What strategies are you using that are I am going to continue to use PoW problems
successful and have demonstrated that are rigorous and taken from the PARCC
positive outcomes? What are you going to practice test or ANet. This exposure to
KEEP? rigorous problems will help students be
familiar with them, and also with the format
and wording of PARCC and ANet problems.

I will also continue to not help students that

haven’t started a problem yet. Students must
try something before they get any help, which
can include using CUBES to annotate the
problem, writing down the numbers and
performing some operation with them, etc.
This will continue to build persistence for
them and make sure they try on every
problem.
What strategies are you using that have
not been effective that yielded unpreferred
outcomes? What are you going to STOP
doing?
What practices are you not using that you
need to start doing to produce higher
student achievement? What are you going
to START Doing?
When and where will we see these
changes?
Although I don’t help students that haven’t
started a problem, I need to stop
hand-holding and giving them guiding
questions for every single step once they
have started the problem. Instead, they
need to build independence and solve
problems on their own. They should
reference back to their notes or the
textbook instead of asking me the
moment they get stuck. And I should
should tell them to reference their
resources (other than me) to solve the
problem first. I will also and be able to go
back to their notes. Giving them the
questions, not having them refer back to
their notes.
I will create more rigorous Do Nows, and
include more Toulmins!
Additionally during practice time, I will put on
a timer at the beginning and don’t answer any
questions regarding the content until the timer
goes off. Students need to use their notes or
can ask their peers.
Do Nows start next week.
Toulmins will be in class as well as on the
PoWs.
