Kalee Alter

ETE-322

Title: Word Study Station

Grade: First Grade

Area of Literacy: Phonics

Activity 1: Making Word families

Directions:

1. Chose a picture.

2. Write the word.

3. Write five words with the same ending.

4. Read the words to a partner.

Standard: CC.1.R.I.6 Craft and Structure: Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other
illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.

Supplies:

 Animal picture cards

 Lined paper

 Pencils

Activity 1 supports language arts because it has students use pictures to produce words

that are in the same word family. Students will identify the letters in the word when they

read it aloud to their partner. Students will write words with the same ending, which aides
in teaching students how to rhyme. Overall, this activity focuses on writing and speaking:

both parts of language arts.

Activity 2: Consonants in a Cup

Directions:

 Pick two cups

 Put the spoon in to make a word

 Write the words down

 Use five different consonants.

 Turn it in.

Standard: CC.1.L.5.a Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing)
to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.

Supplies:

 5 Cups (op, ug, ing,ed, es)

 Permanent markers

 15 spoons

 Zip-lock bags

 Lined paper

This activity supports language arts because students can form word families, which
is a very important part of rhyming. Students can also categorize words based on their
endings while developing new words on their own. Part of language arts is writing words
down after reading the word.
Activity 3: Blend hunt
Directions:

1. Find the digraph in the book

2. Put a check next to the digraphs on the card

3. Put your name on the card.

4. Turn it in.

Standard: CC.1.R.F.3.a Phonics and Word Recognition: Know the spelling-sound correspondences for
common consonant digraphs (two letters that represent one sound).

Materials:

 Index cards

 Book

Part of language arts is learning to read which starts with the ability to recognize

letters. Students will scan the book to look for letters that form one sound. First graders

will then write the digraphs they see, which is part of word study.
Activity 4: Word game

Directions:

 Play the game

 When you land on a space, say the word that goes with the picture.

 Use the word in the sentence

Standard: CC.1.SL.6 Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas: Produce complete sentences

when appropriate to task and situation.

Materials:

 5 different color pieces

 Game board

Language arts include reading pictures and orally producing sentences that include that

word. Students will include adjectives that describe the picture they are talking about.

Students will be able to describe what they see based off the picture they land on.
Activity 5: Making Words

Directions:

1. Use the letters to make as many words as you can

2. Write your letters on the Making Words Chart

3. What’s the mystery word?

Standard: CC.1.R.F.3.e Phonics and Word Recognition: Decode two-syllable words following basic
patterns by breaking the words into syllables

Materials:

 Making Words sheet

 Cut up letters

 Dry erase markers

This last activity allows students to find smaller words inside a larger word. Part of

language arts is identifying letters that form words. Language arts is heightened when

students write what they find.
