The Change of a Student at the University of Maryland
By Chi Fung Chow November 11, 2017
“I love animals, and I was decided to become a veterinarian,” Rachel Pollitt said, who is a
junior public relations major at the University of Maryland.
Before Rachel was in her public relations track, she was decided to study biology as her
major. However, she realized that she was not good at science, then, she changed it to public
relations.
The reason that Rachel wanted to become a veterinarian is the environment where she
grows. Rachel has four cats and a dog in her house. For the reason that her parents love animals,
she enjoys living with her pets and takes care of them.
Because of the impact on the family, Rachel hoped she would find a dream job that is animal
related. In order to gain experience, she had worked in a pet store for two years during high school.
Pet stores are not only selling cats and dogs, sometimes they also sell reptiles. “I am not
afraid of any insects or reptiles, such as snakes,” Rachel said. Rachel thinks she can handle the job
very well. However, there is one type of animal that Rachel was struggling. “I don’t like scorpions, I
don’t know why, but I cannot deal with scorpions,” Rachel said.
Rachel has a great passion for taking care of animals, so she was interested to become a
veterinarian. When she was a freshman at the University of Maryland, she took science courses
during her first semester. After, she realized she was not good at science very soon, so she changed
her thought.
At the time, Rachel was not sure what major she should pick. After the consideration and
the suggestions from her family, she decided to become a public relations major because she enjoys
communication and making conversation with people. Especially her brother just got a journalism
degree, which gave her a great courage to make the decision.
Rachel said she is interested in crisis communication because she likes to deal with crises
and solves problems. Rachel also said she wants to work in a big company rather than a non-profit
firm.
As a student at the public relations major, Rachel is taking COMM331 in her current semester.
According to Rachel, she thinks COMM331 is a great class because the professor is knowledgeable.
Even though the material is hard, and she struggles with it, overall it is a good class.

Writing Fundamentals for the Public Relations Professional
Ken Giglio, a PR consultant, was giving a guest lecture at the University of Maryland.

Dec 1 – The fundamentals that journalists should know for public relations writings. It is important
to consider the components that can increase the quality of the stories or even can impact the
reputation of the business.

“There must be three necessary roles within a complete communication: sender, message, receiver,”
says Ken Giglio, PR consultant specialist. “No one will able to hear if you stand on a mountain.”

The guest lecture took place in room 3140, Martin Hall at the University of Maryland College Park.
It was held on Nov 17 during the news writing class from 11:00 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.

“There are six elements of editorial viability as a writing framework to pitch stories and make news,”
says Ken Giglio. “Of the six elements of editorial viability, statistics, profiles and timeliness are the
three most important.”

The six editorial viabilities are statistics, profile, timeliness, expertise, star power, compelling.
Among statistics support the newsworthiness for the story. Profile creates the focus and human
interest by introducing the individual of the story. Timeliness keeps the immediacy, so people don’t
lose interest in the story. Moreover, expertise, star power and compelling are the substitutes of the
three most important elements that also increase credibility, human interest and immediacy. On the
other hand, Giglio also mentions five things that journalists should do and should not do for PR
writing in terms of the credibility and reputation.

About Speaker: Ken Giglio, who has 20 years career experience in broadcasting but also a PR
consultant specializing in writing, editing and proofreading. He has 20 years’ experience in radio and
14 years’ experience as a PR consultant specializing.
