QUESTION 1

Figure Q1 shows a frame, pinned at support at A and a roller supported at D. Member BC is

subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 25 kN/m. Flexural rigidities, El of each member
are shown as indicated.

a) Show that the frame is statically determinate.

(2 marks)

b) Using Unit Load Method determine the rotation at joint C in terms of El.
(8 marks)

c) Calculate the cross-sectional area, A of the member AB using Unit Load Method if joint
B is displaced horizontally by 0.0025 m to the right. Take Eto be 200 GPa.

QUESTION 2

Figure Q2 shows a pin jointed truss pinned at A and supported on roller at B. A horizontal
load of 150 kN is applied at C, a vertical load of 300 kN and an unknown force of P is applied
horizontally at D.

a) Determine the support reactions of the truss system in terms of P.

(3 marks)

b) Compute the internal force for member AB in terms of P.

(7 marks)

c) Using Castigliano's Second Theorem, determine the value of P if the horizontal

displacement at joint D is 0.0015 m in the direction of P. The cross-sectional area, A for
all member is 300 mm2 and modulus of elasticity, £ is 200 GPa.

QUESTION 3

A rigid jointed plane frame is shown in Figure Q3. Member BC is subjected to a uniformly
distributed load of magnitude 25 kN/m. There is an external applied moment of 150 kNm
acting counterclockwise at joint C. Take E = 200 GPa, / = 500 x 106 mm4. Using the
Slope-Deflection Method,

a) Obtain the Equilibrium Equations for the frame in terms of a

(8 marks)

b) If a = 2, find the rotation at B and C.

(5 marks)

c) From (b) calculate end moment values for all members of the frame. Then, draw the
shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD) for member BC only.

(13 marks)

d) Discuss the effect of moment and rotation when a is increased from 1 to 50.

QUESTION 4

A continuous beam ABCD with three spans is shown in Figure Q4. A uniformly distributed
load of magnitude 75 kN/m is acting on member BC and a point load of 250 kN is acting at
point E. By using the Moment-Distribution Method,

a) Compute the stiffness factor of the beam.

(3 marks)

b) Determine the member end moments for the beam.

(10 marks)

c) Determine the vertical forces at support A, B, C and D.

(7 marks)

d) If support C is temporarily settled by 25 mm, calculate the new value of end moments
for section BC of the beam. Take E = 70 GPa, / = 400 x 106 mm4.
