‘Let there
Israel’s advanced technology may help provide
solutions to world’s growing water crisis

hen Seth Siegel pub-
lished “Let There Be
Water” in September
2015, two things were

clear. First, a worldwide crisis over
the ever-shrinking access to water was
manifesting itself and would become
only worse. Second, Israel, a coun-
try without many obvious sources
of fresh water, had become a global
fountainhead (sorry sorry sorry) of
water technology.

Now, Mr. Siegel, an entrepreneur
whose success at business has allowed
him to devote his time to philanthropy
and to transform himself into a knowl-
edgeable advocate for Israel, says that
“the world is in a much more precari-
ous situation today than it was in 2
1/2 years ago, because there is more
water scarcity. That’s almost exactly
on the timetable I wrote about. By
2025, you will be talking about mil-
lions and millions of people who are at
risk of becoming water refugees,” leav-
ing their parched homes in a desper-
ate search for drinkable water, leaving
political instability in their wake and

spreading fear before them.
“And this is global,” Mr. Siegel said.
“From Australia to Asia to South
America, everyone now is dealing
with severe water scarcity problems.”
The problem is evident in California,
he added, and a few weeks ago water
scarcity issues in Capetown, South
Africa, made headlines. And despite
what we see in the headlines, which
represent the government of Iran
trying to cover up underlying issues,
“there is broad-based civil disobedi-
ence over water. Water riots.
“This isn’t just one country. It’s all
over the place. And authoritarian
countries are having it the worst.
 “All of these phenomena are really
accelerating now,” Mr. Siegel continued.
“There are about 80 million people in
sub-Saharan Africa, and 600 million Indi-
ans.” If the problem were going to become
severe in, say, 2050, “who really cares?
That’s a very long time away. But 2025 is
not so far away. It’s just barely double the
time that it’s been since my book came
out. It’s nothing.
“We will be facing very real problems
that will affect how we grow our food and
how we run a civil society,” he said.
All this is grim. Why is it in a section
about Israel at 70?

Because “not everywhere, but many
places are starting to understand that we’d
better get going on this,” Mr. Siegel said.
“And they’re going to Israel for guidance
on what they could and should be doing.
And that is a change.
“And in Israel, technology is growing by
leaps and bounds. There is hardly a week
that has gone by when we haven’t heard
of a new breakthrough in something like,
say, precision agriculture. That’s primarily
about where and how you apply water and
how much water you apply, so that you
don’t use water that ends up being wasted.
That is an important new area of research
out of Israel.
“And there’s also the decentralization of
infrastructure. Historically, desalinization
and wastewater treatment plants have
tended to be big structures. Israel is devel-
oping expertise in decentralizing it, so you
can buy something that’s container-sized
as a desalinization or wastewater treat-
ment plant.” (When he says that some-
thing is the size of a container, Mr. Siegel is
talking about a shipping container.)
“That’s really exciting — a community

a good fit for a lot of places around the

ordechai Schachter didn’t know
he soon would be a soldier
when he traveled from his native
Romania to pre-state Israel in
1948. He was a 17-year-old with a passion for
Zionism, and he knew that he was leaving a
country that was becoming increasingly anti-
Semitic, just a few years after at least 270,000
Romanian Jews had died during the Holocaust.
At the end of 1947, Mr. Schachter had boarded
one of two boats, each carrying about 7,500
Jews, bound for the promised land, despite a
British ban on Jewish emigration to mandatory
Palestine. Many of the passengers were lone
children whose parents sent them on the boats
to escape Romania. Mr. Schachter’s parents had
planned to be on the boat, but his father fell ill
before the trip, so they stayed behind.
The journey went as planned until the boats
hit the Dardanelles, a narrow strait in north-

not to resist when the boats were rerouted to
Cyprus. Three months later, the British agreed
to allow the children to go on to Palestine.
Mordechai Schachter was one of those
children.
Mr. Schachter remembers arriving in
Ranaana, and eating hamentaschen and
oranges on his first week there. In Ranaana he
also met one of his three brothers, who had
arrived in pre-state Israel four months earlier.
Five weeks later he was ordered to join the
army, where he was taught how to shoot a gun
and given an Italian rifle from World War I and
25 bullets. Others got “whatever they could
find,” Mr. Schachter recalled.
“Everybody had a different type of weapon
at that time,” he said. “They had very little
ammunition.”
Mr. Schachter remembers the exuberance
people felt in Israel a few weeks later, on May

independence.
“Everybody was dancing in the streets,
celebrating,” he said.
The next day, a coalition of neighboring
Arab states — Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Leba-
non, and Iraq — invaded the new coun-
try. Israel’s War of Independence would
end the next year with an Israeli victory.
Seventy years later, as Israel prepares
to mark the milestone anniversary, Mr.
Schachter talked about his role in Jewish,
and world, history.
Mr. Schachter was assigned to be a mor-
tar commander, which meant that he did
not have to be in the first line of fire, he
said. However, he had to deal with incoming
mortars fired at him from the enemy side.
“We were in a couple of cases in very
dangerous situations, but you don’t think
about it because you are too young to real-
ize how dangerous it is,” he said.

