“FORCES AND

MOTION”
Science Unit
Kindergarten
Student Name: Jill Krueger Intended Grade Level of Unit

Kindergarten

Theme of Unit Content Area:

Forces and Motion

Science

Classroom Demographics:

There are 22 students (11 boys and 11 girls) in Melissa’s class, also known as “Melissa’s Family
Group.” which is part of the Open Optional Program. Teachers believe that academics, social
skills and respect are important. Quarterly student portfolios are the focus of parent teacher
conferences and allow transparency in individual areas of strengths and needs for improvement.
There is one boy whose assessments show below level proficiency in most areas, however this is
likely due to having just turned 5 one week before kindergarten started and therefore is less
cognitively and socially developed than his older classmates. There is another male student who
has a lower tolerance for the pace of classroom activities and often has emotional outbursts or
refusal to participate. All students are kinestetic learners and lessons are designed to include
short direct instruction and ample exploratory play with embedded objectives. All students are
emergent readers and writers and have a strong command of letter frequency sounds. Most are
able to orally count to 50, are working toward writing numbers cardinally, recognizing place
value, and are learning patterns.
NGSS:

K-PS2-1: Planning and Carrying out Investigations

With guidance, plan and conduct an investigation in collaboration with peers.

K-PS2-1:Forces and Motion

Pushes and pulls can have different strengths and directions

K-PS2-1: Cause and Effect

Simple tests can be designed to gather evidence to support or refute student ideas about causes.

K-PS2-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or
different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

K-PS3.C Relationship between Energy and Forces

A bigger push or pull makes things speed up or slow down more quickly

Alaska Content Standards:

Math:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6-Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater

counting strategies.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.2-Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in

NGSS: K-PS2-1: Students will plan and conduct an investigation, gather information about
forces and their effect on objects

Math: Students will identify, compare, and describe measurable differences between objects,
and make viable arguments to support their findings.

English Language Arts Content: With prompting and support, students will ask and answer
questions about the main idea and draw and dictate informative text about the topic.

English Language Arts Literacy: Students will express thoughts and ideas using capitalization,
and end punctuation to support clarity in their writing.

BIG IDEA of the Unit:

forces upon them.
