the Girmitiyas.
Scholars take upon themselves the
task of scientifically investigating,
everything related to the indenture
system – an unscrupulous system,
vaguely understood as Girmit in Fiji
– and those who came under its grip
and became christened as Girmitiyas.

the home-grown thought-leaders,
who are descendants of Girmityas,

attempt to restore history
F iji Girmit Foundation of New
Zealand took upon itself the task
of ameliorating this above historical

The Indian Weekender is taking
upon itself the task of applauding the
Project Nasilai and paying a tribute to
the indomitable spirit of Girmitiyas,
as the 139th anniversary of Girmit
Remembrance Day fast approaches.
It is important to note that every
year, Fiji-Indians all around the
world mark May 14, the date when
the first ship bringing labourers from
India arrived in Fiji in 1879 as the
Girmit Day.
The Fiji Girmit Foundation of
NZ, formed in 2013, had organised
a pilgrimage to Nasilai village in
2015 to express collective gratitude
of the Fiji-Indian community for the
compassion shown by the villagers in
rescuing their forefathers.
The visit happened in October
2015 and had support of the Fiji
Foreign Affairs Ministry, Indian
High Commission to Fiji, New
Zealand High Commission to Fiji,
and the Kiwi-Indian MP Kanwaljit
Singh Bakshi.
Mr Bakshi had accompanied
the visiting delegation of Fiji
Girmit Foundation NZ which was
led by Acting President Sardar
Harnam Singh Golian, a former
parliamentarian of Fiji, along with
Viren Lal, Padmawati Charan and
Thakur Ranjit Singh.
In honouring the villagers,
the delegation had presented a
thanksgiving plaque, sevusevu, and
tabua to the villagers and chiefs of

vigour and joy by the Bengali community.
The festival is one of the biggest for the
Bengali community besides Durga Puja.
Probasee Bengali Association of New
Zealand under which approximately 100
Bengali families are registered hosted a fun
evening for its community members during
the weekend. Unlike other events, Poila
Boishak celebrations by Probasee Bengali
was more like an open stage which gave
its talented community members to come and
perform on the stage- impromptu.
The small community centre in East
Auckland was decorated in Bengali theme
with food stalls, imitation jewellery, artefacts,
paintings and traditional Bengali sarees for the
women.
While children played amongst themselves,
men and women danced and performed
traditional folk Bengali songs with a band of
musicians in the background. Such a vibrant
environment prompted other community
members to join the celebration and humm
along with the singers.
“We wanted to make our celebrations to be
less formal and more of a family gathering and
get together. This gives our small community
to mix and mingle with one another and makes
the ambience livelier,” President of Probasee
Bengali Association of New Zealand Jayanta
Bhaduri told The Indian Weekender.

Bengalis living in Auckland. The Durga Puja
celebrations are the biggest festival of the
Bengali community.The festivity that lasts
for at least ten days during the Diwali period
witnesses one of the biggest footfalls of the
Bengali community present in Auckland.
Representatives of the Probasee Bengali in
conversation with The Indian Weekender also
acknowledged its recent feat in cricket. The
Probasee Bengali cricket team earlier in March
won the Migrant Community Cricket Cup after
14-years of its participation in the tournament.
“I would like to acknowledge and
congratulate our cricket team for lifting the
championship trophy this year, after 14 years
of its last win. The boys did well and made our
Bengali community really proud,” Mr Bhaduri
said.

The Auckland Indian Association Inc. was
established in 1920 and opened its community
centre Gandhi Hall on the birth anniversary
of Mahatma Gandhi, October 2, 1955. As
the Indian community grew in number, the

1989 to build a multipurpose complex at 145
New North Road, known as Mahatma Gandhi
Centre today.

The event witnessed more than 200
devotees during the prayer service in
the evening and a small number in
the morning puja service.
Volunteers from the community
on such occasions come to the
temple to help organise the Puja,
bathe and decorate the idols with
fruits and vegetables.
The priests conduct a special
session of puja, havan (consecrated
fire) and abhishekam (bathing
deities) at the temple and the devotees
keep coming and participating at the
puja through the day.

then the Shivlingam and Nandi

dedicated most hours of their
morning on Saturday in preparing
the decorations for the evening
Puja. They made garlands and other
ornamental decorations with the
vegetables and fruits donated by the
community members which were
late placed on Maha Ganapathy idol
before the evening Puja.
The evening Puja witnessed
devotees clad in traditional clothing

garlands and floral ornaments which
were later distributed amongst the
devotees at the end of the Puja.
“Back in Fiji, we used to visit
the Thiru Subramaniyar temple,
and if anyone were unable to go
to the temple, they would conduct
the puja in the house, invite friends
and relatives and celebrate the New
Year at home. This has been our
way of celebrating Tamil New Year
for decades,” Mani, a devotee at
the Tamil New Year puja at Thiru
Subramaniyar told The Indian
Weekender.
Temple’s daily activities:
The temple is open every
day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in
the morning and from 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m. where two priests
conduct different pujas for the
devotees. The Abhishekam
and alangaram (decorating
of idols) are done every day,
and at least 15 havans are
performed every month.
On Saturdays, the temple
conducts Navagraha Havan,
and Abhishekam and devotees
make special donations
towards the temple.

