or sexual abuse within the family. When these children experience family
problems, hunger, neglect and domestic violence, they escape from their homes
and live part-time, or even full-time on the streets. Some are simply abandoned.

Street Children in the Philippines

In the Philippines, there is a huge number of street children roaming the

streets. UNICEF, through its Child Protection Section, is working with government,
NGOs and communities to uphold the rights of these children and give them a new
lease on life.

Street children comprise about 1-3% of the children and youth population of
the major cities in the Philippines. Metro Manila and the National Capital Region
(NCR) have an estimated 30,000 children on the streets, while Nationwide, some
250,000 street children are believed to be plying the streets of major urban
centers. From available studies, most are boys aged 7 to 16 years. About 75% of

As we know, one of the most important crop in the Philippines are onions.
Pests are the major problem that can limits the production of onions.

Last month, onion farmers in the provinces of Nueva Ecija, suffer from the
armyworms that attacked their plantations. The worms, locally known as "harabas"
(spodoptera exigua) has destroyed for about two hundred millions of pesos worth
of onions, that the local government consider placing the province under a state of
calamity.

According to the entomologist, in every female harabas can produce 1000

eggs that 90% of it is possible to become worm. After a month of studies, scientist
discovered the virus called nucleopolyhedrovirus; an entomopathogenic that can
only attack insects. Because of their discovery, it can reduced the population of
destructive armyworms. That tactic is possible to be effective way for the farmers
to fight/kill those worms. We hope that these discovery can be easily achieve to
help the farmers rise again. With this, the productivity of onions can be higher and
its quality becomes better. Farmers should be aware that sustainability is an
important way to ensure the production of safe and pest-free.
