Edition XVIII April/May/June 2002

W elcome to the belated edition of the Solaris Sentinel! After last months double
edition, I can say this months will be a bit smaller (aww darn!) but I still hope to
inform and entertain. The big buzz words are Technical Read Out. Say them with me:
TECHNICAL…. READ….. OUT! Though as of this writing I don’t have mine yet, I can
say there are already a decent majority of satisfied customers that are giving great feed
back about the new book. Once I get mine I will probably put up my opinion (wait, that’s
all the Sentinel is anyway!) on the book to give you the reader more insight into the first
product from Fan Pro and our “first” taste of Classic Battle Tech. I’ve included a custom
design with matching miniature, another scenario from Pidge, next section of the Coyote
Cliff Hanger, an outspoken editorial, and few other things to keep it interesting! We are
gearing up for the summer and the next big thing from the Commando’s! The Martial
Olympiads!! Check out http://www.classicbattletech.com and Randall’s April Battle
Chat for more info. Stay tuned here as well as I try to cover at least one area of the
Martial Olympiads, Norman Oklahoma!!

Editorial and General Rant on Life

Well, the last month of March hasn’t been kind to me, I must admit. First off, got
bounced out the major I wanted (graphic design) after a joyous portfolio review. Oh
well, that’s not the point of this rant though I must be bitter from some of my most recent
escapades. I surf quite a few different BattleTech related forums and I most generally
enjoy every one of them I mange to make it to. But I’ve seen a disturbing trend recently
that I’m having a hard time finding facts or a base for the current argument that’s being
put forth. Basically the argument goes as follows: “*insert sites web forum here* is the
last bastion of free speech left on the Internet.” Now, can someone please elaborate? I
infer that this is the standard polispeek slam at Classic BattleTech’s web forum. Now,
since I am a moderator there, I must disagree. Our job on the form is to make sure the
place doesn’t blow up into a full scale flame war. Suddenly this is akin to Nazism or
Communism. What’s that? Hemmlier or Goring I am not. And despite some of the
opinions brought forward by a dedicated minority, Warner and Randall aren’t
reincarnations of Hitler. On Classic BattleTech you can put forth what ever opinon you
like, but if you are going to do it in a mad, uneducated rant, I can say you might have
some editing or warnings coming your way. It’s all in how you put your arguments
forward. Arguing that “Wiz Kids Sucks” isn’t going to get you anywhere. First of all,
the only people that have the possibility to effectively argue this point have signed a Non-
Disclosure Agreement that says they cannot discuss what they are doing with anyone
other than the ones that have signed the agreement and the management of the company.
Anyone else that tries to argue and has no actual working knowledge of the game is just
making a fool of themselves if you ask me. I’ve seen people assume they know how the
game will work based on the knowledge of other products the company produces and
how that system works. Those are interesting assumptions, but they are nothing more
than that: assumptions. When the new game, Mechwarrior: Dark Ages comes out and IF
it is just BattleTech stuffed on a Mage Knight base, then sure, I won’t mind you saying
so. If it isn’t, then there will be some reconciling. My main point is don’t worry about
Dark Age. Everyone is already up in arms over a single bad lower frontal shot that
doesn’t even portray the figure correctly. The pessimists need to either give the system a
chance OR wait till the system is out and there is sufficient feed back to make a true
judgment call. That’s how I am going to do it. Now, I’m waiting for the next round of
heckles labeling me a “Yes Man”, or someone who accepts face value what the company
says, no matter what. I’ll save that rant and argument for later as this edition is already
way behind. Remember this is opinion, and MY opinion at that! So take it or leave it.
At least listen to it, that’s all I ask.

Technical Read Out: 3067 is here and Wow!