in NZ curriculum?

he demand to include the Hindi
language in the New Zealand
school curriculum is not new and
has gained traction and wider recognition
within the community and beyond in
recent times.
There have been many schools,
trusts, organisations and activists in our
community committed to the cause and
leading the demand of including the Hindi
language in the NZ curriculum, along
with concertedly educating the younger
generations in the language.
Of many other milestones in the
promotion of Hindi language in New
Zealand, a very recent one was when
the last Prime Minister and National
Party Leader, Bill English, admitted to
The Indian Weekender in an interview
that he was not averse to include Hindi
among the list of priority languages made
available to students and schools in their
party’s recently announced pre-election
education policy as a part of second
language learning (Read full story in IWK
edition, September 1, Vol. 9 Issue 24)
Undoubtedly, those were some of the
most reassuring words that the community
has heard directly from the topmost level
in the government, even if just before
ensuing elections, and which continues to
delight many in the community.
However, it seems, very few in the
community have delved with the prospect,
even if a hypothetical one, of what if
the Hindi language gets included in NZ
curriculum tomorrow?

or beyond, say in academia, to step
up and provide the much-needed
capability of the Hindi language
teachers in New Zealand?

This is the question that two
Wellington-based educationists Dr
Pushpa Wood and Sunita Narayan have
been intrigued with and have taken the lead
to find a snapshot of the latent capabilities
lying within our community that could
possibly be ready or further developed if
the popular demand of including the Hindi
language in NZ curriculum is approved.
Dr Pushpa Wood, Director of Westpac
Massey Fin-Ed Centre had prepared a
survey that is not only peer-reviewed
and scientific in design but also has the
unwavering support of the office of the
High Commission of India.
Dr Wood is being assisted by Sunita
Narayan, Operations Manager at
Wellington Hindi School.
A press release from the office of
the High Commission earlier this year
(February 1) stated, “A nation-wide survey
is being launched using a questionnaire
developed by Dr Pushpa Wood, in
coordination with other leading experts to
determine competencies and capabilities.
“The High Commission requests the
member of the diaspora for whole hearted
participation.”
The survey had gone live earlier in
February and had gathered a snapshot
of available latent capabilities in Hindi
language teaching; however, more
participation is encouraged for a better
outcome.

consultation with other language experts
and the information gathered through
this survey will help us to develop a

Indian girl died in
a freak accident
in her own driveway in
Wainuiomata, a suburb of
Lower Hutt in Wellington
when she was assisting
her sister to jump-start
their car on Thursday,
April 12.
The girl was identified
as Harpreet Kaur, a
Harpreet Kaur
resident of Auckland, who
had gone to Wellington to
attend her sister’s graduation earlier in the week. Harpreet was
pursuing her higher studies at Massey University in Auckland
and worked part-time at a retail outlet in Manukau.
The incident happened in the daytime when the sisters were
trying to jump-start their car parked in their slanting driveway.
While trying to get the cars close to one another, one of the
vehicles started sliding backwards. Harpreet while trying to
stop the car moving downhill hit a hard surface and received
grievous injuries to her head.
Harpreet’s sister also received injuries to her body trying to
save her but is well now. Harpreet’s sister called emergency
services who pronounced her dead. The incident has been
referred to the coroner. The Punjabi community and the wider
Indian community in New Zealand are in shock with this
unfortunate tragic incident.
Harpreet’s cremation was performed on Monday, April 16,
in Wellington and a memorial and prayer service has been
organised on Wednesday, April 25, at a gurudwara in Wellington.
Harpreet was born in Argentina and moved to New Zealand
with her parents a few years ago.