Poland, Hungary, Iran, and Yemen, as well
as volunteer fighters from the United States,

“It wasn’t easy for a commander to
give orders,” he said. “Sometimes he had
to give orders and somebody else had to
translate the orders.”
One of his units had a large contingent
of Yemeni Jews, so Mr. Schachter quickly
learned how to communicate in Hebrew.
“We got very friendly because we fought
together, so you’re like brothers,” he said.
The war ended the next year. (Iraq,
Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria each signed
armistice agreements with Israel between
February and July of 1949, but Iraq did
not sign an agreement.), Mr. Schachter
stayed in the army. More than 6,300 sol-
diers were killed just before or during the
war; that number represented nearly 1
percent of Jewish settlers in Israel at the
time. The Israeli army had more than
100,000 Israeli soldiers by the end of the
war, including 12 brigades.
After serving in the army for two years,
Mr. Schachter took a job at a yeast produc-
tion factory in Tel Aviv. He later studied
television and radio repair at a school in

around the world. After four years in Italy,
he returned to Israel, finding a job at a
chemistry lab in Haifa and later in a govern-
ment computer center in Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is also where he met Fanny,
the woman who would become his wife. At
a party, the pair discovered that they both
came from the same town in Romania, Boto-
sani, in the northern part of the country.
Three months later, at Passover, Mr.
Schachter went to visit his family, who by
then had moved to America, settling in
the Bronx. They had survived World War
II because Russia occupied Botosani right
before its Jewish residents were set to be
deported to concentration camps.
A month after Mr. Schachter arrived in
the United States, his father died, so he
decided to stay in New York and found
a job working for a computer servicing
company. He kept in touch with Fanny
via letters for a year before returning to
marry her in Israel. The couple came
back to the United States to live. The
couple would have two children and two
grandchildren, relocating to Teaneck and
joining the local Conservative shul, Con-
gregation Beth Sholom.
Mr. Schachter, who still works part time
for the same computer servicing company,
says that although he does not consider
himself “a hero,” he looks back at his time
fighting for Israel with pride.
“You are proud of it,” he said. “You think
you were there when this came up, and
that’s something that doesn’t happen to
every generation. Being there as a soldier,
you feel happy, you feel good about it.”

The Future of Israel is in the Negev
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev gives Israel supporters a whole new way to connect to the Jewish State
Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, said that
“the future of Israel lies in the Negev,” a desert area that
comprises 60 percent of the country’s land mass.
So it may come as a surprise that many dedicated Israel
supporters have little experience in the Negev region.
That is changing. Having gotten to know Israel through its
holy sites in Jerusalem or its beaches in Tel Aviv, more and
more Israel lovers are looking south to the Negev for a new
way to connect to the country.
Founded in 1969 with a unique mission to develop the
region, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) is the driv-
ing force behind the ecosystem of technology innovation
and business collaboration that has been booming in Beer-
Sheva over the past few years.
In 2013, Beer-Sheva’s Advanced Technologies Park (ATP)
opened just steps away from BGU’s Marcus Family Campus,
with the university as a key partner and investor in its estab-
lishment. This growing high-tech industry park already has
five buildings with 1,500 employees of Israeli startups as
well as international corporations such as Oracle, IBM, and
Deutsche Telecom.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. recently
announced it is opening an R&D facility in the ATP next
year. Rafael will be hiring some of the best and brightest
graduates from BGU, which produces a third of Israel’s engi-
neers each year, and the highest number of Israel’s cyber
security engineers.
BGU’s Cyber Security Research Center is leading the
world in uncovering online vulnerabilities and devel-
oping technologies to safeguard Israel and its allies
from cyber attacks. That’s why Israel’s Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has called Beer-Sheva the “cyber
capital of Israel” and why entrepreneurs refer to the
Negev as “Silicon Wadi.”
The Israel Defense Forces understands. The IDF
is moving its elite cyber and high-tech units to Beer-
Sheva adjacent to the ATP, in order to take advantage
of BGU graduates and researchers, and the cyber eco-
system that is blooming in the desert.
With the Negev desert as a “living laboratory,” BGU
scientists are also making the desert bloom in areas
such as desert agriculture and water research.
BGU’s Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research,
located at the University’s Sede Boqer Campus,
recently partnered with Northwestern University,

Community Yom Ha’atzmaut
celebration in Teaneck
On Wednesday evening, April 18, 2018, a
gala Teaneck community-wide event will
take place at the Jewish Center of Teaneck
to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the
founding of the State of Israel. The eve-
ning will seek to commemorate both Yom
Hazikaron, the Memorial Day for the more
than 23,000 soldiers and civilians who
have sacrificed their lives in defense of the
State of Israel or were murdered in acts of
terror, as well as Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel
Independence Day.
The event will open with tfillat mincha,
followed by a Yom Hazikaron presentation
from Matan Dansker, a squad commander in
the Golani Brigade. We will then participate
in a spirited tfillat maariv chagigit accord-
ing to the format created by the Israeli Rab-
binate, followed by remarks by Rabbi Yosef
Adler of Congregation Rinat Yisrael. The
second part of the program will continue in
the Jewish Center’s social hall, which will be

