2 DISCUSSION
1. Discuss on the verification of equations (7) and (8).

Referring to the loading in Figure 5, the left-hand support reaction R1 is first required and the
reactions can be found from the equations of force and moment equilibrium.

R 1  R 2  wl  W (5)

R1 l  21 l   Wl  wl  21 l  21 l  (6)

Therefore

R1  2
3 wl W  (7)

Substitute (7) to (5).

R2  1
3 wl  5W  (8)

Example of verification of the equation (3) (Assume w = 15 N and W = 15 N)

2
𝑅1 = × (𝑤 × 𝑙 − 𝑊)
3
2
𝑅1 = × (15 × 0.0275 − 15)
3

𝑅1 = 9.725 𝑁

Example of verification of the equation (4)

1
𝑅2 = × (𝑤 × 𝑙 − 5 × 𝑊)
3
1
𝑅2 = × (15 × 0.0275 − 5 × 15)
3

𝑅2 = 24.86 𝑁

Substituting the values into the equation (1)

𝑅1 + 𝑅2 = 𝑊1 + 𝑊2

9.725 + 24.86 = 15 + 15

34.6 𝑁 ≈ 30𝑁
2. Calculate the theoretical values of R1 and R2, by using equations (7) and (8). Plot the graph
of theoretical values of R1 and R2. Compare and discuss the theoretical and experimental
graphs.

Table 1 Experiment 2 (Theory) show the value of R1 and R2 that have been calculated using
the formula.
