Effective Classroom Management Webinar

Presented by Jason E. Harlacher
Summarized by Brenda Juarez-Ramirez

*5 Key Research-Based Principles of Classroom Management
Structure and strategies used to teach productive and desired behaviors, while also preventing and
managing undesired behavior.

- Identify and teach expectations
- Reinforce expectations
- Manage misbehavior
- Actively engage students
- Establish procedures and structure
(there will be gaps if we only do some and not all of the key principles)

Comprehensive Approach

Example: seatbelt buzzer

Negative Reinforcement- making a behavior or action stop, the removal of something we do not like
Positive Reinforcement- making the student do a behavior, get something we want

*Why to focus on behaviors?
-because we are helping form productive citizens for this society and our classroom
(criminal offense, bullying, fights in school, etc.)

* Why teachers leave the profession?
-salary -lack of administrative support -student behaviors
(33% leave within the first 3 years and 50% within the first 5 years)

*School to Prison pipeline

*Zero- Tolerance
When schools suspend students:
-3 times more likely to drop-out -more likely to be suspended again
-failure to graduate on-time -lower academic achievement
-lower school climate ratings

*Proactive + Instructional With our Consequence.
-be proactive and instructional to teach students what they should be doing versus simply punishing
them.
(i.e.- reading and pronouncing words)

Framework to Intervene Behavior Problems
Prevent problem behaviors through avoiding the occurrence of it (antecedents and setting events)
Teach appropriate behavior
Reinforce appropriate behavior

2 Key Strategies
-Actively engage students
-opportunities to respond- anytime a student can respond to an academically- oriented
task/question/prompt (OTR)
-Reinforce Expectations
-Behavior-Specific- clear statements about student’s behavior that indicate what the student
is doing well

*Be Proactive!!!
*Direct relation between academic success and classroom management. *