In addition to regaining Castel early today, Jewish
forces composed of Irgunists and Sternists, stormed
and captured Deir Yassein, an Arab village near Jerusa-
lem and four miles from Castel. They reportedly used
eight armored cars and blew up a number of houses in
the attack in which Arab casualties, police officials said,
were comparatively heavy. Irgunist forces also occu-
pied the Arab village of Ein Karim, in the same area.
After capturing Deir Yassein, the Jews discovered
a large quantity of arms of various makes, including
many British sub-machine guns which had been confis-
cated from the Irgun. The Jewish forces lost three men
in the battle, while four others were wounded.
Immediately after raising the Jewish flag over the
captured Arab village, the commander of the Jewish
unit said he was holding 100 male prisoners as “hos-
tages” in return for the safekeeping of a kidnapped
Jewish family. The International Red Cross mission in
Palestine was informed accordingly. The remainder
of the Arab population was permitted to leave, while
the prisoners were transferred by truck to Jerusalem
where they were taken to an Irgun camp.
Haganah forces, meanwhile captured Wadi Sara,
another Arab stronghold dominating the road
between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. After a brief but sharp
exchange with Iraqi troops, they succeeded in occupy-
ing another nearby camp evacuated by the British ten
days ago.

— The Arab town of Ramleh, about
15 miles from Tel Aviv, was invaded
today by strong Haganah forces, while
in Jerusalem, the all-Jewish modern
Rehavia section of the city was shelled
for a short time by Arab mortars.
Haganah’s occupation of the all-
Arab town of Ramleh was aimed at
loosening Arab control of the Tel
District 37 State Legislators Aviv-Jerusalem road. The Jewish units
searched the town for concentrations

and fired on the plane.
On the Jerusalem end of the main
road, the Jews who were earlier
today and the Arabs were forced to
retreat beyond the effective range
of their own batteries, which gave
the Jews their first relief from shell-
ing in over a day. Simultaneously,
the Arabs attacked four nearby Arab
villages which are occupied by the
Jews but were repulsed by strong
counterattacks.
Near Rehovoth a British ammuni-
tion and arms train was attacked by a
group of Jews. In a cafe in the town,
several Jews and British soldiers
clashed and one Briton was killed.
The arms of several of the soldiers
were stolen.
The British Army reported that the
Jews had attacked Mashi Rabdin, an
Arab village near Tiberias in northern
Palestine. The report said that huge
clouds were seen rising over the vil-
lage and that a number: of women
and children had fled to Tiberias, but
that some 40 women and children
remained behind.

Jewish areas as instituted today under
the direction of Eliezer Perlson, vice-
mayor of Tel Aviv. The control board
includes representatives of local coun-

the final session stated in part: “After 27
years of foreign and atrocious rule over
Palestine which the Mandatory Power

will establish its state and indepen-
dence in the homeland. The state to be
established will be ruled through jus-
tice, freedom and equality for all inhab-
itants, regardless of race or creed.”

Calling upon the Palestine Arabs and
the neighboring Arab states to assure
peace and cooperation, the declaration
continued: “Together, we will build the
state as citizens with equal rights, in
mutual respect for our freedom, which
is a sister to yours.” It concluded: “Our
lives are sacred for the defense of the
homeland. The God of Israel will be our
assistance!”
The Actions Committee will seek to
obtain international recognition of the
central Jewish authority from individ-
ual governments. It is understood that
the new authority will also endeavor to
secure an international loan.
The Actions Committee ratified, by
a vote of 44 to 32, the Haganah-Irgun
military agreement and decided to float
an internal loan of $20,000,000 for

Attlee Rejects Plea to
Legalize Haganah, Expel Arab

British Government has rejected a plea
by the Board of Deputies of British Jews
that the Haganah be given legal status
and that Arab invaders of Palestine be
expelled by the British Army, it was
revealed here today with the release
of an exchange of correspondence
between Prime Minister Clement Attlee
and Prof. Selig Brodetsky, president of
the Board.
Pointing to the difficulties encoun-
tered by British forces in Palestine
when they attempted to suppress Jew-
ish extremists, the Prime Minister
asserted that rounding up their “Arab
counterparts” would prove difficult. He
refused to legalize the Haganah on the
grounds that the government refuses to
share its responsibility for the mainte-
nance of law and order with any other
force. He added that the government
would continue to enforce impartially
its ban against the increase of stores of
offensive weapons by either side, but
would not “remove from either com-
munity arms which may legitimately be
regarded as necessary for their defense”
when the British evacuate.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for For-
eign Affairs Hector McNeil, addressing a
meeting of Glasgow University students,
denied reports that the British were arm-
ing the Arabs in Palestine. He insisted
that neither side has received any weap-
ons. He asserted that “no one has shown
one piece of evidence” that British arms
are filtering through to Palestine.

