Lesson Planning Template

Your Name: Ginette Rector Grade Level: 3

Lesson Title: Counting by 9s(9’s time Length of Lesson: 60 minutes
table)
Subject: Math

Standards:

MAFS.3.OA.3.7
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication
and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end
of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
5c Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive
models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.

3d Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

2b Advocate for equitable access to educational technology, digital content and learning
opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students

7a Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning using
technology.

Objectives:

1. Watch and listen to the Counting By 9’s 90’s mashup and sing along
2. Demonstrate proficiency of the nine’s times table using three different methods
3. Drill and practice the learned skills in order to retain the information

Materials:

1. Computer
2. Pencil/pen
3. Paper
4. Counting by 9's Song
5. PowerPoint presentation
6. Crayons or markers
7. Hand-print worksheet
8. Timer
9. Grading checklist
Possible Questions:

1. How do you get to school? Do you walk, ride a bike, ride in a car, or ride in a bus?
2. Name something else that has many ways it can be done. Are any of them better than
others, why?

Beginning of the Lesson:

I will show a brief video of a popular song that has been remixed with words that explain and
will help memorize the 9’s times table. Then, I will pass out a paper to each student with the lyrics to
the song and we will listen to the song again, this time while the students sing along.

Middle of the Lesson:

I will open up the PowerPoint presentation and begin the lesson with the repeated addition
method. The students will demonstrate each problem on their own paper as I am teaching the method.
The students will be given three problems to work out on their own paper using the repeated addition
method. Students will be given seven minutes to complete the three problems. Next, I will show my
students the finger method for solving 9’s times tables. The students will again solve on their own paper
the example that I give after explaining it. The students will then solve three more problems, this time
using the finger method. The students will color in the appropriate finger on their handprint worksheet
and write their answer to display their understanding of the finger method. The students will be given
seven minutes to complete these three problems. Lastly, we will cover the grouping method. The
students will take notes on their papers on the method example that I am displaying. After, the
students will be given five minutes to solve the last two multiplication problems on their paper that
includes the previous six we covered, making a total of eight student-solved multiplication problems.

End of the Lesson:

To close the lesson, the students will turn in their papers with the problems that they solved
using the indicated methods in order to access their mastery of the skills. Each student will then
use the drill and practice game from the curriculum resource page for ten minutes so they can
further practice these skills.

Accommodation/Modification for ESOL:

For students that do not speak English, closed captioning on the video of the song will be
provided so the students can hear the correct pronunciation of the words. ELL students may
also be given a copy of the lyrics in their native language for them to better understand the
concepts covered in the song.

Accommodation/Modification for ASD/SLD:

Students with ADD may be permitted to stand in the back of the classroom during the lesson
and may be given an additional ten minutes at the end of the lesson to finish solving their
individual problems before turning their assignment in. Students will be given a tablet and
headphones to listen to the song again during their extra time.
