) Record the Voltage: ____________________
e) Is there a difference in Voltage? If so, why?

2. Repeat steps 1a- 1e but this time with an ammeter.

a) Amps before bulb:_________________
b) Amps after bulb:__________________
c) Is there a difference? If so, why?

3. Calculate the resistance before the bulb AND after the electricity goes through the bulb.
(V=IxR)

4. Create a Parallel Circuit with 2 bulbs.

a) Measure the voltage of the circuit at the beginning AND the end.
b) Records observations: Beginning_____________ & End______________
c) Is there a difference in Voltage?
5. Repeat using an ammeter
a) Record observations: Beginning_____________ & End______________
b) Is there a difference in Amps?

6. Calculate the resistance at the beginning of the circuit and at the end.

7. Now add 2 more bulbs onto your parallel circuit.

a) Measure the voltage and amps at the beginning and end of the circuit.

Volts: Amps:

b) Calculate the resistance for the beginning and end.

c) Does it differ from the 2 bulb parallel circuit? If so, why?
