1.

Why do you choose that title/why do you want to conduct this study/ why
are you interested in conducting this study?

Among four language skills that should be mastered by the students, is

reading. Reading should be the first skill that should be learnt by the
students because reading is an active cognitive process of interaction with
printed and monitoring comprehension to establish meaning. People
usually read the text to find the message or information. Whether or not
they can understand about the text they read, it depends on their reading
comprehension ability. Additionally, Mohammadi, Heidary, and Niry
(2012) state that one factor that may influence students’ reading
comprehension is critical thinking.
Successful students are not defined as those who are able to memorize
facts and learn fixed routines and procedures, instead as those who are able
to think critically when they are in difficulties and about what they are
learning. Based on the fact that reading achievement of students in
Indonesia was on the lowest category and 26.3% of them was reading with
comprehension. Moreover, Sudarmi (2008 p. 20) found that 43,33% of
students in Palembang were on below average of critical thinking.
The study conducted by Hosseini (2012) shows that there was a
correlation between critical thinking ability, reading comprehension and
reading strategy.
Due to the importance and the problems that I already mentioned, so that
is why I am interested in conducting this study.

2. Why must be Critical Thinking & Reading Comprehension Achievement?

Critical thinking is one of the factor that influence reading comprehension.
And also previous studies already stated that there is a correlation between
critical thinking and reading comprehension achievement.

3. What is your independent and dependent?

My independent variable is critical thinking and my dependent variable is
reading comprehension achievement.

4. Why is your phenomenon about this title?

At English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang,
reading is one of the subjects that the students have to enroll. The total
credit points of Reading courses at the English Education Study Program,
PBI UIN Raden Fatah are 10 credit points. It shows that reading has a big
portion in students’ learning of English. As a matter of fact, the students
have to deal with reading not only in reading subjects, but they also do
reading to support their courses, too. Since all courses surely provide a
number of texts to read and understand, the students should have good
reading comprehension and critical thinking skill.
5. What are your research problem and how do you answer it?
My first problem of research, is there any significant correlation between
critical thinking and reading comprehension achievement, I will calculate
the score of critical thinking and reading comprehension achievement, and
put in the SPSS Version 20, by using pearson product momen to find out
the correlation. My second problem, is there....... if there is a correlation, I
will use Regression test to find the influence by seeing R square,

6. To whom this research will be benefecial?

This study is beneficial for other researcher, because it will be the basis for
their future research, for teachers/ lecturers, it will be stimulated in the
learning process. And the students, they will have the ability to monitor
their thinking while processing the reading text.

7. How do you conduct your preliminary study? When? Who is the

participants?
I conduct preliminary study by using informal interview with the EFL
Students of UIN RF, 25 students.

8. How is the result of your preliminary study?

it was found that some of them are not satisfied with their reading score.
Some students of English Education Study Program said that they have
difficulties in comprehending the longer text. The students are sometimes
lazy to think because they have to assessand judge the rationality of an
idea from the reading text given by the lecturer. In addition, sometimes
they got bored in doing this activity.

9. Tell me about your previous related study? Who are they and what are the
results?
The first study conducted by Forood and Farahani (2013) shows there is
a correlation between critical thinkers and factual reading
comprehension questions.
The second study conducted by Hosseini, Khodaei, Sarfallah and
Dolatabadi (2012) shows there is a correlation between critical
thinking ability and reading strategy.
10. Explain about criteria of testing hyphothesis? What does 5% means?
To test the hypothesis above, the researcher will use these criterions;
1. If p- value is higher than 0.05 (p > 0.05), the level of significance is 5%,
Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected.
2. If p- value is less than 0.05 (p < 0.05), the level of significance is 5%, Ho
is rejected and Ha is accepted.
5% MEANS that 95% of the hypotheses are correct, and the rest of 5% the
hypothesis of this research are wrong.

11. Explain about Ho and H1! (H0=Null hypothesis/ h1= Alternative

Hypothesis)

Ho: There is no correlation between the students’ critical thinking and their
reading comprehension.
H1: There is a correlation between the students’ critical thinking and their
reading comprehension.

Ho: There is no influence of students’ critical thinking and their reading

comprehension.
H1: There is an influence of students’ critical thinking and their reading
comprehension.

12. Explain about correlational research, explanatory and prediction?

Correlational research is is a statistical test to determine the tendency or
pattern for two (or more) variables or two sets of data to vary consistently.

13. What is your technique sampling, why do you choose that sample? What
are the considerations?
I will take the students who have already taken Reading courses
(Reading I, Reading II, Reading III, and Reading IV) as sample.
Nonetheless, the eight semester students have already finished the entire
lectures in the class and they are working with their Skripsi.
Consequently, it is quite difficult for the researcher to collect the data
from them. For this reason, only the sixth semester students will be
contemplated as the sample. As the result, there will be about 103
students. The distribution of the sample can be seen below. Therefore,
the students of the sixth semester will be taken as sample in this study.

14. How to collect the data?

By using two kinds of instrument, the first is CCTT and the second is RC
Test.
The first, to measure the critical thinking students, I will use a ready
made Cornell Critical Thinking Test (CCTT) developed by R. Ennis et
all in 2000 which consist of 44 items. The second, to measure the
reading comprehension acivement students, I will use Reading
Comprehension Test taken from Cliff’s TOEFL Preparation which
consists of 50 items in the term of multiple choice questions.
15. Tell me about your research procedure?
The first I analyze the instrument, CCTT and RC Test, then I will do pre-
requisite analysis, to know the data are normal or not and linear or not.

16. How to make your instrument valid and reliable?

Since the tests are ready made and taken from, and also they are adequate
to measure the variables, so there is no need to conduct the validity and
reliability test anymore.

17. How do you analyze the data?

After giving the critical thinking test, the writer will check and then score
the results manually to know students’ critical thinking level, and then the
result of critical thinking level will be analyzed by using percentage of
students’ choice.
For RC Test, The reading comprehension test consists of 50 items. The
highest score will be 100 so it means that the score of each item is 2. Then,
the raw score will be inverted to know the level of the students’ critical
thinking and reading comprehension.
To find out whether critical thinking of students, as whole, have any
correlation with students' reading comprehension achievement or not, the
researcher will apply Pearson- Product Moment Correlation Coefficient.
Still, by using the same statistical method, Pearson-Product Moment, the
correlation between each aspect of students' critical thinking, and their
reading comprehension achievement will be established. After that, if there
is found any correlation between the variables, the analysis can be
continued to see the influence of the variable. As there will be a
probability of correlation, the study will conduct Regression test in
relation to see the influence of students’ critical thinking as whole.

18. What are the functions of pre-requisite?

The function is to know whether the distribution of data are normal or not
and linear or not.

19. How to see your data is normal amd tell me the process?
The researcher will apply Kolmogorov-Smirnov test by using SPSS 20.
The data is distributed normally if the p-value is greater than 0.05 (p > 0.5)

20. When do you use Regression Analysis?

As there will be a probability of correlation, the study will conduct
Regression test in relation to see the influence from independent variable
toward dependent variable
