Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Multimedia tools can be a great resource for supporting the learning
experiences for all students. The use of technology in this lesson is designed to support engagement and
motivation for learning in the classroom. Specifically, English Language Learners (ELL’s) and students who
learn the best by visualizing will greatly benefit from this lesson plan. Creating a visual representation, the
“what” of learning in the classroom, is extremely important for students in the classroom that need extra
support. Expression, the “how” of learning, is also prevalent in this multimedia lesson. Students are given the
opportunity to learn through video, music, and multimedia presentations. All students in the classroom can
benefit from UDL principles shown in this lesson.

Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of shapes. Specifically,
the students will be learning about squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, etc. and how shapes can be two-
dimensional. Before showing the students the movie on shapes, I will conduct a short mini lesson as a whole
class. The students will be asked to raise their hand and tell me one shape they know. I will call on about 4-6
students to share a shape name they are familiar with. This will get the lesson started before jumping into
content and then the movie will be played for the students. This lesson plan will be briefly 20-30 minutes,
with a formative assessment at the end.

Since this is a kindergarten class, students will be given a formative assessment. After the mini discussion and
movie on two-dimensional shapes, I will hold up 5 shapes in front of the classroom and the students will be
asked to write down the correct shape name. By doing this, the students are not put under pressure, but I am
still able to see their progress and understandings. The students will be able to gain feedback on the shapes
they need to work on after the assessment has been graded.

MultiMedia Tools
Importance of technology: Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical to this project because it enhances
the learning of all students in the classroom. Without this technology, there are many students in the
classroom whose learning can be diminished. It is vital to incorporate technology into the classroom to meet
the needs of each individual student in the classroom. As an educator, I can say that there would be learning
lost without using this technology.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: When implementing technology and the Internet into the classroom,
there can definitely be issues that could arise. These issues can range from student personal information out
to the public to student access to inappropriate sites. However, it is the responsibility of the teacher to make
sure these issues do not occur. To minimize risks to students and myself, monitoring the activities students
are using online is important. Also, alleviating any fears by parents/administrators is vital to making sure the
parents know their students are safe on the Internet. This can be done effectively by keeping all student
personal information off the internet. This includes students photo, first and last name, address, email,
telephone, etc. All this information is personal and should be confidential to the student. Lastly, following
common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies can prevent any Internet issues. This includes refraining
from opening any attachments from unknown senders, making sure the student/teacher is present at the
workstation when logged in, and keeping passwords private.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I am very excited to see how my students react. I believe
this lesson can really help students gain a sense of visual learning. Not all students learn the same and it is
important to support learning in every way possible. Since this lesson plan is designed as an introductory
activity to all shapes and two-dimensional shapes, this could be extended to introduce three-dimensional
shapes. Once the students have grasped the idea of two-dimensional shapes, they are ready to learn more.
