1.14 Recall
27
Screen Description This screen is used to help the user recall prior knowledge and link the
new knowledge. The prerequisite material is reviewed and is linked to

Audio Speech You will recall that in the last lesson, you learnt to find the hypotenuse.
This is the side that is opposite the right angle or the longest side. Once
you have identified the hypotenuse, let’s say that has the length C.
Let us learn what the Pythagorean Theorem tells us. We have said C is
equal to the length of the hypotenuse. Let’s call the next side (a leg) A
and the final side (another leg) B.

Navigation User can chose to go to previous slide, next slide, main menu or exit.
Screen Description This screen demonstrates the first example using Pythagorean
Theorem.
Audio Speech Let’s say we have a triangle that looks like this and we are told this is
the right. The length of one of the short sides is 3 and the length of the
other short side is 4. If we need to find the length of the missing side,
first you must make sure that you know what you are solving. The
missing side is opposite the right angle, and we know the side opposite
the right angle is called the hypotenuse. So we are solving the
hypotenuse. If we look at the Pythagorean Theorem, this is C. The
hypotenuse is the longest side and is called C. So now we are ready to
apply the Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem tell us that
4 squared (one of the shorter sides) plus 3 squared (the other shorter
side) is going to be equal to the hypotenuse squared – is going to be
equal to C squared. So now we just solve C. 4 squared is the same as 4
30
times 4. That is 16. 3 squared is the same as 3 times 3. That is 9. 16 plus
9 is going to be equal to C squared. Now what is 16 plus 9? It’s 25. So 25
is equal to C squared. We can then take the positive square root of both
side and you get 5 is equal to C. Or the length of the longest side is
equal to 5.

31
Example 2 (Slide Layer)
Screen Description This screen demonstrates the second example using Pythagorean
Theorem.
Audio Speech The Pythagorean Theorem can be used to figure out the missing third
side of any right angle triangle once you have the other two sides. It
does not matter what the third side is. So let’s say you are given a
triangle like this and this is our right angle. Let us also say that this side
over here has a length of 10 and this side over here has a length of 6
and we want to figure out this length right over there. So recall, the first
thing you want to do is to identify the hypotenuse and that is going to
be the side opposite the right angle. The longest side, the hypotenuse,
is right there.
32
A squared, which is 6 squared, plus the unknown B squared is equal to
the hypotenuse, C, squared or 10 squared. Now we can solve for B.
Notice the difference here. We are now solving for a shorter side and
not the hypotenuse. It the previous example we were trying to find C or
the hypotenuse.
So, let’s solve B. 6 squared is the same as 6 time 6 which is 36. Plus B
squared, is equal to 10 squared. And 10 squared is 10 times 10, which is
100. Now we can subtract 36 from both sides of the equation. On the
left hand side, 36 minus 36 is zero, leaving only B 2. And on the right
hand side 100 minus 36 is what. That is 64.
Now we take the positive square root of both sides. B is equal to the
square root of 64, which 8. So B = 8 and the length of our missing side is
8.
