RESUMEN
v

ABSTRAC
The xylitol is a polyol used as a sweetener of five carbon atoms with a wide
application in different industries, mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries,
due to their important therapeutic properties such as anticariogenic independent
insulin metabolism, favoring the settle of calcium and antimicrobial action.
From the 70´s, it´s production went through a chemical process however due to its
high cost of production studies were accomplished on a new alternative way through
biotechnology. Among the main factors involved in the production of this process
are the type of microorganisms used, the properties and composition of the mid
cultivation and fermentation conditions and the lignocellulosic material used up; to
date studies made on the biological production of xylitol are refered to intermediate
cultivation systems also called batch.
The aim of this work is to produce xylitol using as a way of cultivation a hydrolyzate
obtained from a mixture of sweet sorghum bagasse and sugarcane with yeast
Candida tropicalis IEC5-ITV, from sugar mills in the state of Veracruz and isolated
in the Technological Institute of Veracruz.
In the literature there is no knowledge of the effect and the results offered use as a
way of cultivation hydrolyzate obtained from the mixture of bagasse sweet sorghum
and sugarcane, giving, them an agro-industrial waste added value in xylitol
production.
vii
The process past trough an experimental way to perform the optimization of the
conditions of acid hydrolysis to obtain a liquor with high concentrations of xylose,
resulting as best condition to treat the following: 40 min in the autoclave, a
concentration of 2.0% v/v H2SO4 and a relation of sweet sorghum bagasse /
sugarcane bagasse 1:1.5 (1 g SSB - 1.5 g SB) handling constant temperature
125 °C, with a pressure of 15 psi and the solid-liquid relation of 1:4.
The optimization results were used to characterize the batch way of cultivation that
was used for fermentative kinetics, which were enriched with salts providing
nutrients to the yeast, among these compound are CO(NH2)2, KH2PO4,
MgSO4.7H2O and yeast extract, in order to get better yields and productivity in the
production of xylitol.
The results show that the best performance and productivity were found in the
middle of the mixture containing CO(NH2)2 and yeast extract, obtaining a
concentration of xylitol 19.063 g/L, just like performance (YP/S)= 0.520 g/g and a
productivity (QP)= 0.227 g/Lh, while the way of cultivation only (witness) that did not
contain any of the nutrients showed low results, it´s considered that the use of salt
in the mid cultivation helps the yeast in it´s metabolism to get better yields and
productivity of xylitol, standardized the time in which began to produce the xylitol
ranging around 24 hours, while consumption approximated of the substrate was
within the 84 hours after start each a of the kinetic fermentative.

I. INTRODUCCIÓN
1
