Celebrating Fifty-five Years of Ministry
1963 - 2018 In 1962 the Virginia Methodist Conference and the Charlottesville District Conference initiated a search to determine the potential for a Methodist Church on the northern outskirts of Charlottesville. A door-to-door survey, conducted by lay members of the local Methodist churches, revealed that 16% of the residents in the fast-growing Rio Road, Greenbrier and Route 29 North neighborhood were either Methodist-related, or interested in establishing a new Methodist Church. In October, 1962, the Virginia Conference appointed Rev. Claude Reed, Jr. to take the lead in chartering Aldersgate Methodist Church. During the formation and chartering of the church, Sunday services were held at Greenbrier Elementary School. On March 24, 1963, Dr. Owen Kelly, District Superintendent and Rev. Reed presided at the Chartering Service at which time 66 persons were received as Charter Members. Subsequently, a Quarterly Conference was called and a nine-member Building Committee was elected. The Building Committee located a 3.8 parcel of land on East Rio Road and funds for the purchase were provided by the Charlottesville District. Architects presented plans for a modest church building with ample room for growth. In December of 1963, ground was broken for a two-story brick building consisting of a sanctuary on the main level and multi-use rooms on the lower level. The first worship service was conducted in the new Church building on December 4, 1964. Building upon this foundation, Aldersgate is celebrating 55 years of ministry to the Charlottesville community. We have grown to become a vital community of faith with an inviting and supportive fellowship, and we look forward to a bright future of “making disciples of Jesus Christ.” For Our Youngest Friends Food Drive for the and Their Parents Emergency Food Network A professionally staffed nursery is available for children birth through age three during all services and Sunday School on the lower level.
