Top Ten List from chapter 1

1. Concepts to explain why places are unique

There are two concepts which geographers used to explain why a place is unique. These are
Place and Region. A place can be defined as a particular point on earth with specific
characteristics. A region is with more than one different characteristics.
2. The purposes of maps
A map is a representative of earth or places that found on earth in the two-dimensional flat
paper. The uses of maps are as a reference of a tool and as a communications tool. The
references help us to get the way between two places and to minimize getting lost along the way.
The purpose of the communication maps is for depicting the distribution of physical features and
human actions.
3. Pinpointing location
Global Positioning System (GPS) is the best tool to find a particular position on earth.
Commonly, GPS is used for navigation. And also, it can be used to the precise location of a
vehicle.
4. Geotagging
The photos we take and locations we gather are stored in our devices through geotagging.
Geotagging is based on latitude and longitude coordinate, record the pieces of information.
5. The ways of Map scale representation
Map scale is the relationship between the scale of the map and the size of the earth. Map scale
presented in 3 ways. These are:-
❖ Ratio: The numerical ratio between the distance of the map and the Earth’s surface. The
distance of the map always should be 1 unit and both of them should have same units.
❖ Written: The sentence that describes the relationship between the Earth’s surface and the
distance on the map.
❖ Graphic: It consists a line bar to show the distance on Earth’s surface.
6. The types of distortion
The scientific method that transferring the three-dimensional Earth’s surface to
two-dimensional flat paper is called map projection. The four types of distortion can make a
problem on maps. These are:
1. The shape 2. The distance 3. The relative size 4. The direction
7. Longitude and Latitude
Place’s location can describe mathematically by using the latitude and longitude coordinates.
Longitude lines are imaginary lines that are drawn from north to west. They divide the east and
west portion. The largest and the middle longitude line is called Prime(Greenwich) Meridian.
Latitude lines are also an imaginary line that is drawn from east to west. They divide the north
and east portion. The largest line is called equator.

8. Place names
The naming place is the typical way to describe locations. You can call it toponym which is
the name of a particular place or area. Sometimes names can reflect cultures and the history of
places.
9. Distribution property
Geographers want to understand why people arrange like how as they are. The arrangement of
space known as Distribution. Density measures how many people live in a particular area. Space
refers the physical distance between two objects.
10. Relocation and Expansion diffusion
There are two main types of diffusion. These are relocation diffusion and expansion diffusion.
A relocation diffusion means spread of an idea through the physical movement of people from
one place to another. An expansion diffusion is the spread of features in an additive process from
one place to another.
