f. Summary of “Embracing the Historical Legacy of Young, Gifted, and Black
Educators”: (on next page)
In this article, Gist draws attention to the young, gifted and Black educators. Gist begins
by giving background information (history) about some previous educators, including a
comparison of the number of school-aged children taught by Black teachers and White teachers.
Gist explains that historically, White teachers only reach a small amount of the population of
black children; however, a greater number of black children were taught by Black teachers who
lacked certain resources for their teaching. Gist refers to a few other scholars, such as Dr. Ronal
Butchart, to further prove this point. Gist then explains the importance of these young, gifted,
Black educators. She addresses the value of these Black educators not only by describing how
they affect the children’s learning, but also by describing that these educators often view their
work as a purpose significantly greater than even themselves. This article concludes with a
lesson plan formed from Gist’s research studies, that provides instruction for these teachers.
Gist’s research attempts to evaluate how faculty implement instruction to teachers of color, and
also how these teacher’s experience this instruction.

“…One study found that Black women educators are “Knowledge of the struggle for educational justice is
motivated to teach due to intergenerational critical, not just for Black students, but for students
encouragement from other Black women, they view from all racial/ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and class
teaching as community work, and they see it as backgrounds.” -Conra Gist
connected to a spiritual mission.” -Conra Gist

“Many historians have cited the aid of Northern societies and White
teachers through the Freedmen Schools as playing an influential role in
the expansion of the Black social movement for education, even though
they only reached a small percentage of the Black school-age
population.” -Conra Gist

f. Summary of “Redefining the Survival of the Fittest: Communication Disorders in
the 21st Century”: (on next page)
This article, written by Ruben, uncovers the economic effect of caring for people with
communication disorders. This article, written in 2000, predicts that these costs will only
continue to increase because the majority of our work field today is communication based. In the
past, the work field has been dependent on labor; however, data shows that the work field is
increasingly dependent on communication. People with communication disorders, including
hearing disorders, voice/speech disorders, and language disorders, cannot work as effectively in
these new work fields; therefore, increasing the unemployment rate of people with
communication disorders. Ruben provides significant data to prove his theory that people with
communication disorders will continue to hurt the United States’ economic output, unless some
intervention is provided.

“The disorders of communication heretofore have

least 92% (16.2 million) of which will be based on
communication skills.” -Robert J. Ruben

“Communication disorders-hearing and speech- are associated with an

unemployment rate of 41.9% compared with 29.5% for the same working-
age population without disability in the United States.” -Robert J. Ruben
