1. Describe the principle of operation and applications of each of the following types of motors.
a) Hysteresis motors
b) Stepped motors
c) Brushless DC motors
d) Reluctance Motors
e) Self-synchronous permanent magnet motors
2. State two major differences between Brushless DC motors and Self-synchronous permanent magnet motors.
3. Describe the 3 types of braking in regard to each of DC motors and Induction Motors.
4. Synchronous motor drives used for servo drives can be classified as sinusoidal-waveform motors and
trapezoidal-waveform motors. Using formulae, circuit diagrams, block diagrams and idealised waveforms
where applicable; discuss the operation and differences between the two types of Motor Drives.
5. Explain the following for variable control of Induction motor. (i) The motor has higher efficiency and better
low speed performance when feed from a pulse-width modulated inverter instead of 6-step inverter. (ii) The
inverter has excellent low speed performance when fed from a Cycloconverter. (iii) Cycloconverter is
suitable only for low speed drives.
6. Deduce the mathematical expression for minimum and maximum currents for a class A chopper operated dc
motor with back emf.
7. List the advantages offered by dc chopper drives over line-commutated converter controlled dc drives.
8. A 4-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz, Y-connected, non-salient pole synchronous motor has the following parameters:
R = 1.5 Ω/phase; Xso = 15 Ω/phase at base speed.
The motor (excitation) induced emf/phase at 1500 rev/min is 200 V rms.
Vrated = 230 V rms/phase; Irated = 15 A rms/phase.
The motor is driven from a voltage source inverter the rms output voltage of which is proportional to
frequency (i.e., constant V/f drive). If the stator resistance R is neglected,
(i) find the load angles ẟ when the motor develops its maximum torque while running at the base speed
and at 750 rev/min and 250 rev/min?
(ii) find the maximum torque that the motor can develop at these three speeds.