I was privileged to get a new Technical Read Out recently so I decided to give it a run
down for you the readers. We’ll start out with the content. The first thing I know that
was complained about was just taking ‘mechs from the various Field Manuals and
stuffing them in the new book. Well, leave it to Randall and FanPro to surprise us! Each
of the Field Manual ‘Mechs gets a new alternate variant, whether Omni or standard
BattleMech. These variants general improve the ‘mech or give the Omni a new way to
hurt someone. Also, each ‘mech has some fluff that updates it slightly for the extended
time it’s been out. I was pleasantly surprised at this so it was something I felt important
to mention. The next agenda are the ‘mechs that were produced by Microsoft. These too
get more variants than just the one that was printed in Record Sheet: Upgrades. Fluff
gives them more life than the sentence they got for Mechwarrior 4 so that is another plus
with them. Then there is the Aerospace, DropShips, and Warships. Something that is
slightly different from some of the other Technical Read Outs recently, there are brand
new OmniFighters for the Inner Sphere and second line fighters for the Clans. Same with
new DropShips that give factions more teeth than they had at one time. The WarShips
were already published so there really isn’t much new there, except for updates in the
fluff text. The brand new vehicals are also worth looking at, as we have seen with the
previews on Classic BattleTech .com. Now one of the most controversial things of the
new product: the art. I for one really enjoy Plog’s second helping of Technical Read Out
illustrations and think he is a great artist in that reguard. Some of the Inner Sphere stuff
could use some work in the art deparment as a few of them did not live up the
expectations that I had for the design. I suggest that you pick up this book! Great new
Product for the new CBT!!

BattleMech Technical Readout

1 ER PPC
1 ECM Suite
Manufacturer: (Unknown)
Location: (Unknown)
Communications System: (Unknown)
Targeting & Tracking System: (Unknown)

Overview:

The work began on the Grasshopper IIc surprising late in the history of the
Clans. Clan Coyote opened one of it's assigned Brian Caches in 3061 and
discovered an assortment of designs left over from the Star League. Some, like
the venerable Highlander and Guillotine, were quickly sent to be upgraded with
Clan Technology. A few 'Mechs though had no upgrade plans. Twelve such
'Mechs were Grasshoppers, one of the old mobile star league heavy 'mechs that
was a great compliment to the Guillotine chassis. The Coyote technicians set to
work their magic that they have done so often to other older Star League
designs. They were ordered to keep the cost down and amplify the hitting power
of the 'mech while retaining the same maneuverability of the design. No
problem they said and started to work.

Capabilities:

The Grasshopper IIc adds endo steel to the chassis and adds on another
half ton of armor. The medium lasers were upgraded to Clan medium pulse
lasers and the large laser was taken out in favor of a Clan extended range PPC.
The rest of the weight was made up in double heat sinks and an advanced
targeting computer. The jets were replaced with better running Clan models and
then the most radical change was made. The LRM-5 was removed and
although try as they might, they could not fit an ATM launcher in the head. It
might have been able to place a small scale launcher in the torso, but one of the
astechs fitted the hard point on the head with a powerful ECM system. The fit
was perfect and the idea of an all energy based mech was appealing. As almost
an afterthought, a rear firing extended range medium laser was added to round
out the weapons complement.

Battle History:

The Grasshopper IIc has only participated in trials and war games between the
only Galaxy to field the design so far: the low Rho Galaxy. How they have
managed to secure a production run of the designs after the Coyote Khans
deemed it worthy enough to enter full production is still a source of speculation.
The rumor mill on Tamaron is that the Khans have entrusted the planets security
to Rho, they might as well outfit them with decent second line weapons. As
raids on Tameron are rare to none, almost no other Clan fields the Grasshopper
IIc. Only the Hells Horses, with there now Warden Views and the Diamond
Sharks have managed to gain any of the designs.

Variants:
The only variant of the Grasshopper IIc has been dubbed the supper 'hopper
by some of the warriors of Rho Galaxy. The engine is swapped out for an extra
light engine which increases the speed. The extended range medium laser is
removed from the rear right torso for another jet to get the maximum range. The
PPC had to be moved to the left torso to make room for the extra jet, but the
"Super 'Hopper" isn't affected much. This version is given to Star Commanders
who don't pilot Guillotine IIc's.

