The Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2010 is poised to be the largest multi-sport event
ever to be held in India. It is a matter of great honour and pride that Delhi has been
nominated as the host city. Starting from October 2010, history will be created as Delhi
will join an elite set of world
Cities that have hosted an international multi sport event of this scale. The Delhi
Commonwealth Games, to be held between 3rd and 14th October 2010 is a significant
step to change the past and encourage sports in the country. The Games will not only
encourage sports in the country, but they will also leave a legacy of new and upgraded
sports facilities, a pool of highly trained sports managers & technical officials as well as
building capacities to host other major world class sporting events.

The Commonwealth is an association of independent sovereign states spread over

every continent and ocean. From Africa to Asia, the Pacific shores to the
Caribbean, the Commonwealth’s 2 billion people make up 30% of the world’s
population and are of many faiths, races and traditions. The Commonwealth Games
Federation (CGF), the organization responsible for the Commonwealth Games, states in
its mission, that the Commonwealth Games is held to promote a unique, friendly world
class Games and to develop sport for the benefit of the people, the nations and the
territories of the Commonwealth and thereby strengthen Commonwealth. Held for the
first time in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada where 11 countries were present and 400 athletes
to took part in 6 sports and 59 events. Since the Hamilton Games, the Games have been
conducted every four years (except for 1942 and 1946 due to World War II) and the
event has seen many changes, not least in its name. From 1930 to 1950 the Games
were known as the British Empire Games, from 1954 until 1966 the British Empire and
Commonwealth Games and from 1970 to 1974 they took on the title of British
Commonwealth Games. It was the 1978 Games in Edmonton that saw this unique, world
class, multi-sports event change its name to the Commonwealth Games.

What is the Commonwealth

Games?
Previously referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’only single competition sports had been on
the program from 1930 up to and including the 1994 Games in Victoria. The 1998 Games
in Kuala Lumpur saw the introduction of team sports with nations taking part in cricket (50
over game), hockey (men and women), netball (women) and rugby 7's (men). In
Manchester in 2002 hockey, netball and rugby 7's graced the program again and at the
2006 Games in Melbourne basketball accompanied hockey, netball and rugby 7's on the
program. In Delhi in 2010 hockey, netball and rugby 7’s will again be feature. As the
popularity of the Commonwealth Games increased, in the year 2000 the CGF took on the
added responsibility of the Commonwealth Youth Games, open to athletes 18 years of
age and under. The Youth Games provide an excellent opportunity for aspiring young
athletes from the Commonwealth with a taste of what the Commonwealth Games has in