How 1948 changed
American Jews

n the dead of night, one year after
L u x u r y P r i v a t e To u r s Israel’s establishment, three stu-
dents climbed up a tower at the
Jewish Theological Seminary in
BY JOE YUDIN Manhattan and raised the Israeli flag.
The next morning, the Conservative
rabbinical school’s administration took
it down.
That act of surreptitious Zionist pro-
test was one of several at JTS during the
years surrounding 1948, when Israel
gained independence, Michael Green-
baum wrote in an essay in “Tradition

chancellor, Louis Finkelstein, felt that
American Jews should not focus all their
efforts across the ocean. He also had to
appease a board of trustees who were
wary of Jewish nationalism.
But the students persisted. Once, they
sang the Israeli anthem, “Hatikvah,”
after graduation ceremonies. Another
time, they convinced their colleagues
at the Union Theological Seminary, the
Protestant school across Broadway, to
play the anthem from its bell tower.
Today, nearly all American Jewish
institutions are vocally, even passionately
pro-Israel. But in the years after the Jew-
ish state won its independence 70 years
ago, that feeling was not yet universal.
Before the Holocaust, Zionism itself
was polarizing among American Jews.
Many, especially in the Reform move-
ment, felt that support for a Jewish
homeland would cause their loyalty to
America to be called into question. The
other side was represented by Louis
Brandeis, the first Jewish Supreme Court
justice, who saw no conflict between
American values and Zionist aspirations.
By the time Israel declared indepen-
dence on May 14, 1948, American Jews,
scarred by images of the Holocaust and
Nazism and inspired by newsreels of
tanned kibbutzniks, largely were sup-
portive of Zionism. But they were not yet
turning out for organized political advo-
cacy and mass tourism to Jerusalem and
Tel Aviv. Instead they were getting used
to the idea of a Jewish sovereign state —
gradually incorporating it into their cul-
ture, prayers, and religious outlook.
“After the mid-1930s, the majority of
American Jews had come to be positive
one way or another about the idea of a
Jewish homeland,” said Hasia Diner, the
director of the Goldstein-Goren Cen-
ter for American Jewish History at New
York University. “While 1948 on the one

hand was very exciting and had lots of
communal programming and celebra-
tions, it was slightly anticlimactic in the
sense that opposition had been gone for
at least 10 years.”
North American Jewish support for
Israel was turbocharged by the Truman
administration’s quick recognition of
the state, and by the Israeli army’s vic-
tory against the Arab states in its war of
independence.
In February of that year, in just one
day, in just one stop in Montreal, Golda
Meyerson (later Meir), raised $400,000—
that’s the equivalent of some $4 million
today — on behalf of the provisional
state. In the weeks after independence,
she started a drive in the United States
and Canada for $75 million more. (That’s
about $750 million in 2018 dollars.)
“There was a sense that once America
recognized the state, Zionism had won,
and everyone wanted to link with the
winners,” said Jonathan Sarna, a profes-
sor of Jewish history at Brandeis Univer-
sity. “It was growing very quickly, it took
in all of these refugees, which solved that
problem.”
After Israel secured its independence,
American Jews began to engage with the
new nation in small ways. There was
no rush of tourism, but American Jews
would show their support by buying
goods from Israel, reading books about
Israel, or holding Israeli dance classes in
their community centers.
“Here’s this new state they had to kind
of develop this relationship with, and the
cultural realm was really the place it was
happening,” Emily Alice Katz, author of
the 2015 book “Bringing Zion Home,”
told the New Books Network podcast.
“There were these years in which it
wasn’t as much about rallying the troops
for these massive outpourings of aid or
political influence, but it was more of
this coming to know Israel.”
Part of the reticence to support
Israel stemmed from the ethos of 1950s
America, with its focus on suburban
growth, the melting pot, and assimila-
tion. Against that backdrop, American
Jews were trying to prove they belonged
as social and cultural equals in Ameri-
can society. So again they were fearful
of dual loyalty charges that could stem
from vocal support for a Jewish state.
In a watershed moment in that debate,
in 1950 Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion sent a letter to Jacob Blaustein,
president of the American Jewish Com-
mittee, which for many years had been
hesitant to throw its support behind the
Jewish national movement. Ben-Gurion
pledged not to speak for American Jewry
or intervene in its affairs, and to dial down
his insistence that American Jews move to
Israel. In exchange, Blaustein recognized
“the necessity and desirability” of sup-
porting Israel in its nation building.
“The 1950s were the heyday of Amer-
ican Jewish assimilation,” said Sara
Hirschhorn, an Israel studies professor at
Oxford University. “It was the postwar era,
when American Jews were benefiting from
the same things everyone else was benefit-
ing from — the GI bill, all kinds of ways for
people to move into the middle class — and
they wanted to continue to make the most
of that.”
Nevertheless, Israel began to show up
in American Jewish religious practice. A
Conservative prayer book published in
1949 had readings about Israel, but not
the prayer for Israel that now is standard
in many prayer books. Religious schools
gradually shifted their pronunciation of
Hebrew from European Ashkenazic to
Sephardic-inflected Israeli. Non-Zionist
religious leaders, like JTS’s Finkelstein,
eventually were sidelined.
The biggest shift, Sarna said, was Ameri-
can Jewry viewing Judaism’s history as one