“Broadcast that to the fleet. I want them to know exactly what happened,”
ordered Galaxy Commander Natron Kozyrev.
“Aye sir,” the comm tech said.
“Well,” the aged Galaxy Commander said, turning to her Star Colonels, “here is
what happened after we pulled out. The Star Adders clamored for a chance to try and
absorb us as well, but that just did not happen. So, they attacked a few Clusters on a few
planets as they left and then attacked Tameron itself.” Several gasps were heard in the
room, mainly from the aids.
“There was an engagement, and the Adder ship Admiral William S. Preston was
destroyed utterly. They only managed to salvage the bridge of the ship. That is being
taken back to Tameron as a trophy I hear. Also, the Sixty-Ninth Dragoon Cluster was
totally destroyed as well, and another Cluster jumped out of the system before either our
warships or anti-ship missiles could reach it. We believe it was their Seventy-Third
Cavaliers. Two other Clusters from that Galaxy slipped in via a pirate point and managed
to get by the last trinary of aero fighters we had on Tameron. They landed and faced both
Alpha and Rho Galaxies. We have made ourselves very clear in the past that Tameron is
not to be messed with, but these Adder warriors seem to not believe us until it was too
late. Rho led the spear head that shattered the Adders, with its unorthodox tactics. The
Adders fought back hard, but when the Silver Keshik flanked them, the trap was sealed.
Only a star worth of Adder warriors were taken alive. The equipment was then made to
rebuild the losses that Rho and Alpha suffered, with preference going to Rho as a reward
for their valor, if a bit unorthodox. Already the Adder whelps are clamoring in the Grand
Council because of the excessive force that we used to defend Tameron with. The data
dump did not include any other information, but Khan Koga said that it is paramount that
we secure our objectives. I do not know what this might mean, but it is best that we
make haste and complete our mission.”
The grey haired Galaxy Commander might have been what freebirths would term
beautiful once, but command of Delta Galaxy had begun to show on her face in the form
of intense wrinkling and aging. Randall Tchernovkov was surprised that she had not
been taken out of the ranks yet, though he knew she was an able commander still at age
50. Randall guessed this was partially do to the new trends that were shaking the
Coyotes and making them razor sharp. A lot of units had already upped their
performance levels in exercises with the programs that Khan Koga had implemented in
3063 to toughen up the relatively soft Coyote Touman. So far, the results could be seen
in the recent withdraws, save for one of Rho’s doomed Clusters which had been hit by
one of the most anti-Coyote units the Cloud Cobras had. Oh well, he would let Koga
figure that one out. He had a mission to do here after all.
“Now, Star Colonel Tchernovkov, since you hatched this plan, could you please
present it?” Galaxy Commander Kozyrev said.
“Yes sir!”
Randall rose out of his chair and maneuvered over to the podium, laying out his
notes and grabbing hold of the control devise that controlled the holographic projector,
“Well, we are basically going to wrestle some worlds away from the Jade Falcons. That
is the main premise of the mission. You will note on the projector these two worlds.” As
he spoke, a map of the Inner Sphere appeared, and then zoomed in to the upper right
quarter of space, into the area of space just out side of the Lyran Alliance. From there,
two worlds turned bright green: Botany Bay and Last Chance. “There is only one under
strength cluster defending both of these worlds,” Randall went on, “The 9th PGC, which
fields five trinaries, is the split unit. All the Intel we were able to gather from Phelan
Ward’s Wolves indicates that they are actually five binaries of force, with a decent
percentage of them being captured Inner Sphere designs. They are listed as an average
force, but I think that we can brush them aside. The idea here though is that we will have
to lay down our honor for this battle to gain a foothold.” The gasps from the other Star
Colonels and their aids was almost deafening. At once the arguing and bickering
commenced, drowning out any attempt to continue explaining the mission. Randall
observed his bickering comrades and sighed.
“Silence!” Kozyrev yelled.
The commotion died down as suddenly as it had began. Randall resumed his
briefing,” Now, as I was saying, we must strike hard and wrestle away these two worlds
from the Falcons. Once this is done, Lambda Galaxy will quickly come into garrison the
planets while Delta launches another attack. For the first attack, my 34th and Star Colonel
Pillan Levine’s 67th Assault Cluster will hit Last Chance. The 9th Strike, 19th Battle, and
44th Reserve will hit the slightly larger force on Botany Bay. We will be taking the
Savage Coyote as our Warship support though we suspect that this Cluster will not have
their own cover. Guys, I think that this plan is our best chance of securing two staging
worlds and advancing our Touman into the Inner Sphere. Good luck Coyotes!”

