HALLOWE'EN.
Hallowe'en is the last night of October, and it used to be thought the most enchanted night of the
year. It was the night when witches and evil spirits came back on earth to cast their magic spells.
10Superstitious people kept up many strange old customs in an effort to keep these evil influences away.
Farmers used to light big fires in their fields, and the farm workers and their families would walk around
the fields singing old songs and hymns. At intervals, the strange procession would stop to hear the local
priest offer prayers to the good spirits, and ask them to help keep the evil ones away.
Great care was taken that none of the farm animals were left in the fields. They would all be
15locked up safely in their stables and sheds, and over each of the stable and shed doors a few rowan leaves
would be hung. Witches and evil spirits would not go anywhere near the rowan tree.
In more recent times, Hallowe'en has become a time for parties, when children dress up as
witches and play all kinds of special games such as "ducking for the apple". After the games there is
often a big supper with plenty of pumpkin pie, cakes and a lot of other delicious things to eat.
20 But for the most part the children enjoy the fun of dressing up and playing their favourite game
of "Trick or Treat". They run down each street knocking on the doors and crying loudly "Trick or
Treat !", and most people have some sweets ready to give them.
( Rowan: a type of small tree )

EXECUTIVE WOMEN
Never before has the corporate* ladder in the United States been so crowded with female
10executives climbing up to the highest rungs. At the same time, however, it is questionable whether
women's personal satisfaction has increased in accordance with their earning power and responsibilities.
Today, about 70 per cent of women have entered the salaried workforce, and the opportunities
available to them are much greater than fifteen years ago. For example, last year it was estimated that 40
per cent of all corporate managers in the U.S. were female, as compared to less than one-quarter in 1.978.
15Similarly, women now earn a third of all the Master of Business Administration ( MBA ) degrees
awarded** in the U.S. each year. Among these financially successful women is Ellen Marram, 48, a
Harvard MBA and the president of the grocery division at Nabisco ( a huge American company ). Despite
her generous salary, executive life is not easy for Marram. She typically works a 65-hour week, but she
says she has no time for, nor interest in, either children or cooking, preferring instead to eat take-away
20gourmet meals with her husband, a 58-year-old lawyer.
At least Marram expresses satisfaction with her work, but other executive women have dropped
out of the corporate race rather than make all the required personal sacrifices. Ardis Burst, another
Harvard MBA, is one example. She gave up her high-paying post at General Foods ( another huge
American company ) following the birth of her first child. "The only real reward is money, and perhaps
25later on, power, but the trade-off*** didn't seem worth it", she says.
* corporate: having to do with corporations, that is, large business companies, called corporations in US
** awarded: to award means "to give or grant by official decision"
*** trade-off: giving up something in exchange for something else

MOTHER.
“Ordinary” was the worst insult she could find for anything. I
remember her taking me shopping and the look of scorn with which she
would freeze the shop assistants when they suggested that some dress or
pair of shoes was “very popular - we’ve sold fifty already this week”.
5That was all she needed to hear.
“No”, she would say, “we’re not interested in that. Haven’t you
got something a little more unusual ?” And then the assistant would
bring out all the strange colours no one else would buy - stuff which
would have had to be sold off cheaply at sale-time at the end of the
10season but for my mother. And later she and I would argue fiercely
because I wanted to be ordinary as desperately as my mother wanted to be
unusual.
“I can’t stand that hair-do” ( she said when I went to the
hairdresser with my friend and came back with a pageboy haircut straight
15out of Seventeen magazine ), “it’s so terribly ordinary”. Not ugly, not
unsuitable. But ordinary ...
Her fear of ordinariness came out most strongly in her clothes.
“Couldn’t you please wear something else ?” I pleaded when she was
dressing for Parents’ Day in tight-fitting bullfighter’s pants and a
20bright pink sweater, with a Mexican cape
“ What’s wrong with what I’m wearing ?”
What wasn’t wrong with it !
“It’s just that I wish you’d wear something more plain”, I said
sheepishly, “something that people won’t stare at”.
25 She looked at me angrily and drew herself up to her full height of
five feet ten inches. “Are you ashamed of your mother ? Because if you
are, Isadora, I feel sorry for you. I really do”.