Lord Buddha’s birthday Canterbury Nepalese Society celebrates

the arrival of Hindu New Year 2075
celebrated in Christchurch T he 300-member

idely known as Buddha
Jayanti or Buddha Purnima
in India, the festival – one
of the most sacred in Buddhism – falls
on May 22 this year and celebrates
the birth, along with commemorating
the enlightenment and death of Lord
Buddha
Co-organised by the Buddha’s Light
International Association (BLIA)
South Island NZ, and Fo Guang Shan
Buddhist Temple (FGSBT) South
Island, the residents of Christchurch
were introduced to the ideals of
Humanistic Buddhism at the Buddha’s
Birthday Multicultural Festival on
April 14.
Whether it was the Prayer of Many
Faiths – in which representatives
of Islam, Hinduism, Christianity
and Buddhism recited prayers in
praise of God almighty – or Wang
Zhijian, Consul-General of China in
Christchurch, praising BLIA’s efforts
in promoting the Chinese and Buddhist
culture; it was a day of celebrating a
life whose values and truths surpass
religion, race or political differences.
Notably, BLIA was founded in 1992
by Grand Master Hsing Yun, who
is also the founder of the Fo Guang
Shan International Buddhist Order.
Born in 1927 in Jiangsu in China, Yun
moved to Taiwan during the Cultural
Revolution where he started the Order,
which promotes Humanistic Buddhism
– whose ideals and main tenants were
introduced to Christchurch during the
weekend celebrations.
Apart from prayers, the celebrations
also included tea meditation,
multicultural performances, vegetarian
stalls, baby blessing ceremony, sutra
transcription, and bathing the Buddha
depiction.
Visitors were also treated to a wood-
firing ceramics exhibition displaying
the works of a self-taught Chinese
artist Huang Da An.
“If you look at our founder, Master
Hsing Yun’s teachings, you will find
that BLIA has always tried to build
bridges between humanity. Be content,
be compassionate and learn to let it
go. It is cultivating one’s compassion
through daily practice. When we
actualise altruism, joyfulness, and
universality, we are practising the
fundamental concepts of Humanistic
Buddhism,” noted Ven Abbess
Manshin, Abbess of Fo Guang Shan
NZ, addressing the gathering.
“This is exactly what Buddha
taught us. That’s why it doesn’t matter
whether you are from China, Taiwan,
Hong Kong or Macau. Buddhism is
always a common thread everyone
agrees on,” Mr Zhijian added.
Similar sentiments were expressed
by Duncan Webb, Labour MP from
Christchurch Central. “The spiritual
message of Buddhism is more relevant
to today’s chaotic world, than in any
other time in human history. I was
just given a badge stating ‘Say No
to Racism’, by the Human Rights
Commission representative here today.
This shows we have to be ever vigilant
to guard what makes New Zealand
such a great country.”
The ceremony ended with the
presentation of the world’s largest
encyclopedia of Buddhist arts –
compiled by BLIA – to the University
of Otago.
Significance of
bathing the Buddha
A
very important ritual during
Buddha Jayanti celebrations is
bathing the Buddha. BLIA explains
the significance behind the ritual as,
“Just like how water is soft in nature,
and can diffuse with anything and
everything it comes into contact with
– how wonderful it will be if we can
adopt the characteristics of water, and
present religion, culture and life as
an interconnected entity. Thus, the
significance of bathing the Buddha is
profound. As one bathes the Buddha,
the individual makes the following
wishes: 'As I bathe the Buddha, may
I be cleansed of greed, hatred and
ignorance, may I maintain a pure mind,
may society be purified of violence and
fraud, and may all be beautified by all
that is good'.”
Canterbury Nepalese
Society (CNS), which
was established in 2015,
celebrated the Hindu New
Year 2075 at the Shirley
Intermediate School in
Christchurch on April 14.
Notably, in Nepal, much like in
North India, the traditional lunar
Hindu calendar is followed, with
this year being the Hindu New
Year 2075 or Vikram Nav Varsh
Samvat 2075. This so because it
is believed that Vikram Era was
started by King Vikramaditya in
57 BCE as a commemoration of
his victory over the Shaks. That’s
how the Hindu calendar came to
be known as Vikram Samvant
after Vikramaditya. According to
the Hindu calendar, the New Year
is the first day after no moon in the
month of Chaitra, which this year
began on March 18.
Deepak Pandey, a member of
CNS who also emceed the event
informed, “We had an attendance
of over 300 people – from among
the Nepalese and Bhutanese
community of Christchurch -
with several cultural programmes
spread over three hours. The
highlight among these was the
dohori [traditional Nepalese song].

and Dr Surinder Tandon, President
of Christchurch Multicultural
Council, was also among the
guests.”
“One special guest of the
evening was Kali Prasad Bhandari
who is on a world tour promoting
peace, with New Zealand being
the 55th country he has visited. His
aim is to hoist the Nepalese flag in
Antartica. We had put a donation
box at the venue to raise funds for
his noble cause. The event ended
with a spread of mouth-watering
Nepalese cuisine.”
Sri Ganesha Temple
Christchurch also welcomes
the New Year. The organising
committee of the Sri Ganesha
Temple Christchurch (SGTC),
which held its inaugural pooja in
February this year, also celebrated
the Hindu New Year on April
14, at the Fendalton Community
Centre. The ceremony had
traditional New Year rituals,
followed by a vegetarian lunch.
The SGTC, which meets every
second Saturday of the month, for
pooja and social, aims to establish
a Ganesh temple in the Garden
City in the near future.