Location: New Avalon (AC) / Talon (K)
Communications System: Achernar Electronics HICS-12
Targeting & Tracking System: Federated Hunter

==Overview:==
The Enforcer has long been the workhorse medium weight 'Mech for the
Federated Suns and, later, the Federated Commonwealth. Considered a Davion
design, the Enforcer is one of the most recognized 'Mechs in the AFFC.
Because of this, allied Federated Suns forces wanted to update the Enforcer III to
reflect new Davion technological updates. Designers turned to the NAIS to provide the
proper high tech capabilities and provide they did. Using one of the new Rotary
Autocannons, technicians upgraded the capabilities of the Enforcer and made it strikingly
Davion. The impact that the upgrade had on the civil war was evident and quite a few
made the decent to New Avalon, helping to over throw the tyrannical Katherine Steiner-
Davion.
==Capabilities:==
The 6D model of the Enforcer III replaces the foreign Ultra 10 autocannon
manufactured in the Free Worlds League with a new NAIS Rotary Autocannon. While
this might not seem to be much of a change at all, the addition of a homemade weapon
and the fact that it is one of the most cutting edge weapons on the battle field helped to
restore Davion pride. Also, the potential damage is also one-third higher than that of the
original autocannon. Another heat sink was installed to eliminate all traces of heat and
CASE was outfitted in the right torso to protect the pilot in the advent of an ammo
explosion. A slight amount of armor is added to the original model protecting the torso a
bit better. The pilots only complaints that surfaced was the fact that at times the Rotary
cannon lacked the punch of the Ultra, LB, and even the original autocannon that pilots
were used too.

==Deployment==
To date, many of the 6D upgrades of the Enforcer III appear in units that were loyal to
Victor in his drive to dispose of his sister. Prominent units such as the surviving Davion
Guards, Archers Avengers, surviving Crucis Lancers, and a few other cases where some
of the NAIS’s technology was granted to outstanding individuals are known to field this
version of the Enforcer. Of an interesting note, several Lyran and loyalist forces also
have a few of this upgrade due to some of the political maneuvering on Katherine’s part.
A few of the Donegal Guards and Avalon Hussars still field the unit and the cheap
upgrade is gaining popularity in the rebuilding of the shattered Federated Suns military as
well as some sales abroad to Lyran interests.

==Notable Personalities==
.Captain Robert Pigeon, Davion Heavy Guards
Robert piloted his ENF-6D up until his death on New Avalon. The young captain and his
Enforcer, the Street Sweeper, so named because of Roberts spraying of ammunition
during city engagements of the civil war, were a pinnacle part in the New Avalon
campaign and it was Robert that helped to spear head an assault on the 3rd Robinson
Rangers and other loyalist forces that had bogged down the assault. Later in the city
fighting that occurred, Robert and the Street Sweeper met their fate holding off a loyalist
Assault Lance that had pinned Roberts unit down. His sacrifice was not in vain and the
survivors of his company have since renamed their company Roberts Regulars.

Hauptmann Mark Connors, 5th Donegal Guards

Hauptmann Connors and his Enforcer, the General, have had an interesting time in the
civil war and now are having an even more interesting time as the 5th rebuilds. Mark
survived the defense of one of New Avalon’s moons as the 5th was swept from the moon
by the Davion Assault Guards. Mark was one of the surviving officers from the
campaign, then a Lieutenant, and engaged the Heavy Guards on New Avalon. The
General was noted to engage the Street Sweeper piloted by the now famous Robert
Pigeon, but the two’s combat was brief. Mark now climbs in rank as he helps rebuild the
5th. As one of the senior surviving officers in the 5th Donegal Guards, he has taken to
commanding the unit in the field, hence the name of The General for his ‘mech.

Well, that’s it for today folks. Sorry about the delay and lack of content. I’ve been busy
with painting and with life in general. Hopefully I can get on track here and get this thing
moving! If you have something you think would be good for the Sentinel, don’t hesitate
to send in stuff to me! I’m always looking for things to put in here besides my own
bumbling rants. Art and stories or even how too’s! So, till next time, keep your aim on