of “destruction and rebirth.” That outlook
posed the Holocaust and the establish-
ment of Israel as its two poles, and Sarna
said that it remains dominant in Ameri-
can Jewish thinking today. He noted that
Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day and
its Independence Day are commemorated
about a week apart by design.
“The theme of destruction and rebirth
becomes a very important theme in the
lives of American Jews,” Sarna said. “So
much so that American Jews don’t know
the history of Zionism going back, and
have bought the idea that it’s all about the
Holocaust being linked to the birth of the
State of Israel.”
American Jews became more open in
their celebration of Israel about a decade
after 1948. “Exodus,” the 1958 novel by
Leon Uris that painted Israel in heroic
terms, was a national best-seller and in
1960 it was adapted into a popular movie
starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint.
In 1961, the Yiddish star Molly Picon starred
in a Broadway musical, “Milk and Honey,”
about American Jews visiting Israel. “Milk
and Honey” ran for more than 500 perfor-
mances. A few years later, the Israel Pavilion
at the New York World’s Fair showcased the
country’s charms. And as Cold War tensions
continued into the 1960s, Israel began to be
seen as a U.S. ally against the Soviet Union.
In 1967, Arab armies again threatened
Israel’s existence. Between the anxious
buildup to that war and Israel’s lightning
victory, American Jewish acceptance of
Israel had turned to adulation, placing
the Jewish state at the center of their iden-
tity. The few dissenters were found on the
non-Zionist left, among various charedi
Orthodox movements, and in the quiet
grumblings of some mainstream leaders
and rabbis who think the emphasis on
Israel has thwarted the development of
distinctly American Judaisms.
“Slowly but surely, Israel became more
important for American Jews,” Sarna
said. “1967 is at once a reflection of Isra-
el’s growing importance, but at the same
time it is a great intensification of Israel’s

— At least 34 Jews were officially
reported killed today in one of the
fiercest Arab attacks Palestine has
seen since the outbreak of hostilities.
An 11-vehicle convoy en route to the
Hadassah Hospital on Mt. Scopus was
forced to halt outside the Arab Sheik
Jarrach quarter of Jerusalem when
the leading trucks — carrying food
and medical supplies to the hospital
and to the Hebrew University — were
blown up by Arab-planted mines.
As soon as the convoy was stopped,
Arabs perched on adjacent rooftops
opened up with a blazing barrage
that resulted in immediate casual-
ties, most of whom were medical
personnel. Among those killed was
Dr. Chaim Yasski, head of the Hadas-
sah Medical Organization in Palestine
since 1928, who was well-known in
the United States. Dr. Edward Joseph,
chief surgeon at the hospital, was
slightly injured.
Haganah members trying to reach
the attack area had to battle their way
for hours through mined roads. Arab
reinforcements, however, succeeded
in reaching the sector with compara-
tive ease. Police officials, who said
that in addition to the 36 Jews killed,
21 were seriously injured and three
slightly, reported that British troops
using heavy machine guns and Email
mortars beat off the Arabs after six
hours of fighting. The British were
also reported to have brought many
of the wounded to the Hadassah Hos-
pital before they succeeded in estab-
lishing a truce.
At late reports, several of the con-
vey vehicles were reported ablaze,
while many charred bodies lined the
road. A high British police official,
said to have been fighting alongside
the Arabs, was killed shortly before
the end of the battle in which the
Arabs, many of them behind sandbags
and stone walls, sent two armored
cars soaked with gasoline in a “fire
bomb” attack against the stationary
Jewish trucks.

ony and “are now in full retreat.” Later
reports said that a Jewish force pursu-
ing the Arabs in the direction of Jenin,
Arab stronghold in central Palestine,
was repulsed when the retreating
Arabs opened fire on their pursuers.
A force of 30 armored cars from
Nahalal, summoned by the Mishmar
Haemek fighters to aid in routing the
guerrillas, succeeded in reaching the
battle area in time to hit the enemy’s
flank with concentrated fire, resulting
in the Arabs beating an even hastier

who represented the organization in
the United States for several years,
was among the Jewish casualties in the
Mishmar Hasmek engagement. Jewish
sources claimed 38 Arabs were killed
in today’s battle.
The U.S. consulate here revealed
today it would evacuate by air all
American citizens wishing to leave Pal-
estine because of present-day hostili-
ties. The consulate is urging all other
Americans who choose to remain
in the Middle East to leave Palestine
before all vehicular traffic is cut off.
The consulate office here is operat-
ing on a skeleton staff, with many staff
members assigned to Haifa.

are siblings living in
very different homes

room in the house freely and necessarily
feel at ease there, even though the house

into their parents’ home, while Jews else-
where are like the children who have set
up a new home. Jews around the world
are free to create their own new spaces as
they understand them, with no limitations
stemming from parental baggage. Israeli
Jews face a more arduous task. Feeling free
to innovate when you have moved back
into the home of one’s parents is more
challenging, she says.
I appreciate both metaphors of fam-
ily dynamics. This is an important con-
versation. Yet I am uncomfortable. The
shift from understanding the relationship
between Israeli Jews and world Jewry as
one between parents and grown children,
to appreciating them as the relations
between siblings, is interesting, challeng-
ing, and compelling. But the constraints
that Rabbi Koch Epstein describes feel for-
eign to my experience as an Israeli.