Indian techie duped of thousands by phone
scammer pretending to call from Consulate Office

Wellington-based Indian IT worker
was duped of $3910 on Tuesday, April
17, by a phone scammer pretending to
call from the office of the Consulate of India,
Auckland.
The caller made the victim transfer this
hefty amount to overseas receivers through
Western Union, apparently in lieu of favour of
“Consulate’s help in sorting his visa issues with
the Immigration New Zealand (INZ).”
The victim had first arrived New Zealand
about three years ago on a work visa and
is currently on Resident Visa working for a
Wellington-based Software company.
The scammer called him on Tuesday
afternoon, posing as an official from the Indian
Consulate office in Auckland. .
Speaking to the Indian Weekender, Hon.
Consul of India, Bhav Dhillon, said, “I am
sorry about this person’s predicament. But I can
confirm that it was not any of our offices asking
for that money.,”.
“Our office has been receiving multiple
calls from members of the public lately who
have reported missing calls and receiving
voice messages seeming to come from the
Consulate’s phone number.
“We have been advising members of the
public and the wider community through
numerous social media and media posts and
other networking groups within the broader
Indian community,” Mr Dhillon said.
The office of the Indian High Commission
in Wellington also expressed their frustration
about the incidence.
Speaking to The Indian Weekender, High
Commissioner of India, Sanjiv Kohli, said, “It
is frustrating that such incidences continue to
happen despite our repeated efforts to educate
members of the community that our offices do
not solicit for money over the phone.
During the call, which continued for about
two hours, the scammer was first able to gain
the confidence of the victim by revealing some
personal information and then began probing
enquiry into his current visa status, seemingly
feeding on an all-pervasive fear among some
sections of the community of cancellation of
visa or deportation.
Strikingly, the scammer had some accurate
information about the victim’s recent overseas
visit and entry back into New Zealand.
The scammer then told absolute lies saying
that the victim had provided some “wrong
information” on the immigration form which
has prompted INZ to cancel his visa and deport
him back to his country of origin – a situation
too compelling for the victim to ignore or
crosscheck.

ove is perhaps the greatest driving
force for all of us, with people seeking
both to love someone and to be loved.
The poets, song-writers, and film-makers
all make love a central theme that they write
about over and over again. People are drawn
to a good love story and an emotional love
song. But what is love?
A common definition is, “An intense feeling
of deep affection.” And one identifiable
symptom of love in this world is when we see
a person being more concerned for someone
else’s happiness other than their own.
There are those people who might put up
some form of hard exterior, pretending they
aren’t interested in love, but even they will
come to a point in their life where they desire
a genuine experience of love.
We can experience some level of love or
affection in this world, but the experience we
desire within our heart cannot be completely
fulfilled in this world, with other material
personalities.
The Bhagavad-gita says:
Being freed from attachment, from
fear and anger, being fully absorbed
in Me and taking refuge in Me, many
persons in the past became purified
by knowledge of Me and thus, they all
attained transcendental love for Me.
The normal progression of so-called love
is that it starts off with great excitement and
a fluttering heart, and then as it progresses,
people often begin wishing the relationship
was giving more.
They are not completely fulfilled in the
relationship, and yet still hold onto this ideal
of finding perfect love. This is because it is
part of our eternal spiritual nature to exist in
the condition of perfect spiritual love.
There are so many lonely people in the
world visiting dating websites and going to
bars--- people trying to meet each other. But
everybody brings some baggage, with their
own ideas of what it is that they want, or what
they expect of someone else.
I will often advise people of the need to
appreciate the reality that at some point in
their relationship or marriage, they’re going
to be dissatisfied with each other and that is
normal. Another person, another material
personality, another ordinary living being, is
not going to be able to provide the complete
fulfillment of this great spiritual need that you
have - to both love and to be loved. Placing
unrealistic and unachievable expectations on
each other is the worst thing that you can do
for a marriage or relationship.
It is perfectly acceptable and even healthy
to have relationships founded on a “less
than perfect” love.However, as eternal spirit
souls by nature, our real and eternal need
lies in re-establishing our connection (or--
the longing to re-connect) with the Supreme
Soul, the actual Lord of our heart. If we are
not able to fulfill this natural propensity to
love the true Lord of our heart, they we’ll
find ourselves looking everywhere else for
this connection. (or---constantly seeking
this connection elsewhere.) The word ‘yoga’

after things in this world thinking that we will
find some perfection here. We chase here, we
chase there, we try this, we try that, and we
always come up empty-handed.
The yoga process very much involves
learning to curb that tendency and redirecting
our search for happiness within.
The Bhagavad-gita says:

the condition of true spiritual love.
In this condition, not only will they love the
Supreme Soul but they will also experience
genuine love for all others, seeing them as His
children, His parts and parcels, and individual
living beings who are all intensely loved by
the Supreme Soul.
