DIS/REASSEMBLY

PRECAUTIONS FOR DIS/REASSEMBLY

• Be sure to unplug the power cord of the copier before attempting to disassemble the con-
troller.
• Never attempt to connect or disconnect a cable or plug in or unplug a connector while the
controller is ON.
• If the controller is energized with its cover open, use care not to touch the board inside it.
• The basic rule is not to run the controller with any of its parts removed.
• A toothed washer is used with the screw that secures the ground wire to ensure positive
conduction. Do not forget to insert this washer at reassembly.
• To reassemble the controller, reverse the order of disassembly unless otherwise speci-
fied.

TROUBLESHOOTING
FrameMaker Ver.5.5(PC) Pi3500
99.06.03

1 INTRODUCTION

1-1. General Precautions

• When replacing a part or plugging or in unplugging a connector, always make sure that
the power cord of the copier has been unplugged.
• Never create a closed circuit across connector pins except those specified in the text and
on the printed circuit.
• When energizing the controller with its cover removed, use utmost care not to touch a
board or any other component inside it.
• The basic rule is not to run the controller with any of its parts removed.
• When the user is using a word processor or personal computer from the power outlet of
the same line, take necessary steps to prevent the circuit breaker from opening due to
overloads.
• Keep all disassembled parts in good order and keep tools under control so that none will
be lost or damaged.

1-2. Reading the Text

• If a component (except fuses) on a PWB or any other functional unit including the HDD is
defective, the text only instructs you to replace the whole PWB or functional unit and
does not give troubleshooting procedures applicable within the defective unit.
• All troubleshooting procedures contained herein assume that there are no breaks in the
harnesses and cords and all connectors are plugged into the right positions.
• For the removal procedures of covers and parts, see DIS/REASSEMBLY.
• The procedures preclude possible malfunctions due to noise and other network prob-
lems.

1-3. Network Problems

• Any problem that occurs in conjunction with the operation of the controller over a network
should be directed to the network administrator for check and repair. The servicemen
should never attempt to make network-related settings or repair network-related prob-
lems.
• The user should only ask for a check on network-related wiring from the network to the
controller and should never attempt to check it out him/herself.

2 ERRORS DURING INITIAL SEQUENCE

This section contains the remedial procedures for errors that can occur during the initial
sequence that follows a power-up sequence. The details of each error are indicated by the
LEDs (D4 to D7) on the Main Board. At this time, the printer controller is stopped.
(For more details, see “6-1. LED Operation at Start-up,” GENERAL, MECHANICAL/ELEC-
TRICAL.)

2-1. On-Board DRAM Test Results Error

The On-Board DRAM (8 MB) is faulty.
✽ LED Condition: ❍ -OFF, ● -ON, -Blinking
D4 D5 D6 D7 Action
● ● ● ● • Change the Main Board.

2-2. ROM Check Error and Monitor Program Loading Error

Loading is faulty with an error found in the ROM contents.
✽ LED Condition: ❍ -OFF, ● -ON, -Blinking
D4 D5 D6 D7 Action
❍ ● ● ● • Check the SIMM ROM socket.
• Change SIMM ROM.

2-3. Controller Program Loading Error

The DIP switch settings are made for the monitor program mode or there is an error in the
ROM contents.
✽ LED Condition: ❍ -OFF, ● -ON, -Blinking
D4 D5 D6 D7 Action
❍ ❍ ❍ • Check the DIP switch settings.
• Change SIMM ROM.

2-4. Controller Program Fault Detected

3 MALFUNCTION CODES
If the controller is in a state in which it can communicate with the copier as it detects an
error, it notifies the copier of a code corresponding to the error (1810 to 18FF).

3-1. Initialization Stage Notification (1810 to 1814)

The controller notifies the copier of the specific stage of the controller until it becomes
ready for operation after power-up.
Code Description
1810 Parallel interface being initialized
1811 NIC interface being initialized
1812 Controller’s internal circuitry being initialized
1813 Printer functions being started
1814 Salutation being started

3-2. Cautionary Notification (1820 to 1823)

The controller notifies the copier that some of the functions are currently disabled because
of a fault it has detected.
Code Description Action
1820 NVRAM error: Reset
There is a fault found in retention of the setting values stored in the
controller NVRAM.
1821 Parallel interface error: Reset
The parallel interface in the controller is faulty.
1822 NIC functional level error: Reset
The NIC interface that runs the network utility or salutation is faulty.

✽ The data in the ROM might have been nullified and it is likely that
the controller cannot recover.

3-4. Failure Notification (1880 to 18FF)

The controller notifies the copier that some of the functions are currently disabled because
of a fatal error it has detected. It requires a resetting procedure for recovery.

4 REMEDIAL PROCEDURES
• The basic repair procedure for the controller is to replace the defective PC board or other
unit with a new one.
• First, identify the faulty symptom and replace the defective part to restore the controller to
the normal operating condition.

7 FORMATTING THE HARD DISK

7-1. Formatting the Hard Disk (HDD)

(1) Ordinary Formatting
If the HDD is connected when the copier power is turned ON, the controller attempts to
load the file system.
• It performs formatting automatically if the HDD is yet to be formatted.
• It forcibly formats the HDD again if the previous formatting sequence has been abnor-
mally terminated (due to a power shutdown or program error).
• The controller loads the HDD if it has been formatted and the write complete flag is nor-
mal.

(2) Forced Formatting

Flipping DIP SW-1 on the Main Board to the ON position starts the formatting sequence,
forcibly formatting the HDD and EEPROM.

NOTES
• After the power has been turned ON, install the firmware without running a print cycle.

(1) Installing the Firmware

1. Check that the machine power is OFF.
2. Remove 14 screws and the cover. (see D: 1-2.)
3. If a Network Interface Card is mounted, remove the NIC cable that connects the Net-
work Interface Card to the printer controller board. (See D: 1-5.)
4. Check that key 1 of the DIP switch is in the OFF position. (See M: 7-1.)
5. Using the printer cable with a ferrite core, connect the printer controller to the computer.
6. Turn ON the machine power.
7. Turn ON the computer.
8. When the computer is started, insert the floppy disk into the computer.
9. Start the MS-DOS prompt and, using the copy command, install the firmware.

10. When the installation is completed, the controller is automatically restarted.

11. Make sure that the machine has completed its warm-up cycle and then check that the
D6 LED of the printer controller is blinking. Next, turn OFF the machine.
12. Flip key 1 of the DIP switch to the ON position.
13. Turn ON the machine.
14. Make sure that the machine has completed its warm-up cycle and then check that the
D6 LED of the printer controller is blinking. Next, turn OFF the machine.
15. Flip key 1 of the DIP switch to the OFF position.
16. If a Network Interface Card is mounted, connect the NIC cable that connects the Net-
work Interface Card to the printer controller board.
