Central Focus: Students will be learning about folktales, fables,


Subject: ELA, 3rd Grade and myths. They will learn what each of these literatures are and
the different elements to them. Students are also expected to be
able to recount these stories.

Students will be able to individually determine and explain the moral of a fable by analyzing the characters involved in
the story. Students are expected to earn an 8 out of 10.

“Let’s discuss more about what is a fable.”
Show class Elements of a Fable chart (already created on poster), then
compare what the students predicted about fables with the chart and video.

“Fables teaches a moral. Does anyone remember what moral means? (Moral
means the lesson of a story.)
Let’s watch this video to learn a bit more about moral. As you are watching
the video and listening to the story, I want you to think about the adjectives
that were used to describe the monkey.”

Discuss the video by talking about the character trait of the monkey. Ask, “At
the beginning of the story, how was the monkey described? (He was an honest
monkey.) “At the end of the story, was the monkey honest anymore? What
happened that lead him to become dishonest?” “Can someone explain what
the moral of the story was? (No matter what kind of trouble you’re in, lying
will only make it worst.)

Does anyone see a connection between the character trait of the monkey and
the moral of the story? (The monkey was considered honest at first, but when
he started lying to get out of trouble, it only made things worse for him in the

So, sometimes by analyzing the character traits and actions of the characters,
it can help us determine the moral of the lesson.

Now we are going to read another fable and analyze the characters to help us
determine the moral of the story.

Give students a copy of the fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper.” Read the minutes
story out loud to students. After reading the story answer the questions below
to help identify the moral of the story.

“What are some adjectives to describe the Ant?” “Where is the evidence? (at
least two evidence from the text)” “How did the story end for him?” Commented [3]: Awesome!

For the Grasshopper, tell students to get into pairs to complete it. Once
everyone is done, go over it to make sure that every student understood.
4. Guided Practice
Then discuss the moral of the story together with the class.

Ask questions to help students come to the realization that because the
hardworking Ant collected food for winter, while the grasshopper was more
carefree and didn’t worry about the future, the Ant was able to have food for
winter while the Grasshopper starved. So a moral could be that if you work
hard today, you can reap the benefit tomorrow. (include details from the story
explaining why)

Students will be asked to independently read the fable “The Monkey and the 15
Pea.” Then by analyzing the descriptions and action of the character, students minutes

Students will need to write 1 adjective, 2 evidence from the text to support the
description, an explanation of how the story ended for the character, and
determine and explain the moral with details from the text.
Before sending students off to complete their independent practice, ask
someone to explain what they’re supposed to be doing. Let class know that

Reflection on lesson:

Looking at the assessment, I should’ve made my direction clear and made sure that every student understood what they
were supposed to do. 10 students were able to state the moral of the lesson but did not support it with details from the
text. I should’ve also elaborated more about how the story ended for the characters because 7 students just wrote “bad” or
“good.” I should’ve told students to specifically explain how it ended.
