Function of Communication and the Important to the Society

a. Introduction

Communication is the process of exchanging information between two or

more parties. In this process, one party transmits message by using a medium and
the other party receives the message. In the communication process, information
flows from sender to receiver. In order to make communication effective, the
sender should know the reaction of the receiver. When the receiver sends back
his response to the sender in connection with the message received, it is called
two-way communication. Through two-way communication, parties can exchange
their views, attitudes, feelings, new, messages information, data etc.

Many authors defined communication in various ways. Some of their

definitions are quoted as “Communication is the art of transmitting information,
ideas and attitudes from one person to another”, according to Emery and others.
According to Theo Haiman defined, “Communication means the process of
passing information and understanding from one person to another.” Furthermore,
According to Elliot Jaquer, “Communication is the sum totals of directly and
indirectly, consciously an unconsciously transmitted feelings, attitudes and
wishes”.

1. Communition conceptual definition

communication is a process that plays an important role in our lives. And become
the intermediaries used in the daily life of human beings to achieve their own
objective. From the very beginning of human civilization communicated, most of
which, in the form of oral, were through the writing and sketching of the cave walls.
Through this communication process humans can communicate information and it
always happens as if there is no beginning and end. The communication is the
interaction that works either in us or with others. According to smith (1966),
communication is a subtle network used by humans to interact with one another
and gain understanding (asiah bt ali & co., 2008). According to abdul aziz yusof
(2003), communication is a process that involves the presentation of ideas and
feelings to others (abdul aziz yusuf, 2003). In other words, communication is a
process of human interaction to control, understand, convey ideas and feelings or
convey information from one party to another.communication consists of four main
components ie starting from; source, where the person owns or carries an
information; information or message to be submitted; the channel used to deliver
2. functions of communication
According to Laswell and Wright (Baran & Davis, 2000), communication functions
can be categorized into four sections: information dissemination and warnings,
establishing relationships with groups within society, community cultural
transmission and entertainment. Establishing a Relationship with the Community
Communication plays a role in connecting groups in society through issues
discussed primarily in relation to the interests and needs of such groups. Examples
of Merdeka Day celebrations, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, Chinese New Year and
Deepavali. Not forgetting also through national issues such as solving Malay
language and unity of Malaysians. In this context, communication can establish a
harmonious relationship between major groups in Malaysia of different cultures,
religions and practices. Entertainment, Every day we get entertainment through
mass media. Its function as a great entertainer helps people deal with stress due
to problems that arise in everyday life. Print and electronic media provide various
forms of oral or non-verbal entertainment. A variety of entertainment programs are
presented to us all the time and it is up to the individual to choose the best for
them. Information and Warning Spread Communication serves to disseminate
current and up-to-date information on the human environment. Act to convey a
warning and a warning to a community or group involved in the event of anxiety
such as flash floods, haze and water or electric absence in an area. Persuasive
Communication Communication persuades is that there are speakers who intend
to influence the audience to agree or agree with the proposals or proposals he has
submitted. In other words, the speaker wants to change his audience from the point
of belief, attitude, or treatment. Among the examples of speeches that fall into this
type are political campaigns, road safety campaigns, anti-drugs, hygiene
campaigns, salespeople campaigns, quit smoking campaigns and so on.

3. Conclusion

In the nutshell, Communication is the sole source of conveying our thoughts

and dilemmas with other people. Through the use of healthy communication,
almost all kinds of problems can be solved since all the parties involved are
provided with a chance to put forward their thoughts as well as they are also
assured that they are being heard during all points of time throughout the course
of the process of communication. Whether professionally or personally, there is
always the need to maintain a healthy and open- minded communication with
people around you. Last but not the least, communication is an art which brings
two individuals closer in the long run while also enabling them to understand each
other’s thoughts easily.