While the sibling metaphor is a helpful way to under-
stand the realities and challenges of Jews today, I would flip
it: World Jewry, not Israelis, are the grown children living in
their parents’ home; indeed, Jews have been living outside
Israel, with no sovereignty and as a minority, for more than
2,000 years.
Thus, Jews around the world are living in their parents’
environment and struggling, often with success, to break
free from old traditions and ways, despite being in an
all-too-familiar environment.
Israeli Jews, on the other hand, are the siblings who have
broken with old family ways and are meeting new situations
at every turn. Being the majority and having Jewish sover-
eignty are new experiences for Jews, even after 70 years of
having a state.
As we mark our 70th anniversary as a state, we have a
lot of work ahead of us as we figure out how, for example,
we should treat minorities ethically and Jewishly. We must
continue asking how an ethical Jewish army should
function, how we should collect taxes and spend gov-
ernment revenues, and many more issues.
Jews in Israel today face new challenges and novel
circumstances. But we also have new tools to use
because there exists a state with a Jewish majority and
sovereignty. In their new home, they have the free-
dom to innovate, to experiment, and to meet those
challenges and circumstances in their own way.

the hope that the U.N. General Assembly special

using the “Z-word” in their mes-
saging and literature, I’m told,
“Zionism doesn’t poll well.”
True, not polling well is one
of today’s great sins. But imag-
ine what our world would be
like if our ancestors had feared
the polls. The American Revo-
lution wouldn’t have polled
well. Suggestions that North-
erners crush slavery in 1860
wouldn’t have polled well. And
proposing a new Jewish state in
1897 wouldn’t have polled well
either. At the time, most Euro-
pean Jews believed enlightened
Europe was outgrowing anti-
Semitism. That polled well.
Let’s learn from our heroic
predecessors — and from femi-
nists, gays, and African-Amer-
icans, whose first attempts to
defend their rights didn’t poll

Reclaim the Z-word: Zionism.
You cannot defeat those delegitimizing
Israel by surrendering Zionism, the move-
ment that established Israel. If a century
ago Zionism brought pride back to the
term “Jew,” Jews and non-Jews today must
bring pride back to the term “Zionist.”
In his book on “the strange career of
the troublesome” N-word, the African-
American Harvard Law professor Randall
Kennedy explains the “protean nature” of
political words. Groups can triumph with
linguistic magic by defining themselves
and their aims; when enemies define
them, they lose. Kennedy warns against
allowing the hater to define the hated. But
that’s what is happening.
First, shame on them. Shame on the
anti-Zionists who single out Jewish nation-
alism, meaning Zionism, in a world orga-
nized by nationalisms, and call it racist.
Shame on them for libeling a democratic
movement. Shame on them for ignoring
Judaism’s national-religious duality, which
allows non-Jews to convert into the Jewish
religion and join the Jewish nation, mak-
ing Zionism among the least biologically
based, least racist, most permeable forms
of nationalism. And shame on them for
racializing the national conflict between
Israelis and Palestinians — inflaming
hatred, making peace more elusive.
Alas, shame on us, too. Zionism should

be a more popular term than Israel. Until
1948, Zionism was the movement affirm-
ing that Jews are a people with a homeland
and that like other nations, Jews have the
right to establish a state on that land. (Oth-
ers may, too — nationalism involves col-
lective consciousness, not exclusive land
claims.) Since 1948, Zionism has been the
movement to perfect that state.
Like all countries, Israel makes good
and bad moves. If you’re anti-Zionist, you
reject Israel’s very existence. If you’re criti- needed a state as a refuge, immediately,
cal of Israel sometimes, you’re a thinking
human being.
America’s president offers an opportu-
nity to understand that distinction. The 77
percent of American Jews who hate Don-
ald Trump still remain proudly Ameri-
can. Why can’t we love Israel and Zionism
regardless of particular prime ministers or
policies, too?
Here’s the real question for Jews: Do you
feel connected to Israel, today’s great Jew-
ish people project? If so, you stick with it
because you belong to the Jewish people.
And you help perfect that state through
Zionism — embracing different schools of
Zionist thought. It could be Religious Zion-
ism or left-leaning Labor Zionism or right-
leaning Revisionist Zionism or Cultural
Zionism.
In honor of Israel’s 70th birthday, I just
published “The Zionist Ideas,” updating

