Instrumentation and measurement, MEng 3261
Year: III, Semester: II
Course objectives & competences to be acquired.
The course is intended to enable the students to:
 To understand the basic principle of measurement and instrumentation.
 To learn the various linear an d angular measuring equipment’s, their principle of
operation and applications.
 To learn about various methods of measuring mechanical parameters.

1. BASICS OF MEASUREMENTS AND INSTRUMENTATION


Definition of measurement, requirements, methods of measurement-direct method, indirect method, types
of instruments- mechanical, electrical and electronic instruments, instruments-absolute instruments,
secondary instruments, controlling function, functional blocks
2. CONCEPT OF MEASUREMENT

General concept – Generalized measurement System-Units and standards-measuring


instruments- sensitivity, readability, range of accuracy, precision-static and dynamic response-
repeatability-systematic and random errors-correction, calibration, interchangeability.
3. LINEAR AND ANGULAR MEASUREMENT

Definition of Metrology-Linear measuring instruments: Vernier, micrometer, interval


measurement, Slip gauges and classification, interferometry, optical flats, limit gauges-
Comparators: Mechanical, pneumatic and electrical types, applications.
Angular measurements: -Sine bar, optical bevel protractor, angle Decker – Taper measurements
4.TRANSDUCERS AND ITS TYPES
Primary sensing element, industrial parameters, transducers, types of transducers energy based
transducers, strain gauges, gauge factor, types of strain gauge, rosettes, thermistors, LVDT,
photo voltaic cell, smart sensors.
5. FORM MEASUREMENT

Measurement of screw Threads-Thread gauges, floating carriage micrometer-measurement of


gears-tooth thickness-constant chord and base tangent Method-Gleason gear testing machine –
radius measurements surface finish, straightness, flatness and roundness measurements.
6. LASER AND ADVANCES IN METROLOGY

Precision instruments based on Laser-Principles- laser interferometer-application in linear,


angular measurements and machine tool metrology, Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) -
Constructional features – types, applications – digital devices- computer aided inspection.
7. DISPLAY AND RECORDERS

Display devices, types of output devices, digital display methods, rear projection display, light
emitting diode, concept of LED, LCD, analog indicating instruments, recorders, types of
recorders.
8. MEASUREMENT OF POWER, FLOW AND TEMPERATURE RELATED PROPERTIES

Force, torque, power: -mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical Type-Flow measurement:
Venturi, orifice, Rota meter, and Pitot tube –Temperature: bimetallic strip, pressure
thermometers, thermocouples, electrical resistance thermistor.
Evaluation Mechanisms:
Individual assignment : 10%
Mid-semester exam : 30%
Individual/group project : 20%
Final examination : 40%
