Standard: 5.NBT.6 Divide a 3 digit whole number by a 2 digit whole number using strategies
based on place value, the properties of operation, or the relationship between multiplication and
division. Use equations and area models to explain strategies for dividing multi-digit whole
numbers.
Objective/Target
I can use a base lid area model to divide a whole number by a 2-digit whole
number.
- writes target on board while saying it aloud.
- activities at the centers revolve around this target
Generates interest
- giving students an opportunity to write story problems for their classmates, and
making it feel like a special task
- uses body language, facial expression, movement and energy appropriately
Procedures
- reminded students of behavior expectations for workshops, asked them for
ideas- then expanded on these
- sufficiently explained each activity/task
- stood at the area of the activity while explaining and used materials
- group members as well as associated tasks are displayed on front screen
- gives non-examples that prove useful but not overly authoritarian, to guide
student behavior choices
Question variety
- formulated questions in a range of difficulty and depth
- used these questions in the lesson
- used the exploration discovery method to guide students to the correct
conclusion. Often accomplished through the question, “what should we do”?
Classroom Management
- very skilled in this area
- fosters warm relationships with students, displays energy in her delivery and
offers consistent encouragement
- uses procedures that promote time on task, such as show me your pencil, your
workbook, giving specific and complete directions that minimize student
confusion
- organizes the room in a manner that promotes student independence
- makes sure that all students are heard and recognized.
Instructional Variety
-workshop method provides learning practice using visual, kinesthetic and social
skills, very important strategies to use with this age group.