Zionist Idea.” Adding the “s” broadens the
conversation, from the 38 thinkers in his
book to the 170 in mine. As part of its pub-
lication and in honor of Yom Ha’Atzmaut,
Israel’s Independence Day, I am urging
readers to host Zionist salons, home-based
conversations addressing “what Zionism
and Israel mean to me today.”
Establishing Israel in 1948 fulfilled the
Zionist idea, the idea that powerless Jews
and as a platform to flourish and express
Jewish values, long-term. Seventy years
later, debating Zionist ideas welcomes
debate from left to right, religious and
nonreligious, about what Zionism and
Israel can mean to me as a Jew, as a person
— and how some of these ideas can help
Israel become a model democracy.
That’s why Zionism didn’t end in 1948.
The debates continue.
If Zionism as an idea asserts that Jews
are a people with a homeland, and Zion-
ism as a movement builds, protects, and
perfects the state, Zionism as a value is
more personal. Zionists see it as a way of
explaining Judaism as a culture, a civiliza-
tion, an ethnicity, and a tradition, not just
a religion. It anchors us in a self-indulgent,
throwaway society, providing a sense of
community in an often lonely, alienating
culture, and a sense of mission in an often
aimless world.
Reclaiming Zionism often
entails moving from Politi-
cal Zionism — asking what we
can do for our country — to
Identity Zionism — asking,
with apologies to JFK, what
your country can do for you.
There’s a reason why Israel
ranks 11th on the world “Hap-
piness Index,” despite the
nation’s many challenges.
Most Israelis are instinctively
Identity Zionists. Their iden-
tity blossoms from the Zion-
ist state — which appreciates
strong family values, robust
community ties, deep patri-
otic feelings — and a broader
sense of mission in life. That’s
part of the package Birthright
participants and other tour-
ists appreciate when visiting
Israel. And that’s the recipe
that makes so many Israelis
happy despite the rush-rush of
their society and the roar-roar
of some Palestinian neighbors
demanding their destruction.
Zionism isn’t the only way
or the best way, it’s just my
way, my people’s way. I’m
not smart enough to improvise another
framework.
Identity Zionism includes commitments
to Jewish education, Jewish action, to mak-
ing Jewish ethics come alive, to Jewish peo-
plehood and Jewish community. These are
core Zionist values that I, for one, would
— in Churchill’s words — never surrender.
Today, the #MeToo conversation spot-
lights how often victims — especially
women — internalize persecution, letting
bullies win. Anyone interested in abandon-
ing Zionism first should ask: How much
of this internalizes the delegitimization
campaign?
If we don’t stand up for ourselves, who
are we? If we let those haters win, what are
we? And if we don’t start celebrating and
reclaiming the Z-word now — at Israel’s

Crazy Israeli winemaking from Jezreel

razy. Jezreel Valley Winery’s
founders are crazy. Tech
titans such as Apple’s Steve
Jobs and Oracle’s Larry
Ellison use the word crazy to refer
to those whose thinking is outside of
the box, innovative and disruptive.
As Larry Ellison put it: “You’re not
going to succeed when everyone is
doing the same thing... accept differ-
ent thinking.”
Pesonally, Yehuda Nahar and Jacob
Ner-David, co-founders of Jezreel Valley
Winery, are anything but crazy. Yet this
five-year-old winery is leading a disrup-
tive wave and making wines that others,
both in and outside of Israel, might con-
sider crazy.
But crazy is not the goal of Jezreel.
Rather, original is — “original Israeli”
more specifically.
The three red grapes that Jezreel
has chosen to focus on are Syrah, Cari-
gnan and Argaman.
Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a
grape used to make world-class wines
in places such as Southern France’s
Rhone Valley as well as Australia. Jez-
reel believes this grape is ideally suited
to the Mediterranean climate of Israel
and when planted in the correct loca-
tion, harvested at the right time, and
then made into a wine that allows the
grape to express its true character, it
can be uniquely Israeli and a perfect
complement to Israel’s Middle Eastern
food and warm climate.
Carignan is a grape that, while
widely planted around the world,
has a reputation for being a stubborn
grape. It is late to ripen, susceptible to
rot, and its tough stalks make it chal-
lenging for machine harvesting. Cari-
gnan became a widely-planted grape
due to its ability to yield a very high
amount of grapes per vine. It is for this
reason that it was a variety planted in
Israel, specifically when Israel was
making kiddush wine and quality was
of secondary concern to quantity. It
took an innovative and stubborn win-
ery such as Jezreel to make a world
class wine out of Carignan and Jez-
reel is very proud of the fact that their
Carignan is the first Israeli and kosher
wine on the wine list at a three star
Michelin restaurant in France.
While Jezreel believes that their use
of Syrah and Carignan is distinctly
Israeli, they took this philosophy to
the next level with their use of indig-
enous grapes Argaman and Dabuki.
Argaman is a modern Israeli grape,
having been created from the cross
of two other grapes in Israel in the
1970s to provide color to Israeli red
blends. It quickly fell out of favor and
other grapes such as Petite Sirah were
instead used to provide the color to
blends. A few attempts to make quality
table wine from Argaman were made Jezreel Valley

the 70th Anniversary of the U.S. Warns Against Establishment
Establishment of the State of Israel of Jewish Government

