Name: Miss Abby Nickell Date: April 16-20

Subject: Math Topic: Compare length

Grade: Kindergarten Length of Lesson: 60 Minutes

The Big Idea: Students can compare length using a variety of objects.
Standard: Counting and Cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers
and Operations in Base Ten
Cluster: Know number names and count the sequence, count to tell the number of
objects
Objective:
M.K.14 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight and
describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

M.K.15 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see
which object has “more of” or “less of” the attribute, and describe the difference.

Specific Objective: Students will compare and describe measurable attributes of

objects with 85% accuracy.

Materials:
Base Ten Blocks Model shoe Number Cards Worksheet(s)
Direct Instruction:
Monday: Teacher will compare two shoes.
Teacher will explain measurable attributes of the shoes.
Tuesday: Teacher will compare the height of two students.
Teacher will model statements about objects in the room. (Ex. the yellow crayon is
longer than the blue crayon.)
Wednesday: Teacher will compare the size of objects on the board, and model
statements about their attributes.
Thursday: Teacher will display objects on the board and ask students questions about
them. (Ex. Which item is taller?)
Friday: Teacher will display an object, and then draw an object that’s bigger/smaller.

Guided Practice:
Monday: Students will identify measurable attributes of two different shoes.
Students will compare their pencil to the teachers pencil on Smartboard.
Students will complete worksheet page 157 with teacher guidance.
Tuesday: Students will complete worksheet page 158 with teacher guidance.
Students will compare the height of their pencil to the height of their partner’s pencil.
Wednesday: Students will make a cube train using their base ten blocks, and compare
to another students on smartboard.
Students will complete worksheet pages 159 with teacher guidance.
Thursday: Students will compare objects around the room
Students will complete worksheet pages 16-161 with teacher guidance
Friday: Students will complete worksheet page 162 with teacher guidance.
After completing the worksheet students will draw an object that’s bigger/smaller than
the one on their page.
Lesson Closure:
Monday: Teacher will show number cards (0-20) and students will identify the numbers.
(Carpet)
Tuesday: Teacher will display 3 problem solving opportunities. Teacher will read
problem (twice) and call on a student to solve.
Wednesday: Teacher will display 10 frame cards, and students will identify the
numbers shown. (Carpet)
Thursday: Teacher will show number cards (0-20) and students will identify the
numbers. (Carpet)
Friday: Students will play shape (silent) BINGO.

Differentiated Instruction:
Tier 1 Teacher will provide more direct comparison of objects using the vocabulary and
hand gestures. Teacher will guide students in sorting objects from shortest to tallest
using two objects.
Tier 2 Teacher will provide comparison of objects using hand gestures. Students will
sort objects from shortest to tallest using two objects, with teacher guidance.
Tier 3 Teacher will guide students to compare lengths of objects independently.
Students will sort objects from shortest to tallest using three objects.

Independent Practice: N/A

Assessment:
Formative:
Teacher will assess student understanding while completing activities on the
Smartboard and carpet. Teacher will observe understanding through participation and
completion of activities.
