LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Morgan Larson Date: 10/17/17

Grade Level: 1st Grade Time: 9:00-10:00
School: Canistota Elementary

Reflection from the prior lesson:

Yesterday, we covered noun and verb agreements. In the following weeks, we will work on adding
details to sentences, so it is important that they have the understanding of noun and verb agreements
first. The students did pretty well, but it was difficult for students to understand that a plural noun
doesn’t require an -s for the verb and that a singular noun requires an -s at the end of the verb.

Lesson Goal(s)/ Standards:

1.L.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing
or speaking. c. Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences (e.g., He hops; We
hop). e. Use verbs to convey a sense of past, present, and future (e.g., Yesterday I walked home; Today I
walk home; Tomorrow I will walk home).

Lesson Objectives:
When given sentence strips with a noun and verb, students will put the parts together to make a
sentence that has noun-verb agreement without teacher assistance.

Materials Needed:
● Plastic gloves and masks
● Sentence strips
● Bandaids
● Construction paper booklet
● Glue

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

There are 13 students in the class - 5 girls and 8 boys. Currently, one student is on an IEP for reading
fluency and reading comprehension. His strongest subject is math. There are 3 students who receive
Title I services in reading and 2 that receive Title services in math. I conducted a learning styles inventory
on students, and the top classes were self, nature, and body. This means that these students will work
best on their own work, naturalistic students will like to use their senses of touch and doing things
hands-on but preferably outdoors, and body (kinesthetic) are very similar to nature, but don’t need the
outdoor involvement. Math occurs after lunch and on Tuesday and Wednesday, after the music time.
This often results in students having less focus than they do during the morning reading time. Keeping
math interactive and hands on helps cut down on the behaviors.
A.The Lesson (60 minutes)
1. Introduction (3 minutes)
a. Getting attention “First graders, we are going to transition into reading time.”
b. Relating to past experience/ prior knowledge “This week we have been working on
noun and verb agreements and making sure our sentences have both a noun and verb
that can work together.”
c. Creating a need to know “When we are writing or speaking, we have to use the correct
noun and verb together in order to make our sentence make sense.”
d. Sharing objective “Today, we are going to wrap up and review the noun-verb
agreements that we have discussed this week.”

2. Content Delivery (55 minutes)

I. Review Nouns and Verbs (10 minutes) - “We have been working with nouns and verbs.
We are going to review nouns and verbs with our noun and verb songs to sing.” Noun:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THKvhPPMlv8
“Let’s give some examples of nouns and verbs. What are some examples of a noun?
Good, remember a noun usually starts a sentence and is a person, place or thing. What
are some examples of verbs? Right, a verb tells that action that we are performing. Let’s
perform some actions, if I say the first grade students will hop on one foot. What is the
noun? Right and the verb is the action we are going to do.”
II. Practice Writing Sentences (20 minutes) - I will give students a noun, or a verb and
have them write a sentence out of it. “I am going to say either a noun or a verb and you
are going to write the rest of a sentence on your whiteboard. You can write about
whatever you want as long as it uses the noun or verb and they agree and make sense in
the sentence.” Nouns: the dog, our family, the kids, the cat, the bus, the school. Verbs:
ran very fast, looked at the moon, looks smart, colors neatly.
III. Sentence Surgery (25 minutes) - “First graders, we are all going to become doctors
today to help put our sentences back together. It’s very important that we put our
sentences back together. I am going to give you your gloves and masks to keep you
clean and safe. First, we are going to have to cut the verbs and nouns out and then
match them to make sentences that both make sense and have a verb and noun that
agree. I want you to put on your protective gear and get cutting and then I will explain
our next task.” I will then explain to student that we are going to put our nouns and
verbs together with a bandaid by performing surgery on the sentence. Then we will
create a book out of it.

3. Closure (2 minutes)

“Great work today first graders. Let’s review a little bit about noun-verb agreements in
sentences. I have written a few sentences on the board. I want you to raise your hand after I
have read it and tell me if it is correct or incorrect.” Go through sentences on the board. “Good
job, next week we are going to work on adding more details to our sentences.”
B. Assessments Used
● I will formally and informally assess while the students are putting their sentences together. I
will informally assess by walking around and seeing how students are doing, as well as, formally
when they are done and making sure the sentences make sense. I will try to do this as they go,
so they don’t get stuck incorrectly with glue.

C. Differentiated Instruction
Lower Level Learners - I will be sure to scaffold these students and be around them to help them read
the sentences and make sure they understand how to make the noun and verb agree. I may also have
the average and above learners sit by these students and help them, or have them help once they have
finished.
