Dear Parents,

Thank you for the great turnout at this week’s combined MS/HS Parent Coffee where we were extremely lucky to have
two outstanding contributions. One from the ISM HS Dance Company and the other from our visiting Freedom from
Chemical dependency Counselors. We will follow up with more information about the FCD visit in more detail, but I did
want to include their website and some basic information about FCD in today’s bulletin. Their website is: www.fcd.org

FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Since 1976, they
have taught over a million students of all ages. Their mission is to:
 Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years.
 Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use
 Teach students and adults how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene
appropriately
 Educate students, parents, teachers, and administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol
and other drugs
 Promote awareness of drug addiction, including alcoholism, as a progressive, chronic, and often fatal disease
 Provide educational communities with the guidance and training necessary to implement comprehensive,
effective approaches to substance abuse prevention

FCD Prevention Specialists are highly trained professionals who have achieved long-term recovery from alcohol or other
drug addictions. This unique perspective enhances the credibility of their message and provides students with role
models for happy, healthy, drug-free living.

This program presents a perfect opportunity for discussing alcohol and other drug-related issues with your children.
Parental involvement is crucial to our efforts to reduce the risks teenagers face. We want our students to hear from both
school and home that we are concerned about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by adolescents, and that we are
committed to keeping our children safe.
This year, ISM will again conduct tests called Measures of Academic ProgressTM (MAP). From September 20th until October
8th all students in Grades 3-10 will take the MAP tests to assist in determining their instructional level. These tests will
measure academic growth across the school year in the areas of Reading, Language and Mathematics, and will be taken
again in Semester 2 of the 2010-11 school year. Your child will take the tests on a computer.

MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has
the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. The test becomes more difficult the
more questions the student answers correctly. When a student incorrectly answers a question, the test becomes easier.
Therefore, your child will take a test specifically created for his or her learning level.

Our students’ MAP results are reported in RIT (Rasch Unit) scores. This is a different type of score than a typical test that
provides a percentage correct. It is also different from many tests that provide results based on your child’s score
compared to others in his or her grade level. Instead the RIT score is an equal interval scale that is independent of grade
level. Test items match student performance, not grade, giving educators a clear yardstick for measuring progress. This
type of score increases the value of the tests as a tool for learning because it gives accurate information about where
each child is on his or her learning journey. This in turn, assists teachers in finding the appropriate instructional level for
each student.

We are looking forward to focusing our external testing at ISM on individual student growth and achievement. For more
information on MAP testing, please consult the NWEA (North West Evaluation Association) website at www.nwea.org for
the Parent Toolkit, or speak to Mr. Brown.

Sincerely,

William Brown Mike Dickinson

Theory of Knowledge Presentations
Shall I teach you what knowledge is? When you know a thing,
to recognize that you know it; and when you don’t know a
thing, to recognize that you do not know it.
  That is knowledge.
Confucius

On September 27th, 28th 29th and 30th the Little Theatre will be filled with Theory of Knowledge students completing
their  Internal  Assessment  presentations  for  the  course.    Students  will  be  presenting  investigative  reports  on  various
topics from the realms of art, history, natural science, and the human sciences.

TOK  students  must  explore  the  nature  of  their  selected  topic  and  critically  evaluate  beliefs  and  knowledge  claims
involved. These findings must be communicated clearly in their presentations.

We cordially invite parents to visit the Little Theatre and witness/discover what these students have accomplished thus
far in the course.  Each student will be given a schedule and will present in one of the five sessions – either the morning
or the afternoon slot on one of these dates.  Each student will be required to be in attendance in the Little Theatre for
the full session for his/her ToK class so he/she may have an early arrival or late release depending on the schedule.
Please  be  aware  that  students  cannot  simply  arrive  at  the  time  scheduled  for  their  particular  presentation.  The
schedule and the presentation topics will be posted on the ToK blog in the next few days.  http://tok.ism‐online.org/

We encourage parents to “drop in”.  It will give you a real sense of what the Theory of Knowledge course is all about
and the opportunity to see your children in action.

Sincerely,
