Lesson Plan Title and Grade The Civil War


Level
Central Focus Students will analyze the impact of the Civil War on
Georgia.
Content Standard SS8H5 Analyze the impact of the Civil War on Georgia.

b. Explain Georgia’s role in the Civil War; include the


Union blockade of Georgia’s coast, the Emancipation
Proclamation, Chickamauga, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign,
Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Andersonville.
Student Learning Students will analyze the impact of the Civil War on
Goal(s)/Objectives Georgia by explaining Georgia’s role in the Civil War;
include the Union blockade of Georgia’s coast, the
Emancipation Proclamation, Chickamauga, Sherman’s
Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and
Andersonville through reading documents and discuss the
meaning and significance of these events with groups.

Prior Academic Knowledge Prior to this lesson students will need to know the key
and Conceptions issues that led up to the Civil War.

Common Errors, Students tend to get mixed up with what event/ document
Developmental means what. The teacher will give the students a graphic
Approximations, organizer for the students to use as they read through the
Misconceptions. Partial documents so the students can organize the information to
Understandings, or where they can understand it.

III. Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks


Launch The teacher will show a video about Georgia’s Role in the Civil
war.

How will you start the lesson to
engage and motivate students in
learning?
Instruction The teacher will write on the board: What does “emancipation”
mean? The teacher will give a sticky note and the students will
___15__Minutes write their answer on it. The students will place the sticky note
on the top corner of their desk or work space. The teacher will
use sticks to pull students names to share what they wrote. The
teacher then will talk about the meaning and how it pertains to
the Civil War.
Guided Practice The teacher will hand out several articles that the students will
read through during the class period. The teacher will read
__10__Minutes through the first article with the students and have a discussion.
Then the teacher will explain the directions for the remaining
articles.
Independent Practice Students will be broken in to groups by the teacher, and the
students are to read the articles and take notes in the graphic
__25___Minutes organizer that were given to them. Students will discuss with
the class what they found.

Closure The teacher will review important issues of the articles.