1948, JtA) — On the eve of the open-
ing of the second special session of the
U.N. General Assembly to discuss the
future government of Palestine, the
United States today served notice that
should the U.N. Palestine Commission
proceed with its plans to set up a Pro-
visional Council of Government for the
Jewish State, it would be considered
a breach of the political and military
truce sought by the Security Council.
The warning was voiced by U.S.
delegate Warren R. Austin during a
Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey discussion at the Security Council at

was presented by President Alfonso
Lopez for a vote. The resolution was
strongly supported by Austin who
also pleaded with the Jews and the
Arabs for its acceptance.
The U.S. delegate warned the coun-
cil that time is short, that the British
administration alone exercises gov-
ernmental authority in Palestine until
May 15 and that no other authority can
lawfully bear arms there. Not even the
United Nations can send in an armed
force so long as the British Mandate is
in force, except at the invitation of the
Mandatory Power, he pointed out.
General A.G.L. McNaughton of Can-
ada also spoke in favor of the truce
resolution and appealed to the Jews
and Arabs to accept it. He emphasized
that the proposal “is the product of a
cooperative effort by several delega-
tions, whose main desire was to find
a fair and equitable basis on which
there might be an immediate cessa-
tion of acts of violence in Palestine,
without prejudice to the rights, claims
or positions of the parties concerned.”
Shertok says truce
proposal “loads the dice;”
outlines Jewish conditions
Moshe Shertok, speaking on behalf of
the Jewish Agency, pointed out that
the whole question of a truce in Pal-
estine had been raised in the Security
Council as part of a general proposal
to set aside the General Assembly’s
resolution on partition, and substitute
an entirely different plan which the
Agency found “utterly unacceptable.”
The very idea of a truce pro-
posal brought forward in this way
appeared to “load the dice” against
Jewish interest, he declared. In addi-
tion, the wording of the resolution

already adopted on the truce ignored
the main aspect of the Palestine prob-
lem–-”invasion by armed forces from
outside,” organized by the Arab states
and “tolerated” by the Mandatory
Power. They constituted a “perma-
nent act of aggression,” he said.
However, Shertok continued, the
Agency had declared itself willing to
enter into a truce arrangement, pro-
vided that the truce was an effective
one and not a mere cover for the prep-
aration of further aggression, and pro-
vided that observance of the truce did
not prejudge the main issue at stake
or impede Jewish immigration. He
emphasized that in the truce talks with
the president of the Security Council,
the Agency had made only two stipu-
lations, both of a military rather than a
political character. These stipulations
were that all foreign armed forces be
removed from Palestine and further
armed incursions prevented.

Jewish immigration,
Shertok stipulates
The truce plan, Shertok noted, called
on the Mandatory Power to maintain
law and order. Thus, it appeared that
the duration of the truce was limited to
the short period between now and May
15, when the Mandate was to be termi-
nated. His other comments would be
based on this assumption, he said.
Shertok suggested a change in
the preamble so that the Mandatory
Power, with its “recent record,” would
not be formally assured of full interna-
tional support for its acts. He thought
prohibition against the entrance of
persons “capable of bearing arms”
would affect Jewish immigration.
The Jews could not agree that Jewish
migrants, whatever their age group,
could be thus put on the same footing
with armed bands now being sent to
Palestine to break the law and disturb
the peace, he declared.
The ban on political activity is too
vague, Shertok continued. He sug-
gested that it be deleted from the
text, or the wording changed to “any
action which might prejudice the
rights or position of either commu-
nity under the Mandate and the parti-
tion resolution of the General Assem-
bly,” a resolution which he termed
still totally valid.”

British Launch Heavy Attack
on Jewish Force in Jaffa

British troops fortified with armored
vehicles, mortars and artillery were
attacking tonight Haganah and Irgun
positions in Jewish-occupied suburbs
of Jaffa in order to prevent the Jews
from seizing the rest of city.
Rocket-firing Spitfires of the Royal
Air Force were used for the first time
in Palestine in the British assault. The
aircraft struck at Irgun headquarters
at Yam, on the outskirts of Jaffa, from
which Jewish artillery has been hit-
ting the Arab seaport.
The British attack followed on the
heels of a warning delivered to Mayor
Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv that if the
Jewish forces continued their advance
into Jaffa, British troops would defend
the city. Even if the Jews succeed in
capturing Jaffa, the warning said, the
British will drive them out.
The British warning was issued as
the joint armed forces of Haganah
and the Irgun captured the Manshieh
quarter of Jaffa and were continu-
ing their assault on the Arab city. A
Haganah communique issued ear-
lier reported that Jewish forces have
occupied the suburbs of Jaffa and sur-
