LESSON PLAN NO.

OBJECTIVE : FAMILIARISATION OF DME , IDENTIFICATION OF COMPONENTS AND ITS LOCATION

DESCRIPTION : DISTANCE MEASURING EQUIPMENT ( DME ):

• DME Isan aircraft system that measures the slant range distance from the
aircraft to ground based station by using secondary surveillance radar ( SSR)
technique.
• DME USES : DME also used to –
✓ help fix an aircraft position
✓ Provide distance to waypoints
✓ To provide aircraft ground speed etc…..
• DME operates an L – Band of frequency around 1000 MHz.
➢ DME COMPONENTS : An aircraft DME system usually has the following component
parts
• DME TRANSMITTER/ RECEIVER
• DME INDICATOR OR EFIS DISPLAY
• DME CONTROLLER
• DME ANTENNA .
▪ DME TRANSMITTER/ RECEIVER : The transmitter and receiver are usually contained in
one LRU .
Transmitter portion has circuitry to generate and transmit a 'L' – Band carrier wave
signal.
Receiver portion has the electronics required to receive and decode the carrier wave
and pulse pair returned by the ground station.
➢ DME INDICATOR : There are many types of DME indicator some are stand alone
instrument while other are part of combined indicator.
Following figure shows the stand alone indicator and DME indicator as part of an HIS .
➢ DME CONTROLLER : DME ground station is collocated with VOR navigation beacon or
airport ILS and so an aircraft DME is typically shares the VOR/ ILS controller to provide
frequency and control section.
➢ DME ANTENNA : The aircraft antenna for DME system is an L – Band omnidirectional
type , mounted on the bottom of the aircraft
DME antenna is fitted in an area not masked or sheilded from ground station.
